Learning from La Jolla : Robert Venturi remakes a museum in the precinct of Irving Gill

Excellent!
This is a very handsome book - of great interest for architectural buffs or historians. It pairs two great architects - Robert Venturi and Irving Gill - in a unique, engaging, and informative way. The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (in La Jolla, California)is one of the finest small museums in the country, well worth a visit to see outstanding architecture as well as cutting-edge contemporary art.

Gem of a book for a gem of a museum
This is an outstanding book for anyone interested in the work of two great architects - Robert Venturi and Irving Gill. The combination of their work at the museum in La Jolla is masterful, and this book gives a fascinating look into the museum's history and Venturi's thought processes as he sought to restore the historic "Scripps House" while expanding and modernizing the Museum of Contemporary Art. A great find - makes me want to visit La Jolla and see it for myself!

Another Venturi Classic
Buy this book even if you've never been to the La Jolla museum it describes. If you've been to the museum, it's worth buying to give you pause to reflect on what you've seen. This book offers both the history and theory behind Venturi's reshaping of a wonderful museum in an attractive location. Those of us who remember the museum in the old days have got to be impressed with what Venturi has done. Although this text is all too brief, it provides the illumination needed to appreciate more fully this California classic.

Forget the Movie
The 1976 film version of this show has been JUSTIFIABLY panned. Forget it. Listen instead to the soundtrack album and bask in what is Sondheim's most lilting score. An entire musical in triple time written by a composer at the height of his powers: What more could one ask??

Excellent Score
I absolutely love this musical, and to own the score of one of the best musicals ever is great! Stephen Sondheim is a musical genius. If you have not heard or seen this musical, you must buy this score!

Beautiful dialogue. It is charming and elegant!!!
Stephen Sondheim's lyrics are moving even if you are not familiar with his charming music. Even those who do not like musicals will like the book of this show. It is intelligent....yet moving.

This is THE travel guide for Kenya
I was simply stunned by the number of detailed maps in this book. The amount of information for each region of Kenya is outstanding and well done. If you need to know it - it's in this book. Hotels, restaurants, parks, reserves, tribes, Swahili it's all here. Very nicely organized.

a must for traveling in Kenya
This book is perfect for traveling the roads of Kenya. I used it when I spent 9 months in Kenya. It lists every detail of the area very accurately. I would not travel without it.

An excellent investment for virtually everyone
This book, and its relative, the guide to East Africa, got me (and my husband) comfortably through 8 weeks of travel in East Africa. It was equally useful for the trip where I was a woman traveling alone, and the trip I took with my never-been-to-the-third-world dyed-in-the-wool- American husband. The only travellers who PERHAPS might not benefit from this book are people on top-shelf tours that ensure that the travellers' feet never really touch the ground. But I truly think that everyone else will find it well worth the few dollars and the few ounces in their luggage, whether that luggage is a matched leather set or a backpack. the history, the explanations of local occurrences, the accurate and pragmatic tips and techniques for getting around/eating/shopping/sleeping/safari-ing/living are difficult to survive without

I Agree
I have to agree with the two previous reviewers, Burgundy is a very special part of France, and a very special part of the world. It is worth seeing just for the vineyards alone, but there is so much more to Burgundy than just wine. If you're lucky enough to go there, take this book along. It will be an invaluable guide to the restaurants and hotels in the area as well as to the festivals, concerts, etc. And if you must stay at home, then this book is the next best thing to actually being there. The photos are gorgeous and the text informative. Five stars is not enough!

A Beautiful Book About a Beautiful Place
My sister and I recently toured Burgundy and even though we were born and bred in France, we saw the region anew. The photos in this book are lovely and for once, do a place justice. If you plan to travel to Burgundy, and may I suggest that you do, you certainly can't go wrong with this book as a traveling companion and tour guide.

A MAGICAL PLACE WHERE FANTASY MEETS REALITY
France is a magical place and Burgundy is one of its most magical regions. The premier wine-growing region of France, Burgundy is also the center of fine cuisine, Romanesque architecture and lazy canals bordered by meadows of wildflowers. This book, with its more than 260 color illustrations, shows Burgundy at its finest. A region dominated by water, the book begins in the north and travels through all of Burgundy's four departments. From the Yonne, a land of peaceful river valleys and almost 1000 canals, we travel southward with the author to visit little Romanesque churches and learn how the Benedictine and Cistercian monks spread the Romanesque style. We finally arrive in the southernmost department of Soane-et-Loire and the city of Macon, the border to the Midi and the South, where we sample some of the finest wines in the world, such as Montrachet and Pommard. Burgundy is one of the most beautiful places on earth--unspoiled, unhurried and faithful to its past. Whether you plan to actually visit the area or are just dreaming of a visit, this is the perfect book to accompny you and your dreams and perhaps even make make them come true.

