A must read on faith
Awesome! If you desire to know more of God and to build up your faith using the Word of God, this book is for you. It is easy to read and broken up into individual lessons with review questions after each section. I was uplifted and encouraged by each and every page. I highly recommend this book especially if you are believing God for something. It is really encouraging and helpful.

Bible Faith Study Course
An incredible book, engrossing, entertaining, and inspiring; one that is very difficult to put down. I bought my copy nearly twenty years ago. I have read it many times and I am still reading it. Without exaggerating, and apart from the Bible itself, I doubt if there is any other book that makes the subject of faith so clear, so real, and so practical. It is also a delight to read; Brother Hagin teaches serious spiritual stuff with humor and grace. Whatever your needs are, and whatever you are believing God for, whether for healing, annointing, prosperity, success in life and ministry, this is the book to read. Rev. Hagin shows there is nothing "mysterious" "unknowable", "unfathomable" about faith. Here is faith made simple. The entire book is based on two verses of the scripture: Mark 11:23-24. These two verses are also the cornerstone of the Kenneth Hagin Ministries. This is not a theory book; it is a testimonial to over fifty years of faith ministry that has brought salvation, healings and deliverances from all kinds of sicknesses and bondages to countless numbers of people all over the world. If you still have any doubt that Jesus still heals and delivers today just as he did in Bible days 2000 years ago, go and get this book, and do not drop it until you finish it, many times. If you are a child of God, walking diligently in the light of God's word, healing and the miraculous life belong to you too; don't let the enemy cheat you of your birthright. If you understand and follow all the principles enunciated in this book, you will wake up one morning and discover that whatever the impossible problem, or incurable sickness that you are dealing with has simply disappeared to be seen no more forever. I have tried it; it has worked for me again and again.

Best study on Biblical Faith you can find
Excellent stuff! You have to go a long way to find better than this (if that is at all possible!). This is a very clear and easy to understand study of the true Bible kind of Faith that really brings results. Kenneth Hagin is one of those guys who takes the word and just explains it so clearly. In this book he starts with the basics and goes right through all the nooks and crannies and puts the power of faith within your hand. He has excellent examples which he draws from 50 years of hands on ministry and his life has proven that the Bible based Faith he teaches is for today, for us and that it works!!!

Thoughtful and Exciting
I picked up this book because I thought the cover was so beautiful. Now I'm in the middle of it and I am completely riveted. There are so many levels to the characters and to the story - that makes for a great read. I'm already buying it for friends.

Evocative period piece
The literature of post-war Japan is relatively unknown in the U.S. with the exception of Kawabata and Mishima. This book is really a fine example from those years, and both it and its author deserve to be better known. The pace of the writing is unhurried, self-assured, and the sense of time, and place, is breathtaking. The setting is a Buddhist temple in a small town, and the illicit relationship between the priest and his domineering mother-in-law. By the time you finish reading it, you feel you know the people and the town like an insider. I feel like I can see the temple and feel the hush enclosed by its wooden floors and halls. If you've ever been to Japan and visited a temple, you'll recognize the feeling, and this book captures it as well as any I know.

an amazing rollercoaster of scandal and intrigue
This is an amazing book, set in a peaceful temple in rural japan this book surprises and delights as the reader is drawn into the torment of guilt the priest of the temple suffers because of his illicit relationship with his mother-in-law.

A Parent's Handbook of Understanding...
As a school counselor and a parent of an "almost 13!" year old, I have read virtually every books written about raising children, but few offer the step by step guidance and support that, "But I'm Almost 13!" offers. This is a book you will read several times, and highlighted and dogeared it should remain at your fingertips as a reference tool before and during the adolescent years. While driving home the point that parenting cannot begin when your child reaches pre-adolescence, Ginsburg helps us to see the importance of the parent-child relationship. He points out that it is only by understanding how children think that we can understand their behaviors and effect positive change. This book gives parents the knowledge and tools necessary to be prepared for their child's adolescence and the confidence to meet this challenging time with joy, optimism and pride.

Developmentally on target, prevention at it's finest
"But I'm Almost 13!" is a marvelous, logical, and compassionate flow of expertise for parents who are about to dance the dance of adolescence. Theory is delicately woven into a masterplan for parental and pre-adolescent growth. Achieving an understanding of the "vital ingredients" and mastering the techniques of "choreographed discussions", "modeling", and "decision trees", parents will greatly reduce universal worries and agony often experienced during these challenging times. All who read, apply, reread, and reapply, will happily achieve Dr. Ginsburg's "cognitive Ah-Ha" discovering a higher degree of parental self-efficacy while enhancing their preteens and teens ability to successfully churn through the abstract mazes ahead. Having parented two adolescents, and provided parent training for many so desperately searching for guidance, this invaluable resource offers the insights, skills and reassurance we all seek. The trick is to apply it early and often. Enjoy!

