An Exhaustive Collection of Public Personnel Issues
I recently read this book for a Ph.D. course, I found it to be quite exhaustive in coverage. From the beginnings of the public sector and the issues of spoils and patronage to the current issues of pay for performance, sexual harrassment and current public work trends, this book covers a great deal of subjects. Perhaps the most notable is the writers' ability to combine historical personnel issues with relative theories to argue current problems and situations. The second full reading really helped to clarify the book's thoughtful issues.

very intriguing collection of poetry and watercolor
casey l. b. kwang has composed (written is not a good enough word)a wonderful work of art in On Blue Felix Paper. He tells of his eternal predicament as an orphan (both literary and metaphorical) and of his unjustifiable but inescapable resort to the contemporary drug subculture and travels from apathy to sensitivity and back. The poems are refreshingly devoid of pathos, but he injects feeling into his observation, most poignantly with the recurrent theme of finding home in the world. The poems are very easy to read, but will leave you thinking about them afterwards. He manages a great deal of lyrical complexity in a few simple words and images. You can feel his poetry in his artwork as well, which is similarly intriguing and tangible, yet representative of the larger intangible emotions that afflict human vulnerability.

Great German Romantics
Mention the word "romantic" to an organist and their mind instantly turns to France and composers like Widor and Franck. It's really a pity that German romantics get shortchanged in the modern repertoire.
Dover's rugged edition presents all of Brahms' works for organ, Mendelssohn's six Sonatas and three Preludes and Fugues, and Schumann's six Fugues on B-A-C-H. These pieces are readily playable on almost any instrument and are enjoyable to play. This book will make a great addition to any organist's library.

Good Example of the Hell Prison inflicts on families
Lourdes is the wife of a Chicago Street Gang member who is serving a lengthy prison term for murder. She makes no apologies for him, and has great insight to how she ended up married to him.
The heart of the book is her description of the pain she and her family experienced after he was convicted. The long trips to prison, the attempt to maintain a long distance relationship, the prison's unannounced, arbitrary transfers of her husband thousands of miles away. Through it all, both Lourdes and her husband determined not to give in to the madness, but to work to reform this arbitrary prison system--he from the inside, her by organizing other family members.
This choice caused both some pain. But it seems to allowed both to survive an extremely difficult situation with their personal dignity intact. An inspiring book.

A Fantastic Folktale
"Paco and the Witch" is bright and entertaining. The Puerto Rican folktale captures the imagination of children in the same way that "Hansel and Gretel" and "Rumplestiltin" do, but Felix Pitre gives brings out the island's rich personality in the tale along with Christy Hale's bold and energentic pictures. The book is a winner and should be enjoyed by all!

Charming picture book for children 3 and up
This charming picture book (no text) depicts the dilemma of a little mouse trapped in a book and his ingenious solution. The illustrations are lovely. My older children love to return to this book, even though they are readers now.

History of the Cold Fusion of the Late Sixties
Felix Franks recounts the story of one of the more embarrassing fallacies of established science: polywater. During the sixties, some Russian scientists found experimental evidence of what they assumed to be long range order in specially prepared samples of water. Scientist in the west were not to be outdone (their interest perhaps fueled by the ongoing cold war), and soon similar research was a hot topic in Europe and USA. The term polywater was coined for this 'polymerized' form of water, and some spectacular claims were made concerning its properties, which even reached ordinary media. Franks follows this development, and also what happens in the next step when the fad dies out after being discredited by more thorough investigations. The story is of interest to scientist of all fields and people interested in the scientific method as an example of how science can go astray. The subject matter makes it particularly amusing for physical/inorganic chemists.

The best kids' book on the topic I've found
I liked this book for its straightforward language and friendly graphics. It is jam-packed with fun facts and easy activities that illustrate major concepts in earth science. I don't agree with the age range stated... The back of the book says ages 8 to 12, and I think this is more appropriate. I intend to use this book as a more interesting text for a sixth-grade lesson that I will be teaching on plate tectonics and vulcanology.
