The roleplaying supplement your preacher warned you about.
Remember when every barely informed Chicken Little was worried that roleplaying games were a guide to evil?

This is the book they were scared of.

In the pages of "Infernalism: The Path of Screams," the writers explore why sane and intelligent people would embrace evil, what it means to be evil and the cost. It's not pretty, it's not attractive, but it's some of the most thought-provoking reading I've come across, game-related or no.

It's absolutely essential for the wonderful "Mage: The Sorcerers Crusade" game, incredibly useful for the whole family of World of Darkness games and is, frankly, worth getting for any RPG game master whose game features servants of darkness (I'm planning on dusting it off and using it for an upcoming Dungeons and Dragons adventure, for instance, to add some weight to the classic evil wizards and clerics).

This is a book for genuinely mature readers not because there's blood and gore and bare breasts -- none of that has anything to do with maturity in modern society -- but because it asks you to think hard about moral choices and the impact they have on a person and their world.

Quite simply one of the best RPG books of all time.

The Devil Gets His Due.
Since time out of mind, the role-playing genre has been filled with antagonists who are EVIL, because (as far as we can deterime)they can be. From the very earliest RPGs to the best of the contemporary, the "evil" villian has been "gyped" for one reason or another. INFERNALISM: THE PATH OF SCREAMS finally gives the Devil his literary due. This book takes the servant of evil archtype of "I am evil, ha-hah-hah." and transforms it into a three-diminsional persona; one that almost anyone could sympathize with. This book is a neccessity for ANYONE who plays ANY role-playing games.

One word comes to mind: "WOW!"
Get this book no matter what game you play, it is useful in more then a Mage:TSC game. I plan on using it specifically for Shadowrun in fact. This book covers WHY someone would traffic with evil, no matter if that evil is Satan, corrupted spirits, Horrors or insect spirits.

The quotes are excellent, the writing superb...and despite the constant notes that this is NOT an Infernal Players Guide...guess what, that's what it is. So go ahead and follow the Path of Screams, tell em Ken sent ya ;)

Cat Stories
Jarrod Hawk 11/4 Cat Stories review

Dr. James Herriot, a veterinarian in North Yorkshire, England, wrote Cat Stories. He lives in a beautiful estate on a hill with a large wall around it. He visited many animals and is well known by many people for his many adventures and his style of storytelling. Cat Stories is an autobiographical book, so Dr. Herriot is the main character in most of the stories. He has written several books including All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, All Things Wise and Wonderful, The Lord God Made Them All, Every Living Thing, and James Herriot's Dog Stories. He retired after 50 years of treating mostly domestic farm animals. The conflicts in most of his stories are man to self or man to nature, because he tries his best to try to think of what to do for the animal and has to remember something. He helps all kinds of people, from young farmers, to wealthy old ladies. Dr. James Herriot is a good man with a large heart. In one of the cat stories, He visits an old lady, Mrs. Ainsworth who owns two basset hounds. She calls Herriot whenever one of her dogs does anything unusual. In the story there is a stray cat that comes to visit Mrs. Ainsworth. The rising action started when Herriot saw the cat and inquired about her. The Mrs. Ainsworth told Herriot that the cat was a stray and she had named her Debbie. The climax comes on Christmas Day, when Dr. Herriot gets a call from Mrs. Ainsworth about Debbie. He then proceeds to her house to check on Debbie. She was stretched out on the floor and motionless. However, she had brought a kitten in with her because she knew that it would be well cared for in the house. In the falling action this kitten grew into an energetic cat, which Mrs. Ainsworth called Buster. On one of his later visits, Herriot finds out that Buster would chase a rubber ball and bring it back to whoever threw it. He was a Feline Retriever! Mrs. Ainsworth said that Buster was the best Christmas present she had ever received In another story, Olly and Ginny, the Herriot's adopted cats, are fed and cared for by Mr. and Mrs. Herriot. He has to treat them, so they think of him as the bad guy. Later, He tries to make friends with Olly, and succeeds. Days later, however, Olly dies. The Herriots were devastated. Mr. Herriot then decides to try to make friends with Ginny, although she was the more skittish of the two cats. He slowly makes progress and begins to make friends with Ginny. After several months, He starts to pet the cat from head to tail. The two were finally friends. Mr. Herriot considered this one of his greatest triumphs. In conclusion, as you may see Mr. Herriot does many great, and strange, things. I believe this is why so many people love his books. His books seem to be larger than life, but they are actually true. I feel that his many adventures capture and mystify many people, and that is why his books are so well known. Dr. Herriot died unfortunately in 1995, but I believe he had a great life.