A Must Read For African Americans In The New Millennium
This book was an awesome read. Fraser was focused and expected nothing but the best from himself and others. He recognized the role that race plays in our society; however, he refused to allow it to limit his personal or business life. He offered insight on how to succeed as a minority in corporate America by encouraging and promoting racial pride, self-help, and self-development. This book will encourage anyone, however it should be required reading for all minorities. In spite of all of life's challenges, including the color of my skin, the author inspired me to push, dig, fight, and expect to win this game called life.

Don't hesitate-buy this book immediately
This book is tremendous. It actually exceeded my expectations. This is one of those rare times when a book lived up to it's hype. I have already read certain parts over again. It serves as a constant source of inspiration. It g ives you an opportunity to focus on the areas of interest to YOU. My favorite sections is the contact information in the back of the book, and the seven morals and principles of success.

Unusually POWERFUL and UNIQUE
"Race For Success" is the fuel necessary to participate in this marathon called "Life." An unsually powerful and unique combination of sound principles, historical perspective, motivation, knowledge and resources, the book is a true call to action. It is a tool for personal growth, economic empowerment, community revitalization, and much, much, more.

Great for beginning or experienced scholars
A great intro to the important figures in Christian thought but also a great review course for those who think they've read it all before. Well-written with substantial pieces from women theologians as well as black and liberation perspectives, plus noted theologians such as Thomas Merton, Karl Rahner, etc. Each selection has a very detailed introduction and commments on the life of each theologian and the historical and spiritual significance of his work. Sure to be used for years to come!

Outstanding introduction
I've found this book extremely valuable on two levels: first, it provides an excellent introduction to nearly all of the important Christian theologians and thinkers of the last two millenia - Kerr does a generally excellent job at providing context and the overall significance of each text and author; second, and more personally, Kerr's book has inspired me to pursue many of these theologians to a greater depth and has led me to a new appreciation of the theology of the early church fathers. Again, highly recommended.

Amazing how deep the thoughts of the church fathers.
I would not call this an "easy read." It is, however very worth the effort to do so. The book provides a short explanation of the views and circumstances surrounding a variety of important founding church fathers. You can read the arguments of men such as Justin Martyr, Thomas Aquinus, and Duns Scotus. Their defense of Christianity, known as Apologetics is logical and powerful. How do you prove the existence of God? A difficult question but one these men tackled and did a wonderful job. I recommend it for the library of the serious reader.

a classic on the arctic
Paul Nicklen was raised in the Arctic. (on Baffin Island) perhaps that is why he understands the special beauty of the Arctic and was able to capture it in his photographs.

Incredible photography
This is an incredible collection of photos. I relived my Arctic experiences and could feel the cold and hear the quiet. This collection will remain with me forever and my compliments go out to the artist. I look forward to another publication in the near future.

Awesome photos
Received the book as a gift and thought that the photos were absolutely incredible. These pictures have made me want me to visit the Arctic. I think this is one of the finest publications for coffee table books and have put it on my Christmas list.

A must have reference...
For the busy orthopaedic surgeon and resident, this text should be "required". Hoppenfeld accomplishes the unenviable task of providing a text with concise explanations of surgical exposure with excellent illustrations. Relevant anatomy is clearly conveyed to the surgeon performing the dissection. In addition, the text serves well as a five to ten minute refresher prior to the operation at hand.

An Orthopaedic Bible
A clear, concise and beautifully illustrated hardback book. I cannot see how this book can become outdated which is why I forked out the small fortune to buy it! No regrets though- this book really is worth every penny/cent

simply the best
those who are blest with a perfect recall of anatomy do not need this book but the rest will find its thorough yet simple guide to surgical approaches an invaluble aid to safe practice.

Open Up Your Eyes
I don't think I could add more than the Julian Barham review except to say, I love this book! This is the fourth book of the jungle series. I would recommend that one read the jungle series in order (i.e., Government, Carreta, March to the Monteria, Trozas, Rebellion of the Hanged, General from the Jungle). It is not absolutely necessary to read them in order but some characters show up in the later books (e.g., Don Gabriel from "Goverment" is referred to quite often, and Andres from "the Carreta" is present in the March to the Monteria and Trozas, amongst others). The characters from previous books are not necessarily covered in detail, so having this background of info about them sort of solidifies the story. The path of the characters is intertwined throughout the series.

