Excellent details, a lot of fun to read, lots of pictures.
This book not only provides the nitty gritty of keeping the porch on an old house from falling apart, it gives the history of porches, details about the lifestyles lived on porches in the 19th and 20th centuries, and lots of photos of porches. Look here for the historically appropriate railings for an early Victorian porch, or the furniture to put on your turn-of the century porch. Amusing stories of the famous, views of hotels noted for their porches; serving tea on the porch - this book isn't just a how-to, it's a why-was-it and why-keep-it that will add to your knowlege of the history of houses.

solid nonfiction with a powerful heart
It's rare to find a book that so clearly explores recent social history while moving the reader emotionally. *Race Mixing* discusses the legal, social, and cultural history of interracial marriage, explores ideas of marriage and family in both the black and white communities, and presents the testimony of interracial couples who faced racism and social sanction in addition to all the other pressures inherent in building a marriage. It's these stories, woven so well into the historical context, that give the book its heart. Read it now!

Raising Them Chaste: A Practical Strategy for Helping Your Teen Wait Till Marriage

Outstanding in Both Form and Substance
This book is an outstanding resource for parents, counselors, pastors, or anyone who works with parents and youth. I first read, "Raising them Chaste" seven years ago and it is an often used reference because it is outstanding in both form and substance.

Our world has reached a place where Abstinence has been redefined as anything but intercourse. Parents and teens aren't talking about the intricacies and intimacies of young life. This lack of communication leaves organizations like Planned Parenthood and Hollywood in the role of educator in the vital areas of relationships, marriage, sexuality, moral values, STD's, the role of spirituality and responsible behavior.

The Power of the Key Talk, which teaches young people about making a binding Covenant with God and their future spouse, can't be described. Showing the role of the ring as a symbol of that covenant during teenage years lays a wonderful foundation for the future. Most importantly, reconnecting the parents and children in one of the highest forms of "Quality time" imaginable will create a Kodak Moment in the heart of both parent and child.

The Durfields are a blessing to all who want to see a Godly perspective supported by academic wisdom and testimonials from teens themselves. You will be blessed for years to come by Raising Them Chaste.

Finding the Holy in the Everyday
This small book can be read in a sitting or used as a source of meditations for one's private spiritual discipline. It has warmth, humor, and depth.
Hermanson weaves a wonderful personal narrative of her discovery of eternal truths that can be found in everyday experience.
This book fits well within my understanding of Christian tradition.

A book of renewal
My husband of twenty-six years died in May, and I've been having a very difficult time adjusting. Though my kids tried to get me up and out of the house, nothing has really helped. I felt so alone and helpless without John. A friend gave me Mary Ellen Berry's book, and one day I picked it up. I left the house last week for the first time in months, and I've started picking up with my old friends again. Though I still grieve for John, I'm realizing that I can still have a life and it isn't betraying his memory to enjoy my remaining time. I recommend this book whole-heartedly.

REDRYAN takes off like a missile!
RED RYAN takes off like a ballistic missile. Within the first couple of chapters, Russia slips into a civil war and you're exposed to the life and motivations of a Hamas suicide bomber. You begin to understand the centuries of hatred that would allow a terrorist to consider using a nuclear weapon. The novel is fast paced, providing one plot twist after another until RED RYAN brings the world to the brink of nuclear war. I won't give away the ending, but you begin to wonder if the whole world is Y2K compliant and whether any of us will see the next millenium.

Sure and Strong
Ashley's THE REVISIONIST'S DREAM is a really great book - why haven't I heard of this author before? A friend recommended this book to me and I can't wait to read her other two books. These poems are informed by mythology and tale and are both truly revisionist poems and poems of a more contemporary nature that share images and ideas with the mythological ones. Ashley's writing is sure and strong. She has a great ear for lyricism and a remarkable sense of line. Not to mention an equally great sense of humor - some of these poems are really, really funny and still maintain their depth and resonance. Read "The Weaving: Her Voice (Another Poem About Penelope)" to see what I mean. This is humor with a point on it. These poems are both startling and riveting. Another interesting thing is that the book is cohesive, works as a book-as-a-whole. These poems couldn't have been thrown together randomly. There's obviously a great deal of thought behind the composition and compiling of this volume. I recommend THE REVISIONIST'S DREAM highly and will look eagerly for new work by this author.

School Days
I liked this story because it was happy and sad at times. The story was really detailed and I could make pictures in my head of what it would be like in the late 1800's. I learned a lot about Laura Ingalls Wilder. For instance, Mary was courageous even though she was disabled. I also learned that they moved from Minnisota to South Dakota. I hope you will read this interesting book too!
