The bible of pregnancy.
This is a sober and informative work on pregnancy and childbirth. My wife rates it as the bible of pregnancy, because no matter what symptom she had it appeared in the book and gave her a clear and rational explanation of what was going on. On first glance this book probably loses out to competing publications which have lots of colour pictures and small amounts of text. But that's a bit like getting lots and lots of salad but finding that there's no main course.

If you are college educated, or if you can read competently, and if you demand real answers from you doctor, you will like this book. If on the other hand you do not really want to be given the gruesome details, if you are a hypochondriac who will imagine every symptom described or if you cannot follow my review because you think the sentences are too long and complicated, then this is not the book for you. Buy one with pretty pictures instead.

Excellent...
When buying "Pregnancy" don't expect a book full of 'colourful pictures'.

It is an excellent source of information for most of the questions you might have about pregnancy - what changes are happening to you and your body, and what is going on inside you during the nine months -including detailed information on any complaints or complications you might have.

It also gives detailed information about the different kinds of delivery and all the possible stages of labour, which I kept referring to especially as the delivery date grew closer!

I found it very informative and well written. I had a lot of questions about 'what was happening' since it was my first pregnancy and I got almost all of my answers from this book rather than any of the gynocologists I went to! It's a must as a reference book.

I love this book
Hilarious! One of my favorite Durrell books.

WHY, WHY, WHY don't they re-print these books?

exquisite character development within an outrageous plot
I laughed so hard at the vivid descriptions that I had tears coming out of my eyes. All of the characters, their names, their qualities, what they said made perfect the hilarity of this wonderful story and all its eccentric charm. A tragedy it's out of print.

Wonderful sampler of samplers. Excellent photos, good writeups.

Samplers Through the Centuries
This book was produced to accompany the special exhibit of samplers at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in the spring of 2000 and contains photographs of the samplers in the exhibition. Beginning with a brief history of samplers and with a sampler for every letter of the alphabet, it includes such treasures as a sampler fragment (1300) excavated in Egypt, a band sampler from Britain (mid 1600s), a Dutch darning sampler (1813), American pictorial samplers, exquisite Ayrshire work from Scotland and a splendid embroidered Mexican landscape sampler (see cover of book). For those who were unable to visit the exhibit, it is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a variety of samplers, from many countries, exquisitely stitched over a period of 500 years.

Totally Awesome!! Wonderful for Classroom Reading!
I have read this book for the past serveral years to my students. It keeps them on the edge of their seats waiting for more to come. Sometimes I will stop in the middle of the book and reshelve the book. This usually has them standing in line waiting to check it out to read the rest. The possibilities are endless as to what you can do with this book for your cross curriculum teaching.!

This is a great book for anyone looking for some chills...
When I first read this book, I couldn't put it down...I wanted to know what was going to happen to Chase, Kelly, and Matt, and the story, though at first glance seems juvenille and uninspired, is actually engrossing. Scared Stiff made me want to read other books by this exciting husband & wife duo!

Stone Work
No building material is as hallowed as stone and few have been so misused in contemporary architecture-as a paper-thin veneer over a steel or concrete frame. The architecture of Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates demonstrates that stone can be used inventively and convincingly in buildings that address present needs and budgets. Holzman's anthology of his firm's buildings is astonishingly varied and shows how they were inspired by the past and by the material as it is cut from the quarry.

A FINE ADDITION TO THE ANNALS OF DESIGN
Emerson wrote, "He builded better than he knew - The conscious stone to beauty grew." Of course, the poet was referring to the architect of St. Peter's in Rome but the idea of growing beauty out of stone also applies to the awe inspiring work created by American architect Malcolm Holzman. It is this work and his dedication to the use of stone that is the focus of "Stonework," a meritorious addition to the annals of design.

A vocal and convincing proponent of stone as a versatile building material, Mr. Holzman shares his three decades of experience as a practicing architect responsible for such admired structures as the Louis Stokes Wing of the Cleveland Public Library, the West wing of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Highland House in Madison, Wisconsin, and many more.

His Texas credits are numerous, including the Murchison Center for the Performing Arts at the University of North Texas, the San Angelo Museum of Fine Art, and a master plan for the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth. In addition, Mr. Holzman currently has four Texas projects in various stages of completion.

With a storyteller's grace the author relates how stone is as important today as it was in centuries past, a thread if you will, that flows throughout all of civilization.

"Stone work" holds 220 stunning color illustrations that serve to underscore Mr. Holzman's advocacy of the use of stone as both aesthetically pleasing, environmentally appropriate, and economically sound.

A wonderful biography
I enjoyed this book very much. A must for anyone interested in Tchaikovsky's life, yet seen through the eyes of people who were close to him. Highly Recommended!