Every parent of a preadolescent child should read this!!!
I have been a pediatric nurse for over 20 years. Currently, I am a School Nurse in an upper elementary school where I care for 1100 5th and 6th grade students. I am writing a review of Dr. Ginsburg's book in our school newspaper and will encourage every parent to purchase this excellent book. Dr. Ginsburg's book is filled with practical tips to help the preadolescent navigate throughout the potentially perilous teenage years. The book teaches skills that parents can utilize in order to help their preteens gain strategies which will ultimately (hopefully) keep them safe and drug free, yet prepare them for the eventual separation that occurs as children grow into adults. Real life examples from an expert in the field of adolescent medicine suggest specific actions that parents can take in order to help their childen. This is, without a doubt, the most helpful, insightful parenting book that I have read. It is a "must" read for everyone with preteens!!

A must have! Orthodox, accurate, helpful and fun too!
WARNING! ONCE YOU START READING FATHER JOHN AND FATHER KEN'S BOOK YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO STOP!!!!
This book is essential for ALL Catholics and for anyone who wants to learn more about Catholicism. Next to THE Bible, this will be considered the "bible" for anyone who has a question about the history, doctrine, dogma and practice of the Catholic faith. It is well written in clear, concise and "readable" language. "Catholicism For Dummies" is an excellent learning tool, as well as a super reference and research source.
This book will make excellent gifts for your family members and friends, Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Buy extra copies at Amazon.com ...
For Catholics, here's another chance to spread God's word as we are called to do, and an opportunity to draw in those who are curious, but hesitant to take the next step towards conversion to Catholicism. For non-Catholics, you will not find a better book to learn the basics and much more about our faith. Go ahead, jump on this one! You will not regret purchasing this awesome book!

Reliable and Easy-to-Comprehend Catholic Info
Catholic teaching in a mass-appeal format, "Catholicism For Dummies" is an easy-to-understand, nuts-and-bolts guide to what's really Catholicism. (See the Imprimatur in the front pages.) Authors Fr. John Trigilio Jr. and Fr. Ken Brighenti know their subject matter inside and out and backwards, offering clear, understandable, and down-to-earth explanations of complex Catholic belief. Fr. Trigilio and Fr. Brighenti explain the logic behind the Catholic veneration of Mary and the saints, for example, and readers can enjoy the careful reasoning behind Catholic doctrine. This book is a real eye opener -- not just for readers who may know nothing about being Catholic, but for many devout Catholics who are still fuzzy and misled on any number of Catholic-specific terms and concepts, i.e. the redemptive nature of suffering, the communion of saints, the five proofs of St. Thomas Aquinas, the magisterium, infallibility, papal election, natural family planning, the Real Presence, exorcism, excommunication, annulments, canon law, natural moral law, the canonization process, and convalidation ceremonies, as well as some of the more newsy issues, i.e. the Church's viewpoint on the death penalty and war, why women can't be priests, and why abortion is wrong. This title is a MUST for anyone interested in becoming Catholic, as well as Catholics in general.

Unfortunately, much misinformation is out there in print regarding the Catholic faith, and even the right information is sometimes difficult to understand for Catholics, much less non-Catholics. So, too, studious Catholics may have read a number of books by Catholic authors, i.e. St. Augustine, Chesterton, Fr. Bernard Groeschel, St. Theresa of Avila, yet they still don't have a complete handle on some of the basics, but "Catholicism For Dummies" fills in all the blanks and casts away the falsehoods.

This book should find a place in every Catholic home and in every high-school senior and college freshman catechism class.

Necessary Reading on Both Sides of the Fence
As a retired college professor and as a former Director of a Pontifical Center for Catechetical Studies, I fully endorse and highly recommend this book to both non-Catholic and Catholic alike. Long ago in the seminary, we referred to a few indispensable books as VADEMECUMS, from the Latin "vade" (to take) "cum" (with). In other words, a 'vademecum' was any book which you wanted and needed to "take with you" wherever you went since it was so helpful. "Catholicism for Dummies" can and will be a vademecum as many people who read this will hopefully dispel erroneous ideas, prejudices, false conclusions, myths, fears, lies, and misinformation on Catholicism yet prolific in our time.