Cat Stories
Cat StoriesBy James Herriot p. 155

This is a good book for people who like animal stories. The story is full of stoires that evoke different feelings. James Herriot tells you eventful tales of his social life with cats. He is a vet and lives with his wife in a little town. They also have a cabin in the hills a couple miles away. It's modern time so every one has running water, electricity, etc. He talks about his feelings, emotions, and actions he has to take concerning his cat patients. He also explains his encounters with two strange kittens, called Ginny and Otis, that he encounters at his cabin . He tell about how he tries to protect them from the cruelness of the world when their mother leaves them. Some of these events are predictable so you won't get blown away if something terrible happens. For example, when one of the cats James adopts runs away for the first time, or when you know the mother cat will have kittens and it's really not a medical problem. When you read this story the theme James Herriot is trying to tell you is to take all of the time you're given in the world to enjoy everyone and everything around you, because you'll never know when you will be able to see or love them again.

Cat Stories is the best cat book I've ever read!

James Herriot's Cat Stories is a one of a kind book. It is full of wonderful stories, and will be very much enjoyed by anyone interested in cats. It surpassed my expectations as a great book, and I think anyone who has read it would agree.

Small town nightmare that could be right next door
I've never looked at an egg the same way since! This book scared my hair gray! The characters in this story were completely believable. The authors use of landmarks and route names makes this story utterly believable. A must read!!

Beautiful, spare, moving ....
I read this book several years back and loved it. Recently, it came to mind again and I had to hunt it down. I was lucky enough to find a signed first edition. This story is so simple and heartfelt. The story of two men, their relationship, their friends and keen, sweet observations of their friend's relationships. The tragedy is unexpected and deepy moving. Davis prose is so captivating that I really felt as if I was there. Actually, I wanted to be there. I wanted to help these people and spend a sunny afternoon having cocktails on beach with them. I really do not want to say much about the story, it needs to be experienced by the reader. If you can find this and take the journey, you will be rewarded for your effort.

Simple, Powerful, Compelling
Christopher Davis is one of those authors who is not praised nearly loudly or often enough, and whom I discovered by accident. I first read his work in Men on Men. His short story in that collection, "The Boys in the Bars," is also the title of his own short story collection that came later.

Joseph and the Old Man is easily read in one sitting. it is reminiscent in many ways of Isherwood's A Single Man.

Joseph is the much-younger lover of a famous author whom he calls "The Old Man," and in this chapter-less story, it turns out to be the Old Man's story, but told in the third person. How they met, how they love each other, and how they become the center of a loving circle of friends on Fire Island, and what happens when tragedy (sudden, and not AIDS) strikes, is told with stunning simplicity. I read this book in two days. It was hard to put down.

A beautiful story
I read this book a few years ago but the bittersweet emotions it evoked in me still echo in my heart. Even today I can feel the warmth of the relationship between the Joseph and the Old Man as clearly as if they were my dearest friends. The ending of the novel, both ambiguous and haunting, is one of my favorite literary passages.

A "wake-up call" for educators
As a person who has spent 35 years in education, I found Ms. Edwards book to be a straightforward, knowledgeable treatise on both the successes and the failures in education. I share her belief that money alone is not the key to better education. Let's try better administrators; real (not fake) emphasis on academics, giving teachers time to teach and an environment in which this can be done; strong parenting so students come to school motivated to learning. This book should be read by ALL educators.

P.T.A.'s need to read this bookfor a reality check
A great book. that needs to be read by every parent and politician. Realistic overview of a public school .in this day and time. What will happen in the future? We need to do something about the lack of respect for teachers and schools.Humorous approach to a serious situation.

A real teacher wrote a real book about real problems
I wish every legislator, each state's educational commissioner, each governor, each superintendent, each principal ( and Oprah) would read this book. This book tells what the real world of a teacher is and more importantly, it addresses what changes could and should be made.

The Real Deal - Abani has it all!
Chris Abani is that rare gift to the world -- someone who was born a writer and who suffered great atrocity. He has combined these two facts to bring back poetry from hell -- poetry that sings! that grieves! that laughs and rocks and wails! He breaks down walls and brings forth unimaginable pain only to lay it before you -- gracefilled and beating like an undeniable human heart. Here it is, he says, here is humanity in all its grand perversion and its unmistakable diginity and hope. I was lucky enough to see Abani read and he is someone who is in this closed off world who is out there sharing, must share, and he makes the world a better place by doing so. Let's only hope the world gives back to him now, finally, the rich fruits of kindness and love and understanding that he deserves! And he plays a mean sax too!!!

