OUTSTANDING!!! A real parenting tool.
A friend told me about this book, and I gave it to two friends as babyshower gifts. My two friends have called me several times to thank me for this helpful gift that has helped them to understand and feel comfortable with their newborns. Further, they've commented that the book has actually helped them to look forward to the toddler years.

A good presentation of the paramilitary phenomenon
Juan E. Méndez and Cynthia Arnson are human rights pioneers. Certainly they had a lot of help on the ground in Colombia and that expertise was invaluable. This book is dedicated to the memory of Blanca Cecilia Valero de Durán of the Comité Regional para la Defensa de los Derechos Humanos assassinated on January 29, 1992. The authors examine, political violence, the guerrilla war and the peace process, the drug war and U.S. policy. It is comprehensive and well written. Americans should read this book to see our tax dollars are used in Colombia.

excellent
I work in a large county hospital on the burn unit. When my manager suggested that I look at this book I was amazed. Usually when you read a book about burn care it gives very limited photos, and great detail about the surgical corrections made. In this book all departments share the spotlight. PT and OT, nutrition, nursing, doctors all share equal time. The book goes into great detail about the full color pictures illustrating the different burn injuries. This book is a must read for anyone in the medical field especially in burn medicine.

¿Desafinados?

A Magician
If you are looking for a book with stories that are, at best described as intriguing, then you must own Confabulario Definitivo by Juan José Arreola. Arreola knows how to play with narrative techniques in a manner that will leave the reader in doubt.
In a short story titled, "El guardagujas", Arreola opens up by introducing us to the two characters and leaves almost the whole story in form of dialogue between the two of them. The story develops through their dialogue and leaves the reader wanting more. The story itself is worthy of reading for its hidden meaning and humorous but enlightening ending.
Read "El guardagujas" and the other imaginative short stories in Confabulario Definitivo. More than an author, Arreola is an artist.

Absolutely excellent introduction to GB theory
This is by far the most readable introduction to GB theory I have ever come across. It does presume some knowledge of very basic syntax, but everything it covers from there on is explained very clearly. Granted, it was written in the late 80's, but this is all stuff you still ought to know! If only others could follow Lasnik and Uriagereka's lead...
Crusaders for Wildlife: A History of Wildlife Stewardship in Southwestern Colorado
Published in Paperback by Western Reflections Inc (17 May, 2000)
Amazon base price: $16.95
Average review score:
A two for one deal
I spent four years on the Western Slope of Colorado involved in one way or another with some of the wonderful literary talent in the area. If there is one thing I learned it was that when Western Reflection Publishing Company of Ouray, Colorado published a book it was usually worth looking at. This one is no exception. In fact, the reader of this book gets not only a well-edited book but one written by a highly talented Western slope author: kind of a two for one deal. Glen Hinshaw spent thirty-four years as a Colorado wildlife officer specializing in the San Juan Mountains and southwestern Colorado. For most of this time he was "on the ground" working out of Creede, CO. to preserve and protect the wildlife heritage that most people associate with Colorado and too many take for granted. Crusaders for Wildlife is a highly readable history of the near demise of many of Colorado's wild animals just a hundred years ago and the mostly unknown efforts of a band of dedicated crusaders that toiled to preserve and return the wildlife heritage for generations to come. This is not your usual history book. It is better. To be sure, there is an abundance of well-researched, well-written histories of the fish and game that make the San Juan Mountains truly a national treasure. You will learn of the stewardship of the land and wildlife by the Ute Indians and exploitation by early settlers. You will learn some of the complex issues that confront wildlife officers as they struggle to balance the needs of wildlife with the changing demands and expectations of a growing populace. The effects of logging, grazing, and roads on wildlife is examined in a balanced manner and the age-old question of the possibility of Grizzlies in the San Juan's is addressed. You will also learn about Whirling disease which is threatening Colorado's legendary fishing reputation and the reasons behind setting limits on Elk and Deer kills. Yes, its all here. If you are a hunter, fisher or simply have had the opportunity to visit the incomparable San Juan Mountains and want to know about the history of the game and fish in the area, this is the book for you. Hinshaw has a knack of writing in such a manner that you feel you are riding along side of him as he patrols the mountains he so obviously loves. It's like sitting at home with an old friend visiting about wildlife and mountains and other memories that matter. We are indebted to Hinshaw for a superb, readable history of an area truly blessed to have attracted the attention of these Crusaders for Wildlife. This one is worth the reader's time.

Goytisolo's perspective on Orientalism
Juan Goytisolo has a wealth of knowledge in Oriental and Islamic studies and his modernity brings a refreshing perspective on the whole Spanish identity and mytification of the moor quesiton. I recommend Cronicas Sarracinas to anyone who is interested in getting a modern outlook on often forgotten medieval and renascentist aspects of what is now known as Spain. Over and above being an enthusiast in the subject, he is a prolific, outspoken and very well-informed writer. One benefits from his wide-range perspective especially in this book, which raises many questions on the still boiling question of Arab, Berber and most importantly Islamic influences that are partially responsible for bringing about the Renaissance in Europe through the Iberic Peninsula. Even for the amateur, the style and ideas are certainly worthwhile spending the time to enjoy.
Cuaderno de Sarajevo : anotaciones de un viaje a la barbarie

Insight into the Sarajevo war experience
Goytisolo was able to infiltrate virtually inaccessible ground during the war in Sarajevo, and his chronicles make up a compelling account of what he saw and experienced. It is a well-written, insightful and disturbing series of events, with the accuracy of a reporter and the unmistakeable style he has spent decades developing. A worthwhile read, to remind ourselves of the atrocities humans are capable of, when we stop thinking of our neighbours as equals.
