A statistics book that is easy to read and understand.
I had the great pleasure of learning from this book when it was still in manuscript form. For the first time in my long history as a student I found that I understood the text at first reading! The chapters generally present two approaches: the technical (scary!) and the commonsense -- with the latter truly written in a commonsensical fashion. In fact, it is so well written that it is possible to go over the material on one's own. The book is pricey, but it delivers on its promise.

Masterful and thoughtful book on post-critical perspectives.
Changing Literacies is composed of three parts: (1) critical literacy and cultural perspectives; (2) literacy and social justice; and (3) literacy, new technologies and old patterns. Within these three parts, the book explores inter and trans-penetrations of the pedagogical and the popular. Locating "critical" as "an essentially contested concept" (p. 42), Colin Lankshear presents an impressive work on post-critical perspectives. Post-critical because the book moves beyond an analysis of the ways in which human possibility has been impeded by educational theory and practice. The book provides a deep analysis about the ways in which capitalism swallows any attempt of democracy and social emancipation and how this process is connected to the new "work" order. At the same time, the book offers new horizons of critical perspectives in which language, technologies, and re-conceptualizations of social constructions move us beyond the realm of realities. Colin Lankshear and co-authors James Paul Gee and Michele Knobel deserve, without hesitation, outstanding recognition for this book.

The Complex Secret of Brief Psychotherapy: A Panorama of Approaches (Master Work Series)
Published in Paperback by Jason Aronson (1997)
Author: James Paul Gustafson
Amazon base price: $30.00
Used price: $15.82
Average review score:

A smorg of useful information
(I am reviewing from an original copy - 1986)

Gustafson takes the reader on a tour of the theories and therapies that have informed his practice over his career. Beginning with Freud and Breuer, Gustafson includes the work of Ferenczi, Rank, Reich, Alexander & French, Sullivan, Winnicott, Balint, Gedo, Havens, Malan, Mann, Sifneos, Davanloo, Bateson, the Milan teams, and Maturana.

Each chapter is designed to pull what Gustafson feels is the essence of the method of each of these therapists and he typically uses one of the therapists' cases as well as one of his own as a way to demonstrate that the work of the masters is possible to adapt and be made workable for oneself.

In the end, Gustafson works towards a "method of methods", setting a structure (beginning, middle and end) for brief therapy, within which one applies the methods of whichever theorist best matches the dynamics of the patient.

For all of his cases, he includes in the back of the book a full clinical review based on the case files of the clients. This way, the reader can see the whole picture of the case and not just the truncated view within the chapter itself.

This text has extensive endnotes and references. I started with this text a decade ago and have worked my way through nearly every original source since. It is an excellent way to shape one's theoretical and clinical world.

Great Choice
As a long time visiter to the Owens Valley I found this book to be excellent. Its great for the first time traveler or the person who has been to the valley many times. Its section on side roads is good for those passing through the area and wanting to explore a bit. The history and geology areas are current and answer those questions that arise when encountering the vast numbers of different geological features. While no one guide does it all this book comes close. A great book for those who want a general guide to the valley, its history, geology, flora and fauna.