While dispelling the wrong data, "Catholicsim for Dummies" also presents the true and authentic beliefs, practices, prayer & spirituality as well as moral and institutional dimensions to this ancient, worldwide Christian religion. It is a wonderful introduction to the Catechism of the Catholic Church and it acquaints the non-Catholic with a one BILLION plus member church while reaquainting the Catholic to his/her roots and heriage.

Civitas to Kingdom: British Political Continuity 300-800
Published in Paperback by Cassell Academic (1999)
Author: Kenneth R. Dark
Amazon base price: $37.95
Average review score:

Excellent reading on "sub-Roman" Britain.
This is an overview of archæological and textual record of Britain during this poorly understood period. Its premise on the origins of the sub-Roman kingdoms of Britain is that prior to the official withdrawal of the Legions in 410, the primarily pagan secular elite of the British provinces were replaced by a Christian administration of low status origins. After the failure of Constantine III to gain the purple, this administration adopted native British power structures based on kingship. This theory can be used to successfully explain the decline of the villas, the rise of Christian ecclesiastics (based on Martinian militancy), and the introduction of pagan mercenaries who eventually created the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms in the East. The work is notable for its careful inclusion of Britain in the context of the wider remnants of the Western Empire. Better attested events and evidence from Gaul, Spain, Italy, and North Africa are used to explain what occurred in Britain. This is a great read and arguably a part of the basic body of current knowledge and synthesis regarding the Dark Ages in Britain.

Friends (Cymry) and Romans.....
In the forward to CIVITAS TO KINGDOM, N.P. Brooks of the University of Birmingham suggests that K.R. Dark's new book may give the phrase "The Dark Ages" a new meaning. Using information from historical, archeological, and other sources available in the early 1990s, Dark has constructed a new interpretation of Britain in the years between 410 A.D. when the Roman Empire sent an official letter stating it could no longer defend the Britannia, and the germanization of most of Britannia by the Anglo-Saxons in the 800s.

Dark's study covers the provinces not immediatly subdued by the Angle and Saxon mercenaries the Romans hired to "protect" Britannia before 400 A.D. Non-Anglo-Saxon Britain included the nothern and central areas of the island, plus Cornwall and Wales. Dark says the inhabitants of this area maintained an 'Antique Roman Society' which combined political, economic and other aspects of pre-Roman and Roman eras.

Dark has assembled an enormous amount of information gleaned from recent historical studies (text anayses) and archeological studies as well as other sources. He asks, "What is Roman". After he lists and defines the characteristics most scholars agree are "Roman" he shows how material evidence supports the notion that the Roman Britannia survived what has been described as a barbaric Celtic era. One the other hand, he says, "the polities of Britain, tribes, civitates, or kingdoms, remained stable from the Pre-Roman Iron-Age to the sub-Roman period....the general picture is of overall continuity but not a static system...the conventional picture of the fifth-to-seventh-century 'Celtic West' as a reversion to Iron-Age cultural and political organization is mistaken."

This is an excellent book, quite readable, and loaded with footnotes for those who wish to go further.

"Change versus Continuity"
Most of us know, on some intellectual level, that change and continuity are both simultaneous processes. There is no period in all of history where one is entirely absent, though there are many times when one takes precedence over the other. Without a doubt, the post-Roman (often called, somewhat decievingly, the "sub-Roman") period was one such period for the British Isles. The dominant religion changed from pagan to Christian, Pictland became Scotland, Britain became England, and the Britons became Welsh or Breton or Cornish. The Roman Empire fell, and independent British kingdoms sprang up, only to be washed away in the tide of Anglo-Saxon invasion within a century or two. From 400 CE to 600 CE, in the space of a short 200 years, the makeup of the country changed almost completely.

With all this going on, it's easy to forget that there was a great deal of continuity here, as well. Kenneth Dark, in this excellent scholarly tour de force, reminds us of that little fact. He argues that the political structure of post-Roman Britain was made up of Roman civitates (cities--used as the basic unit of administration by the Roman Empire, almost like a state in the US) which, with the end of Roman authority, elevated themselves to the status of kingdoms. These civitates were themselves based on the Celtic tribes that the Romans had conquered centuries before--rather than take time and energy to create a new aristocracy (which would no doubt even further alienate the newly conquered Britons), they simply adopted the old tribal aristocracy as imperial apparatus, like so many other hegemonic empires. Kenneth Dark shows the survival of Roman traditions and culture through the "Dark Ages," and points out that many of the traits we think of as a "reversion to native Celtic customs" may, in fact, have been the natural trajectory of the way Roman culture was heading in Late Antiquity.

