Hitler's 'Mein Kampf': an analysis
Published in Unknown Binding by Faber ()
Author: Werner Maser

Standard fare
This book in question here, the one that offers to "analyze" Mein Kampf, provides a few tid-bits of interesting information, but more often than not the work is bogged down in the banal rhetoric so commonplace within this genre. The reader of this critique is never offered up any theory or analysis that has not been heard many, many, many times before. One of the real problems with books concerning National Socialist Germany is that most forgo objectivity. Thus, we the readers, are condemned to suffer through countless pages of wishy-washy speculation and cliché post war propaganda, hoping to gleam a shred of critical truth here and there. I would only recommend this book to the serious historian, someone capable of discerning good work from re-hashed rubbish, and sound original ideas from re-worked theories. This book, unfortunately, seems to almost without exception present the latter. Only once or twice does Werner Maser come close to striking out on his own. I would highly recommend any of David Irving's books if anyone were interested in a lively, objective, well thought out critique of Mein Kampf or the Hilter "era".

Buy Agte's bio of Peiper
Fluff... Buy Peter Agte's masterpiece on Jochen Peiper instead, by far and away the best book ever written on Peiper.

Give this a miss!
This book was not the full biography I hoped. It only deals with Peiper's part in the Battle of the Bulge and the Malmedy Masacre. The details of even this are poorly researched and poorly written.

For a full biography read the outstanding 'Jochen Peiper Comander Panzerregigiment Leibstandarte' by Patrick Agte published by J. J. Fedorowicz. This contains Peiper's full, remarkable career both before WWII and in combat.

For a far more accurate, well researched and well written account of Peiper's part in the Battle of The Bulge, try 'The Devil's Adjutant' by Michael Reynolds. This also contains the most likely account of the Malmedy Masacre.

Just a popular history
This popular history of SS colonel Jochen Peiper's exploits turns out to be short on substance, as well as substantiation. Still, it reads quickly and does flesh in some of the action surrounding the old storm trooper. Not a very satisfying read for die hard history buffs (most of it is already well known) and the editing is an atrocity, but for youngsters and others unfamiliar with Peiper and his role in the Battle of the Bulge, this book will probably serve to stir some interest in the events of those days.

Adolf Hitler (World Leaders Past and Present)

Bare Basics
As a history teacher I find this book extremely juvenile and geared to the reading skills of a twelve year old. The history is there, but only superficially. If someone is looking for a quick read on Hitler and does not want to get to involved with facts and a variety of other information concerning history, then this book is for you.

A. M. Schlesinger, Jr. provides a somewhat interesting introduction to this book concerning leadership. However, his name and reputation do absolutely nothing to enhance this book. My advice, check the "ole' ENCYCLOPEDIA for it will do as good a job explaining Hitler as this book and it is a whole lot CHEAPER.

I thought that this book was terrible because its not true
I tottally disegree that hitler is a leader because he killed millions of people who were not exactly like him. Just by reading the cover before i read the book i knew it would be bad because hitler aint no leader and thats the truth.

Hitler-Leader, but thankfully not of the world.
In response to the above statement. Hitler did commit genocide, but he was a leader. He led Germany. Leaders aren't necessarily good people who do good things.

PLEASE DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS BOOK!
I've just finished reading this book and felt obliged to write this review so that others would not waste their time and money as I have. To put some perspective on this when I purchased this book I thought I was buying a book which would acknowledge the evils of Communism and Stalinism. As I began to read it however, I slowly began to realize that the author's true intent was to rehabilitate the memory of Adolph Hitler. Written in the style of a novel, Hitler plays the largest role in the book. He comes across as a thoughtful, even kindly individual who decided to kill the Jews against his morals and better judgement! This is a direct quote from the epilogue: "Adolph Hitler's bravery in facing up to the communist threat at the cost of his international reputation and his life is rarely acknowledged." Based upon the author's viewpoint, Hitler was "forced" to persecute and kill the Jews of Europe to prevent them from aiding in the Communist overthrow of Germany and Europe. One scene in the book actually has him trying to convince a Jewish inmate in Dachau to spread Stalin's crime amongst the world jewry. If only the Jews realized what they were doing, Hitler would never have ordered the Holocaust! Another scene has him confessing to a PRIEST about his doubts, and reluctance of eliminating the Jewish population of Germany! Please bear in mind that I am a STAUNCH anti-communist. To me, Communism and Nazism are interchangeable. The West is grossly overdue in acknowledging not only the horrors of Stalin, but of Communism world-wide. This does not justify however, an attempt to make Hitler a "good guy" because he "only" killed 6,000,000 and then only to fight Communism. I will go farther. Books like this do an injustice to all of the honorable men and women who fought Communism at the cost of their reputations (in the West) and their lives (in Communist countries). Liberals, Media and all Fellow Travelers love to point out examples like this as representing anti-communists of all stripes. Read "The Black Book of Communism" or anything by David Horowitz to truly understand what Communists perpetrated in the name of "Humanity and Equality". JUST DON'T READ THIS!

