What a Gem.
I bought this book 3 years ago and totally love it.The plant info and the photographs are beautiful. A lot of the info comes from Natives and give the readers information on what the plants can be used for like remedies for toothaches etc. The photographs, over 1000 of them, are all done in colour and are absolutely beautiful. I would have paid 3 times the amount for this book. A must for the outdoorsman.

Plotinus (Arguments of the Philosophers)
Published in Library Binding by Routledge (1999)
Author: Lloyd P. Gerson
Amazon base price: $130.00
Average review score:

Understand the very influential philosopher
It might not be clear to modern readers how important Plotinus was. His Enneads, consisting of 54 essays, is an attempt for a world view that is going to exert great influence on medieval Islam and Christianity. In this work of Gerson, he continued the thinking he laid out in his where he pinpoints the central question Greek philosophers tried to answer: What is the ultimate cause and principle of explanation? In this way, the superiority of the Plotinian answer over that of Plato's and Aristotle's becomes clear. The reading in this book is very dense, but it is rewarding to me personally to see how studying of ancient Greek philosophy CAN be of value in the contemporary world in clarifying our own ideas and our implicit world view.

Without understanding Plotinus (and arguably Origen) and the anchor points, it is virtually impossible to understand and compare the various medieval philosophies from Augustine to Thomas Aquinas and Duns Scotus.

Excellent Boiler Code Interpretation
We have found this book to be thorough in its explanation of applications to the code as it relates to our profession. We have attended seminars given by Mr. Yoder and Mr. Bernstein. This book together with their course should be mandatory for any engineer in our industry. An engineers book for engineers. It is obvious that they are experts in their fields. Well done.

A Fresh view of the Puritans
This is a masterful introduction to Puritan Life and Thought. Unashamed in their view of Election and God's Sovereignty, they then proceeded to live their life powerfully and fervently. Although this is not a work of a single thesis (it is divided into chapters on topics ranging from the Sabbath to Notable Puritans to Revival) it is an excellent and unashamed view of men "whom the world was not worthy." Its main theme is that the puritans were the strongest where the church today is the weakest. this si a definite read

Informative, thought provoking and relevant
This book is a collection of addresses given by the Reverend Lloyd-Jones. He presents the puritan view of a wide range of issues relevant for the church today including revival, engagement with culture and the nature of the church. He also introduces us to the historical figures such as Whitfield, Owen and Edwards and briefly analyzes the historical development of the puritans and the methodists.

Reading the book shattered many of my assumptions, provoking me to ponder a perspective refreshingly different from much of the contemporary evangelical rhetoric. Learning of the faith of those who walked before us gives us a wider lens with which to critically examine our understanding of scriptures and our worldview. Also gone now from my thinking are the caricatures which society (and sadly, the church) use to malign these imperfect, yet Godly men. O, that we may recapture the passion and the single-mindedness for the glory of God exemplified by them.

An excellent collection.
This book is by far the most complete collection of drawings and paintings of women by Rembrandt. Very well-written and organized, the book reveals how Rembrandt perceived and expressed the beauty of the female body. Interestingly enough, Rembrandt went above the common practice of his time, that is the use of "goddess-like" proportion in painting females. At one time considered hideous by his contemporaries, Rembrandt's paintings of women are among the most beautiful, earthly, and sensual. Each painting reproduction is so vivid; readers who understand the process of painting by the Old Masters can somewhat picture how ingenius effects may have done just by looking into these plates.

A must-have for any art lover!

Romans and Blacks (Oklahoma Series in Classical Culture, Vol 2)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Txt) (1989)
Author: Lloyd A. Thompson
Amazon base price: $39.95
Used price: $53.20
Average review score:

An Important And Provocative Work
A very impressive book. In his "Romans And Blacks," Thompson elegantly and thoughtfully explains the "racial" worldview of the ancient Romans. According to Thompson, the Romans had a completely different, and far healthier, understanding of physical differences (ie. race) than we do today and, consequently, were not racist, at least not in the modern sense. In addition, Thompson critiques much of the earlier research and analysis of the Romans' racial views. The common error made by earlier classicists, according to Thompson, was to impute modern racial views to the Romans, thereby unintentionally distorting the source material. Thompson's research is exhaustive and his argumentation is lucid. Most impressive, though, is the originality and sheer intelligence of his thoughts. "Romans and Blacks" provides great insight into the Roman view of race, and, by doing so, provides a context for understanding the modern view of race. I highly recommend "Romans and Blacks." (It is even better than Snowden's works.)

The Santa Fe in Colorado
This book is no. 23 in the prestigious annual publications of the Colorado Railroad Museum. It details the arrival of the AT&SF Railroad in Colorado with the major portion of the book being dedicated to the history of the Raton Pass section of the line. It is heavily illustrated with excellent black and white photography, including a section on the steam engines that worked the area. Photography is almost exclusively of the steam era. No history of the Santa Fe and specifically Raton Pass is complete without this volume. Hardback, 296 pages.

A wonderful finale!
(This book is a sequel to The Sorceress of Scath, and the final book in the quadrilogy.) Alan MacDougall enters Lucifer's world through the fourth and final gate, and discovers a whole new island. Avilion is a land where six cultures (Celtic, Indian, Chinese, Egyptian, and African) are allowed to grow in isolation. And, it turns out that this is for one reason: the training of Alan MacDougall. Lucifer has plans to make MacDougall an all-powerful world conqueror back on Earth. With such forces bent on making him into something new, can Alan MacDougall hope to win?

This book is a wonderful finale to the Alan MacDougall series! The book is somewhat different than the first three, with MacDougall's plight bringing some real suspense to the story. It rolls on, gathering speed, until the surprising conclusion. I enjoyed this book very much, and recommend it to everyone.