A Stunning Achievement
This book is a stunning achievement. I went from poem to poem in amazement at this writers ability to capture those moments of horror he endured as a political prisoner and transform them. Like Yeats said "a terrible beauty is born"

This is a splendid example of the poetry of witness and I think it belongs in the company of Akhmatova's Requiem. When she was asked "Can you describe all this/and I said I can".

That is what this writer did, with words of power and grace, that will linger in anyone's head. It is fortunate to come upon them.

The poems on London filled me with longing for that city one never tires of.

Buy this book. It will change your life.

Dark Light
Abani's book left me speechless. At the horror. The pain and the inhumanity of other people.

It also left me speechless with regard to myself. It reminded me of what is important in life and how important it is, at whatever level, to do the right thing, no matter how difficult.

The poet's tale of incaceration for his writing in Nigeria's old regimes is a humbling one. It is also an inspiring one. No other book in the last ten years has moved me as much.

The poems are beautifully balanced pieces with a clear narrative. The Language, while simple, achieves a complex poetic form - the rendering of life into words.

This book is a must read!!!!

An outstanding book by a great author.
After having read Legacy I had all of my beliefs about the Great Walter Annenberg confirmed. This man is truely a great and magnanimous individual. His donations are really unprecedented and you could say he has done more for education than any other American. I truely love this man. As an alum of the Peddie school I was astounded by his massive gift in 1993 and I do hope his actions will inspire other alumni to make similiar or even larger gifts.

An American 20th century story of the highest order
In this engaging and wonderfully written biography, Ogden describes with consummate skill the origins, careers, hardships and accomplishments of two remarkable men, Walter Annenberg and his father, Moses. Facinating insights on business dealings (sometimes hardball), White House maneuverings (not always exemplary), politics, government, social discimination and class structure in America from the end of the 19th century to the present abound. The childhoods and early family environments of both Annenbergs (quite different for each) are well described. The complexity of the father/son relationship (partly due to very different temperaments) and its continuing influence long after Moses Annenberg's death in 1942 is especially poignant. One need not have a special interest in media empires to find this book engrossing; an interest in the capacity to endure, adapt creatively, and prevail in stunning and magnanimous fashion is quite sufficient. This is a distinctly American 20th century story of the highest order.

An American epic that has it all
Just finished Legacy after a whirlwind of reading. Couldn't put it down. Each chapter of this brilliant biography flowed into the next. Author Ogden has done a magnificent job of weaving this father/son story together, managing to illustrate much of the American century through their compelling (and inspring) tale. Reads like a great novel. I will be recommending Legacy to everyone I know.

Helpful review of selected fathers
I found this book to be very useful, but in a rather limited way. While Hall clearly is a master in his field, he falls into the common pitfall of most books of this sort. In a sense this is unavoidable, but then the title should not be taken to mean (or meant to mean) that the book covers all the main themes on a given subject in the fahters. I do not mean the minor opinions of some main fathers either. For example, in his discussion on the human condition, ,Hall fails to represent the Eastern Orthodox tradition in any way. What is represented is the typical Augustine vs. Pelagius dispute with the mediating roman council's declaration on the matter. This misses so much of what the eastern fathers have to say on the matter. Again, this is a great book, but it is not representative of the fathers as a whole. It fails to capture the patristic mind.

I guess my qualm is more with what I expected thebook ot be based upon teh fathers and not with the book as such, but the title should really be something more like "Selected themes from selected fathers". But who, besides geeks like me, would read a book with that title?
Enjoy the read!

Theology based on "The Faith Once Delivered"
Probably more books have been written in the last 50 years on "pop theology" in the religious book market than any other type of book. Now here is a book on the ancient faith that was delivered to the ancient church.

It is not "easy beliveism" but is rich with the words of the Apostles and those who sat at their feet.

Both comforting and challenging, it is a most valuable resource for a serious seeker.

Excellent book.
This is an excellent overview of the theological approach to Christian doctrine as practiced by the early Church Fathers. While Hall's previous book in the series lacked some degree of practicality, this book is full of useful historical and doctrinal detail in dealing with how the Church explored issues such as the Trinity, the Divine-Human Nature of Christ, and Original Sin and Human Nature. A must for anyone interested in rediscovering the ancient ways of thinking about the Christian Faith. I can't wait for the third in the series dealing with spirituality, prayer, and the sacraments.
