Outstanding
A very realistic story of the saga of the Cuban Nation split in two! The frustation of realizing that the main obstacle for peace remains the narrow minds of the "totalitarian style folks" that mirror each other's destrucive behavior within Cuba and in exile. Must be wait until the old generation passes on, or are we allowing them to contaminate this generation with their Castro-centric hatred??? For the sake of our children, the buck must stop with us. Let's have compassion and reconstruction. What we do today will affect the future generations.

Cannabalism in the West
I found the book very interesting from the start. The book gives the reader an overview of John C. Fremont's life, discusses some of his early expeditions then focuses on his infamous Fourth Expedition in which the subject of cannabalism is investigated.

A Real Discovery
This collection of 11 short stories set in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado is little known but well worth the readers time. There are no real heroes in the book, just a variety of men and women who are forced to deal with dilemmas we all face in our everyday life. The settings for the stories are in mountain mining towns such as Telluride, Ouray, Montrose, Gunnison, Cortez, Dolores and Norwood, Colorado. The stories are intense, frightening, honest and some come Oh so close to home. Let's look at one of them. In Toward the Sun, you have a woman dealing with the probability that the man she loves, and who loves her in his own way, is slipping away. The following description of his honesty is an example of the wonderful writing in the book. "But he cannot be dishonest. If there were a seed of dishonesty in him, he would, like an oyster, make a pearl of it. That kind of honesty is both hard to come by and hard to endure." The age old desire to change someone to fit your expectations and the possible results and cost of such change, are fit into a marvelous story which will leave you with a wider perspective of life and the choices we make. Is honesty really the best policy? Is happiness worth any cost? Nelson explores the age old dilemma of someone that has a job but no options or alternatives and tries to deal with desires and longings, as follows: "Maybe he liked the dog for his hunger: The dog had done something-he'd escaped, hidden, lived free. Marshall envied that. He had hunger too, but for what? He didn't know for what. Maybe he had hunger for hunger. He wanted to do something. Something: that didn't say much. Do what? Something besides work." This is the first book I have read by Nelson but it will not be the last. Fortunately, he has written three other novels, two collections of short stories and a host of short stories in literary magazines. He also has won a PEN fiction award and the Edward Abbey Prize for Ecofiction. This is an above average book by an above average author.

Multiculturalism as a means for counterhegemonic measures.
Juan Flores, using an exquisite prose, treats us throuh a series of separate essays dialectically united about the puertorrican culture and identity "crisis". The book is a firm statement against cultural nationalism, cultural "hispanofilia", and other purist visions inside the puertorrican culture context. It extends the puertorrican culture to those living in the states, taking as close case of study the ones living in New York. More than mere and engaging exposition, it proposes or tries to show us the headings the latinos should address in a counterhegemonic struggle against mainstream(in it's rigidest form) culture in the U. S.

Don Giovanni/the Opera Journeys Mini Guide Series

Amazon base price: $9.75

Mini-sized guide with maxi-helpful information
The Opera Journeys Mini Guide Series is just wonderful; it's like a "Cliff Note" of the opera, and extremely informative and educational. I particularly like the size; these guides are not cumbersome and fit right into my shirt pocket. The ladies will find sufficient room in their pocketbooks.

The story narrative with the music examples is excellent. I prefer it to a libretto; indeed, it's a much easier way to follow the essence of the story. The essay is magnificent; very well written, not pedantic, and extremely insightful and comprehensible. I congratulate Burton Fisher for a job very well done and Amazon for making these handy, information-laden booklets available. The Opera Journeys Mini Guide Series is a wonderful contribution to opera education and opera appreciation.

My tip: acquire the entire collection because you will be in easy reach of superbly presented opera guides consisting of story analysis, principal characters in the opera, story narrative with music highlights, background, analysis, and commentary.
