Grief: Author looks at three different forms of loss.
Dr. Jones has counseled persons in the grieving process in her profession as a Christian counselor. Her discoveries of grief in her profession as well as her personal experience with three different aspects of loss will be helpful to any reader who is struggling through loss and grief. How Dr. Jones presents each form of grief with her own personal experiences will help the reader apply it to their own loss. Her sense of humor (the loss of a spouse is like, "amputation without anesthesia") helps to lighten a deep and emotional subject to us all. This is a "must read" resource book for anyone who is experiencing grief or who counsels others who are grieving.

Loved it, Loved it, Loved it.
It says something about a book that makes you want to read it till' you can't stay awake any more at night and when it's the first thing you think about when you wake up in the morning (to read more of it). "Blue Like Jazz," is such a book. I can't really compare it to any other book b/c I've never read anything quite like it. It's just a compilation of stories and thoughts told through the eyes of a truly honest and heartfelt man.

The thing that really hit me while reading the book was that of encouragement. Thank God there is at least several more people out there (Donald and many of his friends which I feel like I know and would love to hang out with) who are like me in their pursuit to be in love with Jesus. These past few months have been a shaping time for me and granted, I have my own stories to tell and maybe someday I can, but for now, I've never felt God speaking to me so often as I did while reading this book (besides when I read the Bible I suppose). But this time, the voice was so much more personal, more intimate, more real.

The hardest thing for me to think after reading this book was that not everybody gets it and not all Christians are there yet. Not to say that I am, but still, it's going to be tough to convey this message of Jesus' love to a world so enthralled in "economic love" (as Miller points out through a speaker he heard). My heart is stirring and I feel like I am just beginning to get this a little better now (Jesus' love).

Only one word can describe my experience in reading this book: Intoxicating. (and I've never even been drunk before:) Thank you, Don and please thank all your friends personally from me. My name's Neville. Like you said too, hope we can meet someday.

A fine book for any serious Christian
This is a great read for leaders or for any Christian who wants to know how God gives success to His children. The author covers a lot of ground in this book--prayer, faith, holiness, service, the Word, and more. Great insight into Spurgeon and the reasons for his success. Miller's writing is easy on the eyes. Highly recommended for any serious Christian reader.

The Role of Children's Literature in Christian Education
I first read this book in 1990 after it was assigned for a course on ministry with children I took in a graduate school for Christian Education. After 12 years I am still actively using it. The strength of the book is that it makes a convincing argument concerning the necessary of using children's literature in the Christian nurture of children. If you want children to learn to read and love the Bible, you need to use more than the Bible. This book convinced me of that. It demonstrates in practical ways how to use children's literature in connection with the Bible to give children a fuller understanding of the world God has made. Children's literature becomes a bridge linking the world of the Bible and the world of adults with the world of children. In addition to arguing its point and making excellent suggestions on how to use children's literature in the Christian education of children, the book also includes an annotated booklist of the best children's literature, the age groups for which it is written and a summary of the stories and themes you will find in each of the books. I highly recommend this book for parents, teachers, pastors and directors of Christian Education.

What Theology Should Be
Many accuse theology of being meaningless bickering over what we cannot verify. Von Balthasar happily topples those prejudices with this book, which is not only a profound look at the human condition and Scripture, but is also a strong challenge to the reader. The Christian and Anxiety starts with a chapter on what anxiety means in Scripture. This first Chapter alone would merit a purchase, as von Balthasar pulls together many threads from the Wisdom literature of the OT (e.g., Proverbs, Wisdom, Sirach, etc.) to give us a Scriptural review of anxiety. I found this very fruitful, and has caused me to go back to a couple books of the Bible for a new look. Von Balthasar then goes on in the next two chapters to reflect on the theological and philosophical underpinning of anxiety. This becomes tough, involved reading, and I'll be musing over this part of the book for some time, but you do come away with a new understanding about anxiety, which seems to be a very representative emotion for the modern West. Some books are difficult because the writing is poor, or the thoughts are disconnected, and some books are difficult because the author enters into a deep subject and does justice to it. The Christian and Anxiety fits in with the latter, and I highly recommend it as a worthy investment.

Great book for family reading at Christmas
I have used this book for two years during Advent to read aloud to my family as we finish dinner. My 12 year-old at first thought it was silly, but she is always captivated by the stories. I like the blend of fiction, nonfiction, sentimental, and compelling selections. We have learned about Christmas for some Civil War soldiers, read some old classics such as The Gift of the Magi, and discovered some new authors we like. I highly recommend the book as a way to combat the secular focus of Christmas, without being preachy.

Christs: Meditations on Archetypal Images in Christian Theology

For Christians with Polytheistic Souls !!
It is a pity that this quartet of David Miller's books: The New Polytheism, Christs, Three Faces of God and Hells and Holy Ghosts are out of print. They are simply brilliant examples of Archetypal Psychology's eye (that is, a polytheistic, mythopoeic, psyche-logical eye) turned on the beliefs of a montheistic faith. Not possible you think ? It is absolutely necessary I think, necessary to turn the two Doctors of the Soul (Jung and Hillman's) eyes on a faith whose soul has been long missing. For those Christians who have experienced the polytheism of their own soul and are seeking to integrate this experience into their faith these books are tailor made. I don't know of any other books that have attempted to do what David Miller has done. His accessible style in explaining complex notions is at least equal to that of Thomas Moore (of Care of the Soul fame).

Dignity and Dying: A Christian Appraisal

Not a Single Point of View
This book is unusual. Containing 17 essays by different authors, it is not focused entirely on the aspects of death and religion.
Instead it includes personal view points and experiences that provide multidimensional pictures of death, dying, faith, and humanity. This is not a technical manual or a religious manual. It is a very interesting helpful book that includes personal feelings and experiences to help clarify the topics presented.

Perhaps the Greatest Book on Personal Prayer out there
This is one of those rare gems that you find once in a great while. For the person who in serious about their personal prayer life this book is a must have. Father Bunge critiques the problems of modern Catholic prayer and lays out a plan for individual prayer and shows the basis on the early church fathers. This is an informative and practical book! I highly recommend it.
