Gunkholing very comprehensive
This new edition has the local information I was looking for. It has detailed information on anchorages, local marinas - with contact information - local people, history, and lots of pictures of where you may be planning to go. It is informative on a number of related subjects, and was very entertaining. A must for anyone planning to cruse in the San Juan Islands. It's my most used book on the subject.

Huellas del Islam en la literatura española : de Juan Ruiz a Juan Goytisolo
Published in Unknown Binding by Hiperiâon ()
Author: Luce López Baralt

Average review score:

A solid stepping stone in the study
"Huellas" is a must-read for any student of Spanish literature, especially if studying medieval or Siglo de Oro. She is one of very few experts in the field of Islamic literary influences in Spanish literature, and her work is seen and recognized in practically all relevant milieus in the study of Spanish literature. The book is very well documented, and partially takes from her extensive research in the field (she did her PhD thesis on the Islamic mysticism present in Juan Ruiz). It includes very insightful footnotes, it is well organized and intelligently written. It makes sense that she would look at such prominent Spanish writers as: Juan Ruiz (el Arcipreste de Hita), Santa Teresa (one of two essential mystics of the XVI c.), San Juan de la Cruz (the other essential mystic) and Juan Goytisolo (the modern view on the integration of the Moor not as "other" but as part of the Spanish self). "Huellas" also includes informative chapters on subversive literature that is still being desciphered. This book is a must, together with Menocal's book on the Arabic role in Medieval Literary History. Many have expanded on this research, but "Huellas" still remains a very important stepping stone in the research of Islamic influences in Spanish literature.

Hysteria from Freud to Lacan : The Splendid Child of Psychoanalysis (The Lacanian Clinical Field)

An important contribution to psychoanalytic literature.
Edited by Judith Feher Gurewich in collaboration with Susan Fairfield, Juan-David Nasio's Hysteria From Freud To Lacan examines the concept of hysteria in the English-speaking psychoanalytic world. Widely held to reflect outmoded cultural prejudices against woman, hysteria has virtually disappeared from psychoanalytic literature, diagnostic manuals, and training programs. However, far from being gender-bound, hysteria for Jacques Lacan represents a psychic strategy that bears on one of the mot fundamental preoccupations of existence: What doe it mean to be a woman? What does it mean to be a man? Hysteria From Freud To Lacan is an important and engaging contribution to the growing library of psychoanalytic literature and highly recommended reading for students of psychology, psychiatry, counseling, and the nature of what it means to be human.

Images of the San Juans: Historical Selections from the Ruth and Marvin Gregory Photograph Collection
Published in Hardcover by Western Reflections Inc (1997)
Authors: P. David Smith, Marvin Gregory, and Ruth Gregory
Amazon base price: $34.95
Used price: $95.95
Average review score:

A most fascinating book!
I have a collection of more than 100 books relating to Colorado andits history. "Images of the San Juans" is my favorite.

The large and well-preserved photographs from the Marvin and Ruth Gregory collection are fascinating as are the descriptions by P. David Smith. Most books offer only a sentence or two about a photograph but Mr. Smith gives a detailed description in a most interesting style. He points out small details in many of the photos which might otherwise go unnoticed. He answers questions and even raises a few of his own. I felt like I was being let in on some secrets from the past.

When I received the book, I anxiously leafed through the pages and stopped on page 38. The first words I read were "A chance to look back into the past is always something special."

Indeed, I enjoyed the journey through time.
