Black Hills Ghost Towns
Watson Parker's book is a wonderful reference to use to understand the frenetic development of the Black Hills during its Gold Rush days. It also goes on to show the coming and going of little towns throughout the Black Hills. It is well organized and can easily lend itself to spending a day or more driving through the hills trying to find the remnants of the ghost towns. It is a book that I have gone back to year after year to learn about the Black Hills.

Excellent adventure story, with clever cartoon-style art.
Blue Bear's Race is one of my 3 1/2 year-old's favorite stories. We've been reading it for a year. She enjoys the excitement as the bears fly in the air and land on their respective hat and nose, resulting in a trip to a hospital. You'll find child-pleasing tidbits like "Put out that cigarette!" and the surgeon's cold paws. The artwork is as clever as the story-telling, drawn at imaginative angles such as a view over a car passing in the rain through the window at the two bears arguing inside. A pleasure for the parent, too, with its wry humor. I think of the first part as a story of consequences for irresponsible behavior, and the second part as a "prodigal son" type story as the bear friends and bear medical people nurse the injured bears back to health. I also liked the opportunity to give her a child's-eye view of a hospital and its workings.

Down to earth - a new parent's best friend
I purchased the book when I was pregnant with my son in England. I was so grateful for Jolly's no-nonsense approach to child rearing. For example, Jolly explains in this book that babies don't really need to be burped. Apparently, this is a Western society invention. Few cultures outside of Western society pick their babies up and rub or tap their backs after they take their bottles because gas comes up normally. He also said, "If your baby can take a bottle cold, straight from the refrigerator, then it's ok...there is no scientific reason for it to be warmed. This also saved me hours of sleep since my son was happy to have a cold bottle. The other pearl of wisdom that I loved was his advice to bring the baby in bed with you if you need to get some sleep. My son breast fed in our bed and I went to sleep since I no longer needed to "burp" him afterwards. Later, when we bottle fed him, we took the bottle right out of the refrigerator, fed him and then we all went to sleep in our double bed. We would wake up and our son would have the middle ground and my husband and I would be in a V around him. We all got more sleep that way and my son was a happy camper. Jolly gives sound advice that makes parenting during that first year a heck of a lot easier. I worshiped the man for letting parents off the hook...

The Book of the Fly Rod

Riviting and engaging reading at its best!
Reading this book puts one right on the ship with Mr. Grey, to wittness all the splendor and action that goes with deep-sea fishing. His descriptive writing technique is easy to understand, and beautifully captures in detail the beauty of the Tahitian waters, islands and people. Accompanied by spectacular photos, you can easily slip back to another time and place, when the fish were teaming and the islands pristine. On a side note, the references and brutality to sharks slightly disturbed me, for Mr. Grey claims to be a naturalist, how can he despise any living creature? I chalk it up to another era of outdated thinking, and today we know that sharks have a vital role in the oceans. All in all, I enjoyed this book very much and look forward to reading more of Mr. Grey's writing.

By His Stripes: Doctrine of Divine Healing
Published in Paperback by Gospel Pub House (1977)
Author: Hugh P. Jeter
Amazon base price: $4.95
Used price: $12.00
Average review score:

Divine Healing - the whole picture
Very readable book - short chapters (24 chapters in about 190 pages) with appropriate subheadings in the text. The chapter "Causes of sickness" includes "Recognizing the enemy" "The works of the Devil" "When God allows sickness" "Natural causes of sickness", and "Sickness as a result of mental stress". Chapter 22 "Healing through faith" includes "What faith is" "Importance of faith to healing" "Whose faith is necessary?" "Demonstration of faith" "Faith for what?" "Faith in what?"

Jeter doesn't make wild statements without substantiating them: the book is full of scripture references - even where he quotes examples we are probably all familiar with, like Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-11). The section headed "The works of the devil" (as a cause of sickness) mentions "Many of the healings of our Lord were effected by rebuking a 'spirit of infirmity' or casting out demons. (See Mark 9:22-24; Matthew 12:22; Luke 4:38, 39; 13:11; Mark 5:1-20.)"

Jeter gives a balanced view - he doesn't blame Satan for every cough or sneeze, neither does he conclude that all we should do to be healed is pray and believe. Another quote: "Although in the final analysis sin is the cause of sickness and death, we must not conclude that sin is directly responsible in every case." In the chapter "About doctors and medicines" Jeter says that it is not OK to discontinue medication if you have been prayed for WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE FACTS to see whether you have actually been healed - and that might include a return visit to a physician for an examination. Some people make the mistake of assuming they have been healed without looking at the evidence - this, he says, is not faith but presumption.

The book includes study questions for each chapter - referring to the text specifically, with page references. There is also an index at the back - very useful for reference purposes.

This is a book I will probably use for the rest of my life.
