One of the best books about Cosmic Rays Astrophysics
The two volumes of "High Energy Astrophysics" by M.S. Longair are amongst my favourite books: I read them several times and every time I found interesting hints for my work. I'm waiting for the third volume for 3 years, but it's still missing from the bookshelf...
The first volume ("Particles, Photons and Their Detection") focuses on the interactions between high energy particles and matter, in order to help the reader to understand how detectors work. The theoretical approach is deep enough not to hide the "dirty" steps of the calculations, and some subsection requires good mathematical skills (well, not as much as for Russian books ;-).
The second volume ("Stars, the Galaxy and Interstellar Medium") focuses on the Physics of cosmic rays (CR) while they run through the Galaxy. The author takes the occasion to explain several very exciting items, from the proposed mechanisms of CR acceleration and high energy photons emission, to the diffusion through the interstellar medium and the Solar wind, untill the CR reach the Earth. Special emphasis is given to open problems -- only very few of them were solved in the meantime (Nov. 2001).
The 2 volumes are well suited for advanced students in Physics or Astronomy, and are a good reference for researchers.

How to Win in the Yellow Pages

Im A Yellow Pages Account Executive in The UK...
A customer of mine said this to me the other day...

Whats the difference between Yellow Pages and an Iranian terroist?

You can negotiate with an Iranian terroist.

It's great that you would like to know more about how to make our products work for you because we are as passionate about YP as this author obviously is.

It's an accolade to the undeniable success of Yellow Pages that a book like this has been written so if it helps you guys get the most from us; then all the better.

I would say buy this book but also listen to what your rep has to say...we may not all be marketing experts but we do know the book cover to cover and inside out. We know what makes a bad advert and what makes a good one. We understand what buttons to press for the users of the product and we honestly do try to make you guys as much money as possible no matter how small your investment.

Bear in mind though that a wonderbra does nothing for a flat chest...we try to move your advertising programme forward for that very reason. The title of this book may mislead you into thinking that you can still have a tiny advert in one classification in one area of your country when in reality, you really may need to cover a wider area and appear in all the classifications that are relevent to your business. If no-one sees your advert then it makes no difference how good the information is contained there because you have just lost an enquiry.

I suggest that you closely monitor the response of your advert with YP, ask your rep to carefully go through all the demographics and take the time to listen what s/he has to say. Then make a decision based on fact.

For those companies who only spend a few hundred dollars but expect to make a million ask yourself why you are surprised when it doesn't happen.

I hope this book gives your business the edge that you're looking for with your Yellow Pages advertising but bear in mind that cost wil always be inextricably linked to reward.

A fuller understanding of the tremendous war effort
The Human Tradition In The World War II Era is an informative collection of brief biographical sketches presenting the American experience during the second world war by examining the conflict through the ordeals of a broad array of men and women. Here are the stories of soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines who served in the European and pacific theaters. The Human Tradition In The World War II Era is divided into three major sections: The Home Front; The Government; and The Sharp End. Readers will appreciate a fuller understanding of the tremendous war effort mounted by the Americas, and gain a deeper sense of the war's profound impact on American society at large, and the lives of individuals both in the field and at home. This is very highly recommended, compelling, instructive reading for students of 20th century American history, culture, and participation in World War II.

I knew Hardee personally and am referred to in this work... it was great to re-live the spirit of South London in the 1950s and beyond and to see how a "bad boy" ended-up making good. A great read, with lots of amusing anecdotes...

Soul restoring reading for any stressed out parent
In I'm Counting To 10...: Hope And Humor For Frazzled Parents, Jahnna Beecham and Malcolm Hillgartner effectively collaborate to present forty-five stories chronicling a year in the life of a slightly eccentric couple and their two children. Told in the voice of Jahnna, the mom, the stories ring as true as they are laced throughout with recognizable humor. I'm Counting To 10... is very highly recommended reading and soul restoring reading for any stressed out parent who has ever had their kid erupt with embarrassing behavior in church, at a restaurant, on a plane, in front of grandparents, friends, or strangers passing by.