Though Kenneth Dark may overstate his case, it is a case that perhaps needs to be overstated. The study of post-Roman Britain, I think, has lost its equilibrium in the "Change versus Continuity" debate, making this book a valuable counter-weight. I heartily recommend it to anyone interested in that murky historical gloss from the end of Roman rule, to the beginning of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms.

Anesthesia from A to Z
"Clinical Anesthesia Procedures of the Massuchussets General Hospital" offers concise yet thorough coverage on all aspects of anesthesia. From preoperative visit to basic airway management, from fluid requirements of the surgical patient to specific considerations on cardiac, respiratory and liver diseases, this book has it all in an easily accesible way, especially when your above the "blood-brain barrier". I would especially recomend the chapter on resuscitation of trauma and burns victims, because of the thorough coverage of the subject, better than in many surgical textbooks I have read.

Excellent Teaching Tool and Reference!
I have over 15 years of experience as an anesthesiologist at the prestigious Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut. I've seen it all; however, this text challenged me. I highly recommend it, and every practicing MD and CRNA should have a copy to review and use as a teaching tool and guide.

This is the only book you'll need in anesthesia!
This book encapsulates all the necessary information for clinical practice of anesthesia. It also includes MANY charts and protocols for drugs, malignant hypothermia, ACLS, etc. I can't enter the OR without it.

PATCHEN: Poet As A Falling Star.
Kenneth Patchen is a great poet and a very special case. Like all the modern English language poets born before World War I, he inherited an almost over-ripe English with roots descending deeply into two thousand years of European culture. It is the English that made such a rich medium for Pound, Eliot, Stevens, Williams, Aiken and others. But what separates Patchen clearly from almost all of his peers is that though he embraced this language, he rejected almost all the traditional forms and prosody in using it. Most of Patchen's peers recognized his astonishing poetic gift, but criticized him harshly for his rejection of traditional form. Patchen created forms spontaneously or out of his private deep reflections and as his writing developed he began to incorporate non-academic, colloquial, and even something like post-modern language into his writing as well. Patchen's rejection of traditional form was not simply a matter of temperament, though he was by nature very individualistic and scornful of conformity, even anarchistic, though highly self-disciplined; the rejection was in essence his rejection of the civilization that was still insisting on these forms. Patchen was looking for a way to break through and away from the nightmare corner that this civilization had painted itself into. He had no confidence in the culture that Eliot morned the loss of. For Patchen this culture had created its own demise and Eliot was only part of its corruption. But Patchen was later also very reserved toward the Beat poets and their
"penny-a-line vulgarity." Patchen appeared between the worlds of the early (classical-rooted) modern and the post-modern like a falling star that amazed everyone who saw it, experienced it, but no one knew what to do with the experience. By the time Patchen died the English language had become so deeply corrupted by political propaganda and commercialism that it was a minor miracle that Allen Ginsberg had been able to write Kaddish and Bob Dylan had been able write Desolation Row. The chance for Patchen having some real influence on literary culture passed before most people saw how badly he was needed. It isn't that he wasn't noticed, the star of Patchen staggered many people. He was the favorite American poet (and prose fiction writer) of Henry Miller, he was the favorite poet of jazz great Charlie Parker and blues harp master Tony Glover. For his incredible wife/muse/best friend, Miriam, he was the love poet without equal (and that may be a fact). He is my favorite American poet and I could never repay the comfort and richness he gave to my troubled youth. There are many who love Patchen deeply. The problem is that when there was opportunity to do so, America did not welcome him, to its lasting shame. Academia's reception of him, where he remains a mere footnote, is part of that shame. What happened to Patchen is similar to what happened to Herman Melville in America. (The greatest American novel, Pierre or, the Ambiguities, is still largely unrecognized.) And if any reader thinks I am exaggerating, then I challenge anyone to spend a few months with this volume, The Collected Poems Of Kenneth Patchen, and then say that they did not find some of the most beautiful and profound poems in the English language.

