This is an excellent book on Hitler and Nazism, a straight-forward, unbias book on how Adolf Hitler started, and finished. New information in this book makes it fresh to read. Anyone who wants to read a small book (155 pages) about Hitler and get straight to the point should get this book. Packed with pictures, the words and pictures help tell the story of Nazi Germany.

Deftly edited by Detlev Clemsn (Assistant Professor, Institute of Political Science, Friedrich-Alexander University, Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany) and Brendan Purcell (Lecturer in Philosophy, University College, Dublin, Ireland), Hitler And The Germans is a selection of lectures by the late Eric Voegelin (1901-1985), a respected scholar and articulate critic of Hitler's regime in Germany. Professor Voegelin's intelligently written books drew the Nazi state's ire and forced him to leave Austria in 1938, barely escaping arrest by the Gestapo. Voegelin's seminal study of Germany's "descent into the depths", of the reprehensible crimes against humanity brought about by the Nazi regime (and the German people's allegiance to it), as well as the political and social fallout of the post World War II era, is both scholarly and personal. Hitler And The Germans is a fascinating and sharply observed perspective which is very highly recommended for students of German National Socialism.

Professor Kershaw's book describes the social impact of and reaction to the "Hitler Myth" created by the Nazi propaganda machine. It explains what the "Hitler Myth" was and the effect the Myth had in the German society. The book discusses the rise and development of the Myth during the pre-war years. It also explores the fall and final bankruptcy of the empty Myth. Generally, it is an excellent book on German society during the Nazi Era.

The New York author of (2000) provides a guide to Hitler-related locations in Austria, Germany, France, and the U.S. The lone American site was the New York City home of a part-Irish nephew. The entry on Hitler's birthplace notes that town officials are trying to prevent its Internet commercialization. Some sources are said to be translated from the German for the first time. Includes numerous photographs. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

One can observe the conditions of austrian Anschluss with Germany based on party politics, military take overs and repressive institutions. "Hitler's Austria" reveals the values and emotions that regular Austrians felt in having there nation become the first victim or collaborator. In these these eight years of German annexation feeling were elated at arrival and wavered toward the end. It is during this time that Austria's struggle to become an independent state as well as national mentality develops separate from the regulations imposed by a truely repressive, foreign regime. Austrians despite overt collaboration with Nazis are ultimately free from major guilt. Burkey effectively portrays a continual amniguity or even paradox in Austria reconciling to its guilt as a participant in the atrocities of Anschluss, World War II, and the Holocaust. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in modern Central European history.

There is no quicker way on the road to the truth about Hitler than his own words. Maser presents the Fuehrer as he really was, through his drawings, notes, and correspondence. I am especially fond of Maser's style of presenting things as they really are, without unnecessary negative commentary as is so common in most other works about Hitler. This book is a must!

A suberb insight into the shaken mind of Hitler. As the author is a retired psychologist, as well as a former German army officer, the first hand knowledge demonstrated in this book is far superior to the run-of- the-mill works about the madness of Hitler. However, the price is somewhat higher than I, and most other book-buyers, would like to pay.

Hitlers Wien : Lehrjahre eines Diktators

This book covers the early years of hitler (not only the years in vienna). This is in my view the only book that really explains where Hitler ideas came from and how they developed. It also gives you a introduction of austrian politics at the beginning of the century and gives an insight to why the austrian empire fell apart. Hitler is not described as an deamon but as lazy, not quite untalented man with some social defects like being a complete egocentric. I suppose there a lot of persons like him running around in the streets today. What formed his political Ideas was the situation in vienna at the time. This is described perfectly. Hitler stayed with his ideas even when he was old, which makes you understand some of his fanatic views. Sadly the book ends when Hitler moves to Munich so you will not understand how Hitler became Hitler. The book is easy to read and if you've been to vienna you will enjoy it even more.

Throughout, Spielvogel succeeds in making the contemporary reader understand how the Nazis could come to power in "the land of Bach and Beethoven." This is a crucial question, not only for historians, but for every citizen of the world. As recent events in the Balkans and Africa have demonstrated, it is all too easy for the veneer of civilization to crack and expose the barbarism beneath.
I would recommend this volume to anyone with an interest in World War II, modern Europe and Germany, or the desire to be a better and more responsible human being.
