The children of Northern Ireland building a peaceful future
"Children of Northern Ireland" is part of "The World's Children" series which uses photographs of smiling children to "lure young readers into learning a good deal about the history, geography, and cultures of countries of hte world." In this book written by Michael Elsohn Ross with photographs by Felix Rigau, young readers will meet the children of Northern Ireland, a country that has seen its share of troubles. In fact, this book deals with "the troubles" up front, explaining the history of the land that came to be part of the United Kingdom rather than a united Ireland. The photographs show kids playing rugby, doing Irish dances, and sailing mineature yachts, while the text talks about the agriculture, industry and customs of the land. Many of the photographs show the children in the lush green Irish countryside and there are some beautiful pictures of ruins on Devenish Island. A constant theme of the book is to highlight examples of Protestant and Catholic children playing together and refusing to continue the cycle of violence. Young readers will get a sense for the beauty of Ireland and how the culture is different from their own, but they will also understand that things are quite different for children their own ages who live in Northern Ireland. Other books in this series look at children from Vietnam, Guatemala and the Tlingit as well as the grandchildren of the Lakota.

At the sources of modern geography
Azara's book is still the most important description for the area of the governments of Buenos Aires and AsunciĆ²n at the end of the XVIII century. Azara was a member of the boundaries expedition that followed the San Ildefonso treaty, whose explorations were a complement to those, much more well known and publicized, done by Von Humboldt in the NW area of the spanish colonies in about the same period. The southern explorations were by no means less relevant, but no funds were available for a publication of the results so comprehensive as that by V.H., so this book is the main source for that venture. Azara describes the history, geography, plants, animals, indian tribes of the area. His geographic measurements and maps are remarkably accurate. He was called back to Spain in 1801.

The Felix Frankfurter Papers
This collect of papers written by Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter is a great literary publication. It shows Frankfurter's great writting ablity and his great quality as a writer. The papers include many of his thoughts on life in general. Also this collection is includes his decisions that he made as a Supreme Court Justice when he served from 1939 to 1962, when he retired. Right now Frankfurter is dead, but through this, one of his many publications, his great collection, The Felix Frankfurter Papers, he will be remembered for many generations to come.

Felix S. Cohen's Handbook of Federal Indian Law
Published in Hardcover by Lexis Law Pub (1982)
Author: Felix S Cohen
Amazon base price: $90.00
Average review score:

The Indian Law Classic
This is the classic in Indian Law. This edition (1982) is a thoroughgoing revision of Cohen's original 1942 edition, which updates some topics and deletes others; however, it also eliminates some of the discursive sections in the original. The main problem is that it's 20 years out of date at this point, and so leaves out current developments in case law and statute. Nevertheless, it's a valuable overview of the subject, and is a great starting point for your research in most areas of federal Indian Law.

The beautifully buried Abu Simbel - Ramese of Egypt
It is an image collection of Egypt, taken by the French master Felix Teynard during 1851-52. The magnificent views of ancient monuments, architecture and landscape further reveals the unconsicous passage of time. These images were first published in Paris in 1958. One remarkable image is the Abu Simbel, which clearly showed the rightmost statue of Ramese still paritally buried under sand. Initially I found the picture of Abu Simbel (page 97) from 'Black & White' photography magazine, which is taken from the sand slope. I was deeply impressed and attracted by the beautiful portrait of the Ramese statue, the special angle that enforce the mystery of this ancient monument. And then I discovered this book 'Calotypes of Egypt' from a bookstore when I travelled to Cairo of Egypt in 2000.

A very good survey of Rousseau's art
The layout and color reproductions are quite good, considering the book's modest size. Werner Schmalenbach comments on the artist's charming paintings, their historical background and influence on comtemporaries, as well as key events in his life. The text is illuminating, lively, and unpedantic-- as Rousseau would have liked it. Also, the price is right. .... Get it! (Even though the book is out of print, I have seen several copies in art museum shops.)

Congratulations to Prestel, the publisher, for making Pegasus Library books available to the wide public-- great art books which are kind to the wallet.

London As It Might Have Been

An Eiffel Tower in Wembley Park?
A book for a rather specific audience. If you are very interested in London (living there would count) and architectural/city planning oddities, this is the book for you. There are whole chapters about how best to rebuild the city after the Great Fire of 1666, alternative monuments to Nelson and other famous British heroes, and (my favorite) an ambitious man's attempt to outdo Paris with a tower better than Eiffel's. The book is full of architect's drawings and sketches (black and white only), all by the original planner or others from the period. This book is very hard to rate on a 1-10 scale because it's either something you are really interested in, or it's incredible boring. I gave it a seven, because the authors came up with a unique subject and cover it with as much interest and detail as is possible. However, you have to be VERY interested in the subject. As an non-architect American who is fascinated with the U.K. and has done my fair share of reading about Victorian (and before) design, but has only visited London once, I was lost at many points. The book has endless references to various concepts of how St. Paul's cathedral might have been or how it could have been improved, but it makes the assumption that the reader is intimately familiar with its current appearance. There are no comparisons with its present form, just the alternatives. And the architectural drawings and discussions about the placements of buildings were sometimes too much for me. I bought it hoping for a leisurely read about grand schemes for London filled with humorous stories about the failed plans for a "railway down the middle of the Thames" (as indicated on the back cover), and got more detail and specifics than I expected. However, if you are a Londoner (and I would welcome your second, much more authoritative, opinion), historical architect, or other interested someone who isn't put off by the above warnings, this is the best (if not only) book on the topic.

Lord, have Murphy!

If anything can go wrong, it will (Murphy's Law at work).
Is Murphy's Law correct, or are things really going according to plan? This book uses humor to reveal God's hand at work in the complications we confront in everyday life. Some examples in this book: Nothing is ever as simple as it first seems, everything you decide to do costs more than the first estimate, every activity takes more time than you have, it's easier to make a committment or to get involved in something that it is to get out of it, whatever you set out to do, something else must be done first, if you improve or tinker with something long enough, eventually it will break, by making something absolutely clear, somebody will be confused, you can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, etc.. I really liked the approach to murphy's law by understanding that God is in control and does have a plan. This is a book that should be required reading for everyone!
