Cyril Bonhamy and the Great Drain Robbery
Published in Audio Cassette by Chivers Audio Books (1995)
Amazon base price: $18.95
Average review score:

This book on tape is perfect for long car, bus, train, or plane rides. It's the story of Cyril Bonhamy, a hapless British tourist in Nice, France who somehow manages to get himself mixed up with one of France's most dangerous criminals. This is mostly due to the fact that he is under the impression that, even after all of these years, the French people really don't know how to speak their own language. He, on the other hand, speaks "fluent" French, which, of course, is really just English with a bad French accent. This story is incredibly funny. If you enjoy British humor (or, should I say humour), such as "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," then you will enjoy this story.

This is a wonderful play in which Leonard explores his relationship with his Da (a Dublin boys name for his father, pronounced with an "a" as in "at" and not as in "all") It was made into a film starring Martin Sheen, and that is best avoided. The character of Leonard as a boy with his father, and as an older man, returned for his father's funeral are played on stage by the same actor, who switches cleverly between the two roles. At one moment he is a wide eyed child who hangs on every word of his father, believing without question and revering his Da. Then he is the cynical and jaded older man, who cannot fathom the limitations and stupidity of both his younger self and his father. In the end however, we see a picture of a man who needs to reconcile himself with his father and does so through this play in a way that is passionate and personal.

This is the second volume of a collection of stories with a remit that seems to include anything that might be even remotely termed supernatural, and hence has a refreshing range and variety. I myself found it much better than the first volume. Like that volume, it contains a couple of weakish stories that tread old ground, and a large group of stories which are more than competent and perfectly readable and entertaining. (And I say this as a person not greatly into supernatural fiction.) But - and this is where it has the edge on the earlier book - there is also a group of really outstanding stories, whatever criteria you apply. Steve Duffy's 'Todhunter's Rock' is a brilliant tour de force, starting off in a metafictional way a la Calvino, then playing with the tropes and topoi of the bunch-of-marooned-suspects detective story, excellent vignettes within the genre, but also adding so much more, bringing in real excitement, and finally standing everything on its head, yet at the same time making you feel that's the way it has to be. Rhys Hughes' 'The Century Just Gone', after a slightly imperfect start - too much info dumping, however cleverly done - then takes off into an amazing concept (about the most evil people in the twentieth century) that only he is capable of, with a denouement utterly unexpected, and horrifically logical (and even throws in a Supermaggot!). Excellent! Steve Lockley and Paul Jones introduce the big boss of all angels in their story 'Gabriel Restrained', and at first I thought 'Oh no!', but they actually made it work, and the image of the angel patiently sitting there on the bed is still with me! (The story does suffer from a common flaw in this sort of thing - why would any god judge a whole race based on the actions of a single person?) Iain Darby has a most original story in 'Phylotas' Tomb' (think perfidious maiden and peculiarly nasty sacrifice!) with another perfect twist at the end, which brings together ancient Greek treachery with modern day error. And William Simmons' 'The Wind, When it Comes' is baffling, haunting, beautifully written. Also highly recommended are stories by Adrian Versteegh and SJ Pinborough (the latter recommended for people dissatisfied with their spouse!) Altogether,an admirably eclectic collection that should satisfy (and in some cases surprise)both new readers, and others already familiar with the editorial work of Maynard and Sims.

This is an excellent selection of Cave's pulp magazine weird-menace stories, mostly from the 30s and 40s. Evil lurks on every page, but did the unknown monster or a demon in more human form commit the ghastly murders? With stark pen and ink illustration by World Fantasy award winning artist Lee Brown Coye and editied by the late master of modern horror Karl Edward Wagner, this is perfect reading for a dark and stormy night

This book was one of the first that started my love for science fiction. It's about a crew of young men (almost boys) that travel in space to Mars. This was one of a series of books by Hugh Walters about the same crew going to the different planets in our solar system. With excitement, danger, true friendship it had everything needed for a good can't-put-it-down story!

Here, Deleuze and Parnet give very illuminating and interesting form to many of the ideas that will later be expressed w/Guattari in A Thousand Plateaus. Excellently translated and insightful-- as though one were listening to Deleuze with an acquaintance speaking of the direction of his theory in the 80's. Highly recommended.

Doctor Dolittle and the Pirates

I grew up with this book and always found it refreshing to see how someone's real character could be improved even if his outside seemed strongly bad. And, that a person's redemption could take place in his own life (ie. without the necessity of perishing, or being eaten first). Its charming and 'Yellow submarine'-stylish 1968 Dolittle plus the endearing portraits of the familiar push-me-pull-you and other characters combine with swashbuckled pirates in colorful scenery, and a non-preachy happy ending, to make the story a good bedtime reading for small children. I am pleased to pass this book's tattered pages on to our next generation. I hope that someday a publisher will decide to reprint this story: in doing so it would be choosing most wisely.
