The Trauma of Converso Women
This is an outstanding text. I have extensive experience working on Sephardic culture and the forced conversion of the Jews. In addition the author has been able to focus on one of the leading areas of Inquisitional studies that has gone unresearched for far too long and that is the treatment and experience of Jewish women forced to convert to Catholicism. This is a scholarly book that is a "must" have for anyone who is interested in medieval Spain, western history and nation-building because Spain was the first modern nation-state to come into existence in the West at the expense of minorities - the forced conversion and expulsion of Jews and Moriscos. The women of minority status were of the great risk and often the most abused. Levine Melammed has done a wonderful job in presenting this painful and traumatic experience. I recommend this text without any reservations.

good for ESL class
This book is good practice for the past tense.

The text is written in a metric pattern. The author suggests the melody of "The Wheels on Bus," but you can also use the melody of "Mary Had a Little Lamb."

What an Incredible Story!
The book opens with Lindsey Renee, the books main character and typical 13 year old, sitting in church daydreaming about the mall and new sweater she wants. Not really paying attention to the missionaries who have given their testimonies. At the end of the service, the pastor asks for donations for the missionaries. Lindsey is having a hard time parting with he $5.00 in her pocket because she would really like to use it to buy that new sweater. And if I tell you anymore of the book, I'll give away the best parts......let's just say Lindsey meets a very interesting new friend who steers her in the right direction. This is a wonderful story.....I can't wait to read it to my daughter!

Shopping Around
I had always thought of myself as Jewish, always celebrated the holidays with my parents at home. But then I was bat-mitzvah age and suddenly I didn't want to go to synagogue and memorize hebrew texts. I wanted to do something more meaningful to myself. And so we, as a family, shopped around. We spent hours at libraries and read countless books about Jewish heritage and the religion, finally stumbling upon Secular Humanistic Judaism. It fit us exactly. We think of Judaism as our heritage and religion, though in a modern scientific age we'd given up believing in the Bible literally. One line in the introduction of this book states something like, 'Our God does not care whether or not we eat tuna with mayo.' And we agree wholeheartedly. So if you're looking to understand these new movements of Judaism, beyond reformed, I recommed this book. It traces the history of the movement through powerful Jewish thinkers and writers of the centuries. I encourage you to explore, find what Judaism means to you, to shop around.

Another excellent Kaya story
This is another in the American Girls Short Stories series about Kaya'aton'my', a nine-year-old Native-American girl growing up among the Nez Perce people in 1764. In this book, when Kaya losses a footrace against a girl from another tribe, she becomes jealous; but things go from bad to worse when it turns out that this same girl has become friends with Kaya's sister, Speaking Rain. Eventually, though, Kaya realizes that her jealousy has gone too far, and when a crisis hits, Kaya learns that there is much to be gained by working together.

This is another excellent American Girl story. My twelve-year-old daughter is a great fan of Kaya, and I must admit that I like the stories as well. I like the lesson that Kaya learns in this story, plus I like the story and illustrations for themselves. This is a very good book, one that my daughter and I both highly recommend.

Another great story, with a great lesson
This is another in the American Girls Short Stories series about
Kirsten Larson, a nine-year-old girl from Sweden, whose family has
moved to frontier Minnesota of 1854. This book takes place during the
same timeframe as Changes for Kirsten, after the fire in their home,
and before the father returns from logging. When the two mothers and
Lars go into town to shop, Kirsten and her younger siblings and
cousins are left alone. Trouble comes in the form of a surprise
snowstorm that leaves the children snowbound. Now it is up to Kirsten
and her cousins to be responsible, and take care of themselves and the
baby.

This is another wonderful story, with a great lesson in
responsibility. As always, the illustrations are excellent and a real
addition to the story. The final chapter includes a group of newspaper
snowstorm stories from a 1888 newspaper, and then a number of ideas on
what to do during a snow day.

For those parents interested in reading
historical fiction about Swedish immigrants, please consider reading
The Emigrants series by Vilhelm Moberg.

A reader's rave review for Knights of Evermore
Knights of Evermore is a fantastic book! It's exciting, entertaining, and thought-provoking. Tells the story of Gulliver Lamm, a soldier in service of the High King of Evermore, and details his adventures as he rises to the rank of knight. Full of relevent analogies and parallels to the Christian life, you can't help but learn something when you read the Knights of Evermore. Great for family devotions! Five stars!

One of the best books I've ever read.
I have a reading disability,so it was hard for me to really get "into" a book.Well, not after my mother loaned me a copy of this book,I started reading and couldn't put it down. As a-matter-of-fact,I read it four time before loaning it to a friend who will not return it. So now, I am trying to find my mother a copy, as well as myself one.
