This beautiful book opens many doors
I thought Tigers would be great to use for a presentation as a lesson in an English language development (ESL) class. And it also would be a good interdisciplinary assignment--write it in English class and illustrate it in Art class. It would also be a good writing-across-the-curriculum activity for the art class. I showed it to my high school class today and we had a great discussion about proverbs and sayings in various cultures. A Punjabi girl who recently enrolled in my class shared one with us and it was the first time she had spoken up in class so I was pleased. It is interesting to see how many of the same ideas transcend language and culture and this beautiful book opens the door to have that conversation. Susan Davis, English teacher, Modesto, CA

Tigers, Frogs, and Rice Cakes arrived by UPS one morning.
I read it during my lunch time, enjoying it thoroughly. Not only is it a work of art, but a work of wisdom as well. A key to the proverbs at the back of the book was helpful in articulating these Korean pearls of wisdom.

I think my favorite on "character" is "It is dark at the base of the lamp." On "cooperation," I especially liked, "An empty push cart makes more noise." On "eating," I loved," Licking the outside of the watermelon." These proverbs help me see and understand human frailty, while suggesting something greater to strive for. They are whimsical, correcting me gently for my oversights. A great book for anyone under the age of 112.

An excellent Primer
This book shows that it's 15 years old however, the techniques that are explained in words and pictures, step by step are an excellent source for both the beginner and the advanced decorator. A great deal of information is packed into the 320 pages. the book has examples of modelling, piping techniques, lace, filigree work, run-outs etc. and should prove a sound primer.

Pure Inspiration!
No one is more fascinated by an intricately decorated cake, than children. No matter what the occasion, they adore an imaginative display of icing and candy. Why else would anyone want to make a "Spiders' Web Cake" for Halloween, "A Fairy tale Castle Cake" for a birthday, or a "Sand Castle Cake" in the summer?

Brides will also love the "Basket Weave Wedding Cake." There is also an adorable "Teddy Bear Christening Cake." Even if you never plan to make any of these cakes, the pictures are pure inspiration.

If you just want to make a simple batch of cookies, a banana bread, or a whole wheat bread, those recipes are here as well. Each of the recipes are fully illustrated and if you love baking....beware!

The "Marzipan Roses" and "Tia Maria Gateau" will soon seduce you and if you buy this book and don't bake anything.......all I can say is: "This makes a great coffee table book."

Just the recipes I wanted!
I saw James and Andrew teach at Sur la Table last fall and I thought their recipes were delicious! I remain particularly smitten by the old-fashioned brownies (with frosting!) and the gingersnaps. There are several other typical cafe recipes in here--biscotti, some tasty scones, more cookies. There aren't a ton of recipes, but every one of them is for something you already know you love--no weirdos. The book is beautiful and the recipes work--what more could you ask for? Maybe someone to make the coffee.

I bought, I read, I ate!
Bake and Freeze Desserts is a great way to learn about baking while producing fantastic desserts to eat immediately and/or freeze for later! Elinor's recipe's console me, an amateur cook, and lead me through the recipes with ease. She answers every question as it pops into my head and I always learn something about ingredients or techniques when I read and use her books. I love how Elinor tells you how the batter will look or when you know a cake is done. And how great to spend a free evening baking to pull out a fabulous dessert a few weeks later to amaze and delight your friends?! I highly recommend Bake and Freeze Desserts to those used to baking and to those who aren't!

The Best
We first checked this book out from the library and loved it so much we bought one. This is great for young chefs and the parents who love them to spend some time together. The directions are easy and they are fun to make. We made the caterpillar for a 6th birthday and it was a big hit. It made the occasion more special.

Lots of good stuff to bake as gifts
The synopsis that appears with this book, is not for this book at all. There is no mince pie or ginerbread in this book. This is no countdown calendar, either.

However, I really like this book for what it does have: cookies that pack well to mail to faraway friends, some interesting biscotti recipes (I can't wait to try the cranberry pistachio one), and special holiday breads and cakes, including some unusual fruitcakes (one made with dried berries instead of that yucky, gooey stuff in most fruitcakes).

10 Stars if I Could!
Buy this book now! Even if you never make any of the recipes, the pictures and layout are worth the price.

If you're a novice baker, this isn't the book for you. Some of the recipes are a bit involved. You must, must make the Kranz Cake, even if it does demand an overnight rest of the dough...

Bear in mind this is a British book, so you'll need a set of scales as well as a Fahrenheit/Celsius conversion to make anything from the book (unless this edition is already converted - I got my copy in the UK).
