Published in Paperback by Lectorum Pubns (Juv) (1994)
Author: Juan Rulfo
Amazon base price: $8.95
Average review score:

Rulfo's best
Rulfo shines as a "cuentista" and I think this collection of
stories establishes him as northern Mexico's poetic voice. The desolation of Mexican life here is truly haunting yet somehow beautiful. I recommend these stories over his novel "Pedro Paramo", even though the novel is quite interesting.

beautiful sadness
I read this book in Spanish for the language, then in English for extra clarity. It is beautifully sparse, much like a black and white photograph - its surface is dark and bleak and colorless, yet the texture which can be read and felt beneath the surface is absolutely breathtaking. Rulfo creates a world I am both entranced by and afraid of.

El signo del castor

A great book with interesting sort of plot through it.
A boy named Matt is left alone in Maine Woods. His father has left him to go and get his new baby sister. The really cool things happen when a boy is left in the woods with Indians. Matt and an Indian meet and the book get really good. I think that the best thing in this book is the relationship and the way it changes. They start out as true enemies, but weird events in this story make the relationship grow. The amazing part is the reactions that Attean (the Indian) has. Also the stories he tells. This is a great book with a really great plot and very fun to read. I really enjoyed it.

A well written book.
This book is one of the best books I have ever read. Its got sadness, happiness, and most of all this book has a lot of adventure. Its about a 12 year old boy who has to live on his own in the wilderness of Maine. He meets Indians and learns there way of living.

A great architect
A very hard to find book, but worth it if you can. It documents the many of the under represented Urguayan architect's most beautiful masonry structures.

Emma Bean

Amazon base price: $13.99

It's A Keeper!
This is a beautiful book - one with a story that tugs at your heartstrings, but not in an overtly sentimental way. The illustrations are a perfect complement to the words. The language is simple and the story is not too wordy - great for little ones, preschool-aged and under. I started calling my baby girl "Emma Bean" as a nickname (her name is Emma) because of this book. I showed it to her daycare provider who then made Emma her own Emma Bean based on the book. Both the doll and the book will be treasured keepsakes.

This book is delightful for parent and child.
My daughter adores this book. She wants to make a rabbit just like Emma Bean. One read makes it an all time favorite.

Flora of the San Juans: A Field to the Mountain Plants of Southwestern Colorado
Published in Paperback by Kivaki Press (1995)
Authors: Susan Komarek and Sue Komarek
Amazon base price: $18.95
Average review score:

THE guide to Southwest Colorado Flora.
In my opinion (and possibly in fact), this is the only field guide worth using. Ms. Komarek pays explicit attention to detail, and has created wonderful keys to quickly and reliably identify whatever plant you may be viewing.

The book also lists many plants found in the lower elevations surrounding the San Juans, such as Durango, Bayfield, Pagosa, Mancos, and Cortez. If you are serious about plants in this area, or if you would simply like to identify them, this is the book that you need.

The best guide book to plants of the San Juan Mountains
I take this book everywhere I go when exploring in the San Juan Mountains of Southwestern Colorado. It is well organized and comprehensive, with excellent illustrations.

Garbo

Facts you never knew
Not many people know the story of this great Spanish counter-spy during WWII. He excelled at his work for both the British and German governments (he was awarded commendations from both sides!). Long thought to be dead along time ago (this book was written in the 70s), this story tells of his great feats of deception and details his plans to keep the Germans confused about the Normandy invasion - no doubt his counter-intelligence high-point.

Correction to authorship of Garbo
The book is about Juan Pujol the WWII English spy that helped deceive the Nazies into believing the invasion would be at Calia instead of Normande. The book was written by Nigel West according to a Discovery Channel series on famous spys. Mason Gardner 14222 Lee Hwy Gainesville, VA 2015

Historia De Familias Cubanas (Coleccion Cuba Y Sus Jueces)
Published in Paperback by Ediciones Universal (1985)
Author: Francisco Xavier De, Conde San Juan De Jaruco Santa Cruz Y Mallen
Amazon base price: $49.00
Average review score:

An invaluable resource about Cuba's historical families
The Conde de Jaruco, as the author is known, was an avid compiler of the histories of Cuban families. Though this volume, as well as the other nine of this series, concentrates on the elite and upper-class families, it is an invaluable resource for the historian and genealogist. For each family mentioned, the author provides a short history about their origins. He then provides a genealogy of the family in Cuba. For each generation he gives the names of the parents, their children, and sometimes the spouses and their children. At various times several generations of each branch are given. Though many times the dates on which various events occurred are not included, by careful reading they may be deduced. Anyone working on their Cuban genealogy or the history of important Cuban families would do well to have the entire ten volume collection of Historia de Familias Cubanas in their personal libraries.

Extra Extra Read all about it
I was surprised to learn that I am a direct descendant of Queen Joan the Mad of Castile! Duy the darn book already, smelly!

Fantastico!

Historical Paradors: A Journey Through Spanish Hotels
Published in Hardcover by Konemann (1999)
Authors: Juan Eslara Galan and Konemann
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

Bringing back memories
Having stayed in 38 paradors in Spain, I found this book to be most interesting and illustrated with beautiful photographs; I only wish it had included a few more of the paradors. Many of our friends know that we are devoted to the Paradores, and now plan our yearly trips to Spain around them, so I consider this book to be an appropriate Christmas gift.

GREAT PHOTOS and useful information!
About 80% beautiful photos and 20% useful information, Historical Paradors : A Journey Through Spanish Hotels shows a side of beautiful Spain that most tourists never see. The photos of these stunning architectural wonders stir the imagination of the Old World and makes me twitch towards planning my next trip to Spain. This book is DEFINITELY coffee-table caliber!!! And if MadridMan of MadridMan.com likes it, it's GOT to be gooooood!
