Isozaki, Libeskind, Rossi & Johnson Build in 1997
The second in the series of Bauwelt Berlin Annuals. This book contains the building events which shaped 1997 in Berlin. I use all the Bauwelt books regularly because they are so thorough in their presentation. Plans, sections, construction site photos and interviews or perspectives from the everyday man that humanize the otherwise mechanical process of construction. I look at different projects each time I open the book. The major projects in this book POTSDAMER PLATZ (Renzo Piano, Arata Isozaki), Daniel Libeskind's Jewish Museum (<--There is also a whole comprehensive book on this building), Foster's Reichstag, Aldo Rossi's Housing, The Phillip Johnson House, SPITTELMARKT, Hotel Adlon (Patzschke, Klotz und Partner, AIC, Ezra Attia and AD Living Design), The "New Suburbs" of Franzoesisch-Buchholz, Neu-Karow, Aalemannufer, Staaken, Rudower Felder and Altglienicke. Don't miss the timeline in the back for the day to day feel of Berlin, and the comprehensive list of new buildings in the second half of the book.

A Gorgeous Book!
This is a very lovely little book. It has no words, only beautifully-painted pictures. The little mouse scampers over a blank book and carefully chews away at the page, revealing the ocean underneath. He proceeds to make a little paper boat with the page and sails away to adventures on the high seas.

This is really a unique children's book! My kids love it!!!
Thank you so much for writing this book! My kids love the illustrations and the story. It is such an inspiring story, filled with hope for the kids, and good lessons too! Even us adults can benefit! I also really enjoyed reading about the family that wrote and illustrated the book. What a story! I'm so glad that they were inspired to complete the book, and I hope that many families and children can get a copy to spread the good word, and to fill their minds with good things!...

One of the First, and Still the Best, Bio on Bruce Lee
This Bio on Bruce Lee by Felix Dennis and Don Atyeo is still the standard by which I measure the other biographies on this martial arts legend. This book takes the generally accepted chronilogical format in detailing Bruce's life and death. It provides enough information on his life and death without resorting to too many rumors. Although it sticks to the facts, it is not boring.

It tells the story of his martial learnings and romance with Linda Lee without becoming vouyeristic. It strikes the right amount of balance of what a "fan" should know. This may be due to the time it was written, so shortly after his death that many things were not yet known or for the simple fact that these writers had some integrity and avoided endless silly sketches on his life.

The book is also an easy read (I have had this book since 9). The photos are now old, but are mixed well in the book and a few I have not seen in other materials. This is a classic text, and a must for Bruce Lee fans.

A staple in our lab
As of early 2003, it is still the most-used reference in our cytogenetics lab when we analyze bone marrow or tumor samples. We can use it for guidance as we begin analyzing a sample and once we find abnormalities, we can learn what genes are likely at work. I truly hope there is a revised edition in the works!

Casework Relationship
Published in Paperback by Loyola Pr (1957)
Author: Felix P. Biestek

Collectible price: $135.00

A History and Dynamic Exploration of Social Casework
In Biestek's view, "the relationship is the soul of social casework (p. v)." He described casework relationships as both pervasive and elusive, thereby dismissing opportunities for their explanation or definition (p. vi). However, as in other sciences, social work both desires and requires some kind of quanitification or, in the least, observable explanation.

The book, then, is based on the premise that "there is a real value for a professional social worker in being able to explain, define, and analyze the casework relationship. A well-defined terminology is one of the indispensable conditions for the growth of a profession. And even though a verbal explanation cannot adequately convey the full human overtones in a good casework relationship, it can perform a useful function as long as its inadequacy is recognized" (p. vi).

"The purpose of this book is to explain, define, and analyze the casework relationship as a whole and in its parts" (p. vii). To this end, it examines: (1) The essence of the casework relationship; (2) And, the principles of the casework relationship, which include: (a) individualization; (b) purposeful expression of feeling; (c) controlled emotional involvement; (d) acceptance; (e) the nonjudgmental attitude; (f) client self-determination; (g) and confidentiality.

The treatise is practical, thorough, clear, and concisely articulate in its content. Felix P. Biestek, S.J., who wrote the book in 1957 while on faculty at Loyola University's School of Social Work, treated only the concepts which were and still are considered the basic and essential building blocks of the profession, thereby creating a work that defies its seeming expiration. The book stands as a lasting contribution to the social sciences.

consider it a gift
anti-oedipus is one bear of a book. i have wrestled with it numerous times, only to repeatedly concede defeat somewhere around page one fifty. it was about then that i would realize i was in over my head, my knowledge of lacan and klein (and even freud to some extent) too narrow to be able to grasp its deeper significance. for one must have a sound knowledge of psychoanalysis to understand why the oedipus is something that merits a good fight. nevertheless, this book continued to fascinate, with its staggering range of knowledge and peculiar prose style calling me back time and again over the past few years. i could not leave a bookstore without passing a few moments away in the philosophy section, in hopes of finding something to assist in my study. i made an attempt with brian massumi's "a user's guide," but was left a little disappointed, finding it to be almost as difficult as anti-oedipus itself. thankfully, eugene holland's "an introduction" has proved a perfect fit. he has performed a great service to readers such as myself (i know that you're out there, somewhere) by walking one through step by step, with brief interludes explicating those thinkers who influenced the writing of anti-oedipus (such as spinoza and bataille), and illustrating each of it key concepts in relation to the revolutionary praxis it demands. he is the consumate teacher here, demanding but patient. for these are difficult ideas for the uninitiated, but with persistance this book should open up the thinking of deleuze and guatarri for any thoughtful reader. now that i have read it, i am looking forward to giving massumi's book another try, as well as another go around with the bear itself.

thank you mr. holland for this great gift.