Garbage
Stalinbashing somehow just has got to tie in with the prattle we get in the modern age about

"victory over communism,"

whatever that is.

I have to believe it somehow relates to the decimation of a peaceful and prosperous Yugoslavia into a wasteland of migration, economic collapse, famine, economic wars and genocide.

The victory cries still echo from some pretty strange sources, to and include John Major and Bill Clinton, who should at least be getting the message by now.

GARBAGE!
This is without a doubt the most useless book written on the subject of Adolph Hitler I have ever read.first of all, this book takes the all time winner prize for objectivity with quotes like,"To some degree,he(Hitler)has already become a legendary creature, rather like Dracula or Frankenstien's Monster, the stuff of horror movies or comedies."There is a small chaptercalled Hitler ln combat that starts of with,"What a tantilizing vision-Hitler killed in the first world war.Unfortunately,he not only survived the fighting,he thrived on it."with questionable information because of subjective, and lack of usefullness, this book will never be taken seriously by even an ametuer historian,as it is more a joke book for entertainment.Don't waist your money.

Look elsewhere
If you are looking for a piece of work that breaks new ground, takes a fresh look at the political intricacies of National Socialism, examines the cultural roots of Nazi philosophy or examines the personalities of the Third Reich...this book is not for you! John Laffin has written (or should I say re-written) a piece of work that is both mundane and utterly unoriginal. It's amazing that Brassey's, the publishing house that released "Hitler Warned Us" let this one slip out the door. Brassey's is a small publishing house, but they are usually known for their quality work. The aim of "Hitler Warned Us" is to expose, through quotes and clever historical footnotes, the fact that the Nazis laid out their global plan of conquest for the whole world to see years before WWII started. Presumably pre-war Europe should not have been surprised in 1939 when Hitler dragged the world into war...but the scary part is, they were. The problem: this subject matter has been explored before. Exhaustive amounts of serious research have been done trying to discover exactly why and how the rest of the West could have made such a grave, unforgivable blunder. John Laffin does not even bother to hypothesize a reason in "Hitler Warned Us". Instead we are left with an endless string of quotes from Mein Kampf and an assortment of photographs of top nazis that surely the average WWII historical reader has seen many, many times before. What little research and writing the author did put into the book is an absolute re-hash of EVERYTHING you've ever read concerning this subject matter. Reading this book was an exercise in tedium.

This book was particularly disturbing to me (hence my long review) because it really degrades and cheapens the subject matter. This book has the look and feel of something thrown onto the market to capitalize on the genre. The book clocks in at 160 pages, and with the large text and multitude of pictures, you'll walk away feeling like you've read nothing at all. It's almost insulting.

Amazon offers quite a bit of other books on this subject matter that are worth looking into. Most notably by authors like Eleanor H. Ayer, Paul Madden, David Irving, etc.

Nazism and the common man : essays in German history (1929-1939)

Not Up to Scholarly Standards
This book seems like someting written by ninth graders for a "history day" project. The writing is awful, the political analysis seems like it came from military intelligence or the CIA, and the title is absurd; most of the people talked about in the book seem to be outcasts from society and oddballs, not "common men." And why is there nothing about women? Mitchell and his assistants never confront the Marxist analysis of Nazism, either because they don't know it or are afraid to tackle it. Why did the German capitalists and landowners finance Hitler? We won't find the answer to this question from Nazism and the Common Man. Skip this book; its analysis rarely rises above the comic book level or that of a 1950's television show.