Poet/Artist of Many Voices
Kenneth Patchen, 1911-1972, was born in Ohio, fought in WWII, and spent the rest of his life invalided by spinal disease. His was a powerful, angry voice that could sing some of the most beautiful love poems of the past century. His art was violent and primitive; usually he incorporated poetry into his painting. His strongest influence was William Blake, e.e. cummings was a mentor. He moved easily among the San Francisco poets, a contemporary of Lawrence Ferlinghetti of the famed City Lights Book Store. He was truly a poet's poet and never compromised his art.

I don't know if was influential; he certainly didn't care. His public, his peers sought him; never the other way around. I read once that he wrote "naked poetry." The following poem is an excellent example of his wondrous way with words, the beauty, the anger and the savagery all in a few short stanzas.

The dove walks with sticky feet

Upon the green crowns of the almond tree,

Its feathers smeared over with warmth

Like honey

That drips lazily down into the shadow...

Anyone standing in that orchard,

So filled with peace and sleep,

Would hardly have noticed the hill

Nearby

With its three strange wooden arms

Lifted above a throng of motionless people

---Above the helmets of Pilate's soldiers

Flashing like silver teeth in the sun.

infinities of mad infinitudes - the crier
I am not surprised that Albion Moonlight has so many wonderful comments, but this, the Collected Poems has none. Speechlessness made by endlessness.

Patchen gave us so much, that we nothing to say.

Best of EDP in !!!
This book is excelent because there's reviews of calculus, linear algebra and all sort of classical numerical methods needed to understand the finite element method. Moreover, the authors try and succed in giving a clear explanation of many applications of the method.

Well, a must of numerical analysis that every scientific searchers and engineers must own !!!

An excellent book
Great book to learn the fundamentals of finite element methods (FEM). The authors combine both rigour and simplicity in their presentation of the FEM as a means of numerically solving a wide variety of partial differential equations. Highly recommended for engineers--especially those who have been taught FEM using the traditional "structural mechanics" approach.

Amazing
Excellent approach for numerical and computational issues. Perfect for creating solid programs that work and it also explains every detail in a great way.

Most Complete Confined Space Rescue Ext
I am the rescue team coordinator for a coastal South Carloina Fire Department. I have been searching for a complete Con Space program to teach our team members and have finally found it.

I met Alan and company about a year ago during the development of this book. They were instructing a Con space tech course. I was so pleased with the content of the course, I new we couldn't go wrong with this text.

The technical information is accurate and easy to understand. The rope and rigging techniques have provided us with another point of view and have been added to our "bag of tricks".

From an instructional point of view ALL THE MATERIALS YOU NEED ARE PROVIDED. Powerpoint, outlines...its all there!

If you are in need of a COMPLETE confined space training curriculum look no further.

Most Useful Volume on Confined Spaces
This text is perhaps the best treatise on the subject of Confined Spaces that I have ever had the opportunity to review. The authors have quite effectively provided the most comprehensive manual on this subject to have been published to date. While most authors typically address the subject of confined space entry and rescue as a chapter or maybe just a paragraph or two in some larger volume on a related subject, this particular book is dedicated to only confined space entry. This makes the text unique and quite useful. Its utility extends from the classroom to the field. The latter of which will gain the most benefit from using this text. Virtually every subject of concern associated with confined spaces is thoroughly addressed in the chapters of this book. Specifically, this text provides detailed and accurate information and guidance to those who must either supervise or work in confined spaces. It also has extensive information on work planning requirements and, of great importance, essential rescue procedures. It effectively addresses the hazards and the control measures that have been successfully implemented to either eliminate or reduce/control the risks of hazard exposure to acceptable levels. The detailed treatment on emergency response procedures is perhaps the greatest feature since this is where lives are either saved or lost in the "real world" of confined space operations. In this regard, I found this information presented here invaluable.

Finally, the CD that accompanies the book is extremely useful. It contains videos and other materials that can easily be adapted to supplement existing training programs (or even aid in the development of new programs). The hazard analysis exercises and ready-made PowerPoint presentations are top-notch and will only serve to increase the overall effectiveness of any confined space entry program at any location, worldwide.

ONE STOP RESCUE
As a Fire Chief, I am pleased to find this quality textbook on the topic of Confined Space Rescue. The book is a great one for initial rescue training, and also is great reference material for refresher programs, and anyone going into confined space rescue. The pictures and the graphics do not require a "Ricky Rescue Engineering Degree" to understand the material. I believe that procedures and style of rescue presented in the material definitely cover all applicable standards and regulations. I recommend this book, the rating of the book exceeds 5 stars.