I usually don't assign myself to such reading, like it's some sort of required reading for a class but in my opinion this is some of the most insightful and compelling writing I have ever read. Go Traven!

Excellent description of life in the Monterias
I trully enjoyed the book, once I picked it up I could not put it down. I never realized the hard work and effort taken to bring us the mahogony. And the life of the indians under the rule of the "Patrones", conquistadores. Slavery was not legal in Mexico, instead a life long debt was incurred to keep the peasants supressed and deprived of their freedom.

Man's inhumanity to man!
Trozas, Spanish for logs, is the fourth of six "Jungle Novels" by B. Traven, about the birth of the Mexican Revolution. The story centers around the exploitation of slave-laborers on a mahogany plantation, known as a monteria. There is little in the way of a conventional plot. Traven assumes the role of anthropologist as he explains the layout of a monteria, its power structure, the brutal methods used to exploit the Mexican Indians, and details of the daily grind they suffer as they cut down the trees, haul them with the aid of oxen through dense humid jungle which is infested with mosquitoes and biting flies, poisonous snakes, scorpions, panthers, and the cutting whips of the overseers. Though Traven's focus is on the corruption of the Diaz regime (1876-1910), the events that brought about his downfall, the social structure which places the illiterate dark-skinned Indians at the mercy of exploitive light-skinned Spaniards, the scheming-as-matter-of-policy among the local officials - from the police chiefs, judges, and tax assessors to the doctors, priests, monteria contractors and fincerias (the powerful landowners)- ultimately the book powerfully illustrates man's inhumanity to man. I was shocked and outraged - as I turned the pages - at the social structure which allowed this injustice to exist. (It is clear if one watches Mexican television programs - with light-skinned European looking men and women holding political office and on the soap operas and news, as well as the vast numbers of dark-skinned Indians migrating north to the U.S. in search of opportunity, that sadly little has changed since the Mexican Revolution). Trozas is also about human dignity in the face overwhelming suffering. Trozas is a grim book in a grim series of books, but an important one that needs to be read, for it enlightens the reader not only about Mexican history and the rise of the Mexican Revolution, but about the politics of evil and one aspect of the human condition. Traven has an easy, flowing style. He creates vivid characters and memorable scenes. He has an excellent ear for dialogue. Long after reading the book one can see and feel and hear the jungle and the pitiless human struggle for existence within it. This is a truly classic series of books which are gaining in popularity, especially on college campuses in Latino and ethnic studies classes. Traven for years languished in semi-obscurity, though he was once nominated for the Nobel Prize in literature. As the wave of class, race, ethnic, and gender studies has grown over the past two decades, Traven is being re-evaluated by critics and readers and is justly gaining in popularity and prestige.

Excellent guide to wineries in France
My husband and I wanted to do some time in "wine country" during our 1 year stay in France. We picked up this book at a local "english language library" and it was great! It really gives a lot of good information about the regions, the wineries, and the traveller's perspective on wine country in general. We've also used it extensively to document our pictures after the fact -- you know how you can forget the names of the 20 chateaux and 12 towns you visited! Well, this book provides enough information to put it back together when you are looking at a picture of a very pretty building which you cannot remember the name of.

It doesn't cover particular wines in detail (mentioning only a few), but for wineries, its a great guide.

very useful in locating wines and their vineyards
The Wine Atlas of France by Hubrecht Duijker (with support from Hugh Johnson) is the best way to start exploring the various famous French wine regions by car. After presentation of the history and a description of a particular wine region, the book lists the address and describes the important wine estates of the region. Suggested routes for driving as well as listings of the top regional restaurants and hotels, in order to recover from the wine tasting. Besides excellent maps of different scales to find your way round the book has superb pictures so that you know what to expect. Alternatively, you may first want to use the book to browse through the various wine regions. Even without using the book as a travel guide it is very useful in locating wines and their vineyards.

a must for travellers
This books contains informative descriptions, combined with detailed maps, and beautiful pictures, covering all the major wine producing regions of France. In addition, the author includes his favorite vineyards for each region. This book is a must for anyone travelling to France or just interested in learning more about the wine producing regions of France. Included in each section are a few selections on where to eat and where to stay as well. Having personally taken this book on my most recent trip, I can give it my hearty endorsement.
