The Land of Frankincense
Present day Yemen conceals one of the most enigmatic ancient cultures; the land of Sheba, or Arabia Felix, whence (supposedly) came the Great Queen who visited Solomon, and (more historically) the great spices of the Orient, including cinnamon and Frankincense. The wealth of Arabia Felix owed itself to the highly sophisticated irrigation systems that captured and channeled the flash-floods that periodically pouring down the mountain-sides. This was a remarkable people who built cities on the cliff-faces, commanded huge caravan fleets, monopolized the spice trade and commuted across the Indian Ocean. They evaded BOTH the Alexandrian and the Roman conquests. For all whose imagination is captured by ancient, brilliant civilizations, this is pure escapism.

Awakened China: The Country Americans Don't Know

Very good book. Different views on China.
"Awakened China" is a well written first-hand account of China in the pre-1960 era. Greene visits several places around the county and offeres a very optimistic outlook about a country that is (and more so, was) misunderstood by Americans.

Bambi Review
Bambi was about a young prince named Bambi,a deer, and his life avoiding man. Bambi is a delicious book. A true classic. Generation after generation will certainly love it like I did. You won't be able to put it down. I liked the book because, I enjoy hunting, so it was kinda cool to read about animals. The reason i gave it four stars was because I disliked the book a little. I disliked the book because it wasn't like the movie, and it made my fellow hunters look bad.

Estonian language textbook review
I borrowed this book to learn the rudiments of the Estonian language to prepare for a trip to Estonia. This is a college textbook, and it is very thorough. Each unit divided into (1) basic sentences in Estonian (with English translations), (2) notes on grammar, (3) exercises with answers, and (4) conversations. The back of the textbook has an excellent glossary (dictionary). In the preface, the author says "[T]he availability of a native speaker of Estonian for covering the material....would be especially important at the initial stage of study, for going over the pronunciation exercises and the first units." For self-study, this book is rough going. There are no maps of Estonia, no photos, and no charts or tables; the book consists of only typewritten pages. There are also no accompanying cassettes for practice. The glossary in the back of the book lists the Estonian words with the English translation. A suggested improvement: have a second section where the English words are listed with Estonian translations (a "reverse-glossary"). This text is an excellent resource for the serious student of the Estonian language. It is an excellent textbook for a language course with an instructor, but, in my opinion, less useful for the self-learner (like myself).

Beethoven as Schindler Knew Him
Schindler met Beethoven in 1814, when Beethoven was 44 and the author was an impressionable 19 year old. Schindler became an almost constant companion of the composer, and was witness to a number of fascinating occurrences that no other biographer, such as Ries, had access to. Schindler gives us examples of Beethoven's strongly emotional nature, in such a way that I felt I could have recognized the composer should I have passed by him on abusy street. Inclusion of this information is what made this biography most appealing to me. One of my favourite sections is an appendix entitled "Beethoven's Daily Routine" which describes, among other things, how Beethoven would count out 60 beans for his cup of coffee.

However, Schindler is not a transparent witness. Rather, he feels compelled to "protect" Beethoven from "his many enemies", for whom there is no historical basis. A sense of Schindler acting as guardian comes through strongly in the writing. The most striking example of this attitude is Schindler's description of the meeting between Beethoven and Rossini, a meeting which historically never took place!

Fortunately, this excellent Dover edition is thoroughly annotated - there are as many editor's notes as there are pages in the text! I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in reading a contemporary account of the life of the great composer, and who would enjoy witnessing the profound effect that he had on at least one of his associates.

Birth of the Cool?
Miles Davis gave us "Birth of the cool" at the time of the 'triumph of American painting', but the connection to 'cool' becomes stretched beyond this timely coincidence. The name of Miles Davis is the greatest presence of black art in a book about visual art not music. The title sounds good, the art inside is arguably among the best of this century, and the discussion within the interviews is engaging - but it is difficult to connect them to "Cool". And the picture of Andy Warhol with Miles Davis doesn't help. Yes, it is "cool" that most of my favorite artists are represented within these covers, but I don't think that was the point. But don't let the awkward title dissuade you. The artists collected for the text do represent the greatness of individuals, not movements or styles, in the 20th century. These individuals represent an emergence of a new "individualist" movement in this century. The author is on to something but it is not yet cool enough to be Jello. Oldsters such as Pollock, O'Keefe, and Newman and the persistent such as Celmins, Katz, and Morley are combined with artists such as Prince, Taaffe, Williams and Wool who were born years after Miles' cool album was cut. But they all belong together because of their uniqueness, specific individual focus and inquisitiveness. Each is at the head of individual directions that may become movements some day. Their work is beautiful and thoughtful, and in some cases a spiced with a bit of mischief. Cool? Hot? Within the interviews, even the artists themselves cannot come to an agreement about that. But the book is cool because it does contain words and images from 15 of the hottest individual contributors to the latest directions art has taken in the 20th century.

Excellent Work!
This is just another glimpst at the leaps of thought made by this brilliant thinker, far too often neglected by his friend and often co-author Gilles Deleuze. As usual with Guattari, this is a very challenging read. I do not think he was the best of writers. It does not flow very well and at points you'd wish he gave an extensive glossary or something along those lines, but overall, for sheer theoretical value this book is invaluable for anyone interested in the philosophy of Deleuze & Guattari.
