Palmeras de la brisa rápida : un viaje a Yucatán
Published in Unknown Binding by Alianza Editorial Mexicana ()

Mayas drinking Coca Cola

A FIVE STAR KNOCK OUT...
RAMIREZ HAS BRAVELY WRITTEN AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY PLOTTING HIS LIFE'S PILGRIMAGE FROM CHILDHOOD TO SOBRIETY. AS A TRUE AMERICAN VIETNAM WAR HERO, HIS VERY PERSONAL TALE IS INTERTWINED WITH MOMENTS OF GREAT JOY, CONFUSION ABOUT HIS HERITAGE AND SELF-IDENTITY, DESTRUCTIVE BEHAVIOR AND HIS ULTIMATE SURVIVAL. I FOUND MYSELF ENTHRALLED BY RAMIREZ' WRITING STYLE. ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASSION, RAMIREZ' PROSE AND TIMING, IN THE MIDST OF THE MOST UNUSUAL CIRCUMSTANCES, RIVALS THE BEST. EVEN THOUGH I LAUGHED AND CRIED WITH RAMIREZ, HE NEVER LOOSES SIGHT OF WHO HE IS AND RECOGNIZES MILLIONS OF WAR VETERANS FOR TAKING A SIMILAR JOURNEY.

MY HAT IS OFF TO MR. RAMIREZ FOR WRITING A POIGNANT AND COMPELLING BOOK THAT FREELY EXPOSES HIS INNER FELLINGS. HIS WILLINGNESS TO SHARE HIS LIFE, FOR GOOD AND BAD, IS TRULY STIMULATING AND INSIGHTFUL.

A monumental work
This is a monumental work by an author who made six trips to Argentina, and also traveled to Spain and Panama, while researching this book. The author refers to Juan Peron as the most remarkable and enduring leader in Latin American history. The author proceeds to describe this remarkable career, following Peron from his humble birth in rural Argentina, to his military training, to the Presidency (1946), exile, and return to Argentina in the early 1970s where he would die in office. Brief mention is made of Isabel's tragic and short reign as President after the death of her husband. Extensive information is also available regarding Peron's relationship with Eva Peron ("Evita"), with a few chapters devoted to her. A section of photographs is available as well.

The author's description of Juan Peron is comprehensive and complex, and may therefore be best suited for someone already very familiar with Peron and contemporary Argentine history. If you are looking for a more brief and succinct historical rendering of Peron's career, you may want to look elsewhere, perhaps to JUAN AND EVA PERON by Clive Foss. My favorite biography of Juan Peron is PERON AND ENIGMAS OF ARGENTINA by Robert D. Crassweller. Crassweller explains in PERON AND THE ENIGMAS OF ARGENTINA that Peron was a product of the "Hispanic Creole" tradition, and that all his successes and failures can be seen within the context of that culture, and in many ways were *shaped* by that culture. In fact, Crassweller argues that Peron's real talent was his keen insight into the culture, his keen intuition in understanding how to reach out to and unify as many different segments of Argentina as possible. While Joseph Page does attempt to provide cultural insight, he does not succeed to the extent that Crassweller does.

Joseph Page comes to a conclusion that may surprise many: that Juan Peron was a pacifist at heart; "He steadfastly rejected violence as an open instrument of policy." Page also points out the irony that Peron, once considered by some as a "South American Hitler," would have never plunged or plundered his country into war, and that it was the men who ousted Peron who went on to kill thousands of people.

Peronism and the Three Perons: A Checklist

The three Perons - the 'social' workers of Argentina
It's the story of Juan Domingo Peron, the 'leader' of Argentina in the 5oth, Evita Peron - his secound wife and the 'heart' of Argentina and Isabelle Peron - his 3rd and last wive. It tells the story of three people that want to become a leader - two were it. But the only Peron who was loved by the people - I mean really loved - died too young to become a leader. Evita, or Maria Eva Duarte de Peron, died at 36. It's a great story of 3 great people

Great resource on Puerto Rican History in New York!
To most people, the migration of Puerto Ricans to mainland United States seems to be a fairly recent one. In fact, Puerto Ricans have been migrating to New York and other U.S. states since the end of the 19th century.

Divided chronologically and thematically, this collection of images document the Puerto Rican experience in New York. It includes photos as well as images of programs, ads, passports and other documents.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Latino and particularly Puerto Rican culture and history. Of particular importance would be to share this with the youth to show them the rich history that is rarely, if ever, taught in schools.

The most moving part of the book was the photos of the farm workers being transported in chartered flights. During the eight-hour flight they had to sit on beach chairs and once at their destination taken directly to the farm camps to work.

a childhood favorite that grows with you
Platero and I is a series of vignettes about the life of a poor poet and his treasured donkey and the small Spanish village in which they live. Written in richly lyrical prose, it is a hauntingly beautiful book which explores the depths of human emotion and feeling, and the concepts of love, loyalty, friendship, and freedom. The language and the short chapters are simple enough to hold the attention of even children--I myself read this book for the first time as a child, and over the years I have returned to it time and again. It is a timeless literary classic that never grows old--the more one reads it, the more one gets out of it. The original, longer version is a little hard to find these days, but well worth the effort--you will be well-rewarded if you do decide to search it out. Once you read it, you will understand why Jimenez won the Nobel Prize for literature.
