A wonderful parody of what life was like in the years when "the phrase 'two-income family' was but a twinkle in the eye of an economist...". Some truly amazing and unappetizing recipes (and illustrations to boot!) for cakes that, yes, your mother and or grandma may very well have tried in a desperate attempt to salvage domestic serenity. Nonetheless, a must have for those who are not afraid to put 7-Up into batter or pour boiling water over salt pork to make a cake. Stick to the first two or three recipes, and you can't go wrong. Bon appétit!

I recommend this book to anyone who loves to entertain. The cakes are so simple and easy to make with excellent step by step easy directions. Each recipe has a clear one page picture and useful tips on how to decorate. Which I really like so I can get an idea of how the cake should look and be decorated. This book is a great buy for the cake lover!

A bright and friendly lift-the-flap book. The flaps are indestructable, and the photographs are clear and interesting, featuring young toddlers in familiar settings. The story line is simple and repetitive: Cathy is looking for her (first) birthday cake. Appropriate for children as young as 9 or ten months old; my son is 2 and still enjoys it. Other books in the series include Billy's Boots, Ken's Kitten, and Meg's Monkey

This book is a compliation of traditions and recipies for each month of the year. It has a nice combination of historical and more modern traditions. I have used it for a few parties and found it to be quite inspirational.

This book has excellent, if sometimes difficult recipes for everything from simple loaf cake to fancy cheese cake layered with coffee cake and fruit. I have not been even remotely dissapointed with any of the 10 (out of more than 70) cakes I've made. If you like to bake and are looking for different and delicious this has to be on your shelf.

If you ever need a coffee cake for that special occasion, this is the place to look. The recipes can be made by the home baker without difficulty and use ingredients that are easy to find. There is good variety in flavor, including apple, blueberry, apricot, almond, cranberry, rhubarb and more. All are delicious, and the book makes a GREAT gift.

Colette Peters is a true artist. Her cakes, which I've seen in person, are remarkable. Her books are very thorough and concise. I am no artist, but I have made several of her cakes and they all turned out great! She is able to explain the cake-making process so that even I can understand how to do it. I have all her books and love them all!

If you have any experience of gum paste flowers you will love this book. Excellent clear step by step colour pictures and good explanatory text. Glorious pictures of finished cakes and flower bouquets. Not for the beginner though as some of the techiniques are quite complex. Buy this book if you are looking for inspiration and a challenge .

Last year, I asked my friend Katty, who lives in the United States to order this book for me (I still have some problems to order from here). The matter is that I was not actually sure if it would be a good book. Now, I do not repent having bought it. It is a very good book, all recipes have a beautiful photo, and you can find basic recipes in it: layer, fruit cake, glacé, frostings, and more. Explanations are very clear too. Be sure you will find many creative ideas here. Buy it!
