The one-true Spider-Man Revealed
Howard Mackie, Tom DeFalco, Todd Dezago and JM DeMatteis finally bring the clone saga to a close with "Revelations". Heartbreak, action, adventure, and the return of a Spider-foe long thought dead all leads to an explosive climax, and when the smoke clears. Only one Spider-Man will walk away from it alive. Read and find out who it is.

This book was fantastic.
This book was wonderful to read. It finally ends the long and drug on clone saga between Ben Reilly and Peter Parker and once and for all the real Spider-man is decided. It's build up is amazing.

I hope we see this in the Spider-Man Movie.
In 1987, Stan Lee, David Michelinie, and a team of writers and artists finally did a series of stories where Peter Parker married Mary Jane Watson, both in the regular comic book series, the newspaper Spidey comic strip, and a live event at Shea Stadium with the New York Mets. featureing artwork by John Romita, this is a funny/romantic story and has been generally regarded as one of the most important Spider-Man stories ever published. I hope film maker Sam Raimi recreates this event on film with the Spider-Man movie or in one of the sequals.

The Biblical Doctrine of Man
Published in Paperback by Trinity Foundation (1992)
Authors: Gordon H. Clark and John W. Robbins
Amazon base price: $6.95
Used price: $3.99
Average review score:

Concise, but limited
Clark's tidy volume on the philosophy of man is great for those interested in one biblical option. Clark asserts that the image of God is what distinguishes man from the rest of creation and that said image consists in man's rationality. Beyond the obvious critique that the severely mentally retarded must have less of the image of God than must other, more intelligent persons and therefore must not be as worthwhile as other humans, Clark fails to account for, or even comment on the existence of, competing views, leaving the casual reader with a philosophical position that will make him wish to become a rigid ascetic, seeing as how his body does not carry the image of God and is therefore about as important as your average gnat. This, of course, also fails to allow for the legitimacy of the study of medicine, a development I certainly would prefer to avoid. On the plus side, Clark has a concise style that doesn't waste the readers' time, and he has wit and humor that keep even the driest of subjects from becoming monotonous.

A must read
Anyone who has ever read "Black Elk Speaks" should put this book "Black Elk and Flaming Rainbow" on their must read list. Written by a woman who was there during the interviews, this book sheds much light on the arguement of whether "Black Elk Speaks" is fiction or non-fiction. It also explains why "Black Elk Speaks" could not have been written exactly as Black Elk had told his story to Neihardt. The book also touches lightly on interviews leading to the writing of "When the Tree Flowered" also by John Neihardt, as well as "The Sacred Pipe" by Joseph Epes Brown. This book is a must read for anyone interested in Lakota culture.

Black Elk Speaks: Being the Life Story of a Holy Man of the Ogalala Sioux
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (1999)
Author: John Neihardt
Amazon base price: $21.85
Average review score:

Black Elk speaks and we're fortunate he did
When Neihardt approached the Sioux Medicine Man Black Elk in the 30's, it was just to get eyewitness details about the wars between Native Americans and U.S. settlers. Black Elk had a different idea - to tell Neihardt his life story - and fortunately Neihardt perceived the value of this unexpected offer. Black Elk not only talks about historical events from the perspective of one who was there, but from within a culture almost always discussed and depicted from the outside (whether sympathetically or not). Since this is a voice which so easily might have been lost to us, the fact that it wasn't is worth celebrating and certainly worth a receptive reading.

Really this is Black Elk's spiritual biography, and the story of his visions and his journey toward becoming a holy man in order to help his people is moving and fascinating, even if it's easy to get lost at times in the symbolism that, for him, is so obviously full of meaning.

It's important to remember that Black Elk's story went through several mediators - his son who translated the oral telling into English, the stenographer who took it down, and then Neihardt himself who edited it (it's hard to tell how much). Even so, this book would be very valuable to anyone particularly interested in the culture and history of Native Americans, in different approaches to spirituality, or simply in voices rarely heard.

Primitive and thought provoking.
I read this book a long time ago the key themes are still clear in my mind. I remember being struck by the brutality of it during the interactions between Dom and Va, two people from primitive tribes who each brought something to the relationship and ultimately the society they created.

An Eye for an Eye
Published in Hardcover by Chivers North Amer (1998)
Authors: Anthony Trollope and John Sutherland
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Quick, interesting read
Eye for an Eye has an immature young man making rather a mess of his first entree into adult opportunities. The book is a jaunty, interesting run to a conclusion--a reminder that immature behavior by a young adult can have unforeseen consequences. Many of the devices of Trollope's comic novels are here, but they subserve a plot which resolves in a decidedly non-comic fashion. A light read, an interesting commentary, and a social frankness that does not seem at all old fashioned. Trollope was not always an ardent critic of his own social order, but he understood the problems, as this book shows in a non-preachy way.

The Facts on File D-Day Atlas: The Definitive Account of the Allied Invasion of Normandy
Published in Paperback by Checkmark Books (1994)
Author: John Man
Amazon base price: $15.95
Average review score:

The D-Day Atlas
John Man's "Facts On File D-Day Atlas" is as proclaimed "the definitive account of the Allied invasion of Normandy". The author has brought together all the facts on units involved, dates, times, locations, etc. to provide a concise picture of Normandy just before the invasion, during the invasion (the first 24 hours), and the following operations leading to the liberation of Paris.

The maps showing the Allied advance across the Normandy beaches and Northern France are what make this book one of a kind.