The best kind of biography. A scholar's delight.
This is a marvelous book about Tchaikovsky compiled of diary entries from his contemporaries with commentaries and analysis by Alexander Poznansky. It is the best kind of biography that makes him seem very real, coming to life off the page. It begins in his school years and continues with a variety of rare diaries and letters of people who came in contact with him and kept journals or notes. It covers the entire social range from princes to valets, so we get quite a variety of observations from the intellectual esoteric to the very "earthy." We see not only Tchaikovsky the great composer, but also the student, the philosopher, the scholar, the workman, the card player, the bon vivant, the unsuitable suitor. It also includes explanations and diaries of his ill-fated marriage and many details of his rich personal life. The conflicts and turning points of Tchaikovsky's career and life are well illustrated. Each chapter is chronologically organized with often the inclusion of several diarists, most of whom are included in the copious illustrations. Poznansky begins each chapter with a biographical essay describing the importance of the contributor and the events of Tchaikovsky's life. The comprehensive scholarship is impeccable and the style superb. Poznansky is one of the only serious scholars, who can put together a well researched biography with style, flair and clarity that will satisfy the most stringent musicologist, while also entertaining and moving any Tchaikovsky admirer.

Extraordinary tool for writers and analysts
As an IT consultant I do a lot of writing and create a lot of graphics to reinforce my words. Before discovering this gem my primary graphics reference was Information Graphics by Robert L. Harris, which is a comprehensive encyclopedia of technical graphics. Thinking Visually will not replace that book, but will augment it because this book is more of a how-to and is focused on 14 basic diagrams that I find myself using in one variation or another in nearly every project. The book is divided into three parts: (1) Introduction to Diagramming, which is among the best descriptions of diagramming and how to approach it that I've had the pleasure of reading; (2) APplying the Core Diagrams, and (3) Introduction to Diagramming, which is an extension of Part 1 that wraps up the book with excellent advice.

Part 2 is the heart of the book. The core Diagrams are divided into six groups: (1) MAPPING THE BUSINESS (System Maps, Mind Maps), (2) RELATIONSHIP AND INFLUENCE (Relationship, Tree, Influence), (3) CONTROL IN BUSINESS (Input/Output, Control), (4) CAUSATION (Multiple Cause, Fishbone [also called Ishikawa], Sign), (5) CHANGE (Force-field, Window), (6) FLOW (Flow, Ring).

Many of the diagrams have multiple instances. For example, flow diagrams can take the form of flow process, blocks, algorithms (flow charts) or network diagrams. Likewise, window diagrams take on many different forms, including strength/weakness/opportunity/threat (SWOT), quad matrices (such as the "Boston Matrix"). This extends the 14 core diagrams into many more because of the variations, with all of the major ones discussed in this book.

What I especially like is the way the author presents each diagram: overview of the diagram, business application, business purpose and summary and conventions. When variations are discussed, such as a critical path network diagram derived from a flow, the same treatment is given.

As I read through this book familiarizing myself with these basic tools I discovered that my primary software tool, Visio, contained stencil sets for many of these diagrams, including Mind Mapping, SWOT Fishbone and many more. I also liked the final part of the book because it contains valuable advice on managing information with the core diagrams - especially developing diagrams that convey information instead of resulting in information overload. The chapter on diagramming theory and some of its pitfalls was also excellent. Finally, Appendices A and B, only two pages, are incredibly useful because they map the core diagrams to themes (Appendix A) and to management activity (Appendix B). These make selecting the right tool for the right job easy, and their inclusion is a nice touch of added value.

I cannot praise this book highly enough. It has quickly become one of my most valuable tools and has also enlightened me on a number of issues and factors related to effectively selecting and using diagrams. It merits 5 stars!

Excellent reference to graphical representation
This is an excellent book of templates for graphical visulization of complex information. I think that this book belongs right on the bookshelf of anyone who uses line graphics for research and business...right next to Tufte's classics. Highly recommended.

A Translation of Jerome's Chronicon With Historical Commentary

A Review of "A Translation of St. Jerome's Chronicon."
This book, "A Translation of St. Jerome's Chronicon With Historical Commentary," a work for the serious scholar, contains St. Jerome's Latin continuation to Eusebius' "Chronological Canons with an Epitome of Universal History, Both Greek and Barbarian." The editor/author Malcolm Drew Donalson, who has prepared an English translation of Jerome's Latin continuation to Eusebius's Greek "Chronicon," has produced a solid, well documented study. Note that this text contains only St. Jerome's continuation from AD 327-379 and is not the complete Eusebius-Jerome "Chronicon."

Donalson has done a fine job of translating and coordinating the commentary which follows the translation of Jerome's Latin text. The bibliography and notes are useful to any scholar interested in Late Antique historiography. Helpful, too, is the reprint of the edition by R. Helm's "Eusebius' Werke 5: Die Chronik des Hieronymus," which allows the reader access to a text not otherwise readily available.

The real tour de force is Donalson's preparation of a complex text using several type faces and sizes and languages (Greek, Latin, German, etc.) as well as footnotes and a excellent bibliography. Just formatting and preparing such a complex text for publication must have been difficult. However, the end product is useful, usable, and a welcome addition to body of scholarly work on St. Jerome.
