The title of my review may be a mystery to those who haven't read the book. It's part of an off-camera punchline uttered by Paul Lynde that cannot be repeated in a family-oriented review, but almost worth the price of the book alone. I watched the original squares and consider it one of the funniest programs on TV, period. Here, Marshall recalls many of the funniest moments, and the ones he doesn't repeat are on the included CD, "Zingers from the Hollywood Squares."
If the book itself doesn't quite measure up to five stars, the CD brings it up to that stratosphere.
My only suggestion is it might have saved time and paper if Marshall listed only the people who've NOT appeared on the show. The show's guests were the Who's Who of Hollywood, and if Marshall missed naming one, I don't see how.
For a fan of any TV show, backstage info is always welcome. While it is no Show Biz secret that many of the funny "adlibs" were in fact written for the guests, it was the attitude and timing of the stars delivery that made it all work.
Lots of pictures, good show biz anecdotes, and a CD to boot? What's not to like?
I can't wait for Master Tom Bergeron to unveil the secrets of the current version. Like the fact that Whoopi--no longer producer/Center Square--seemed to know almost every question asked when she was in the booth, but was almost no help whatsoever when she came down for the lightning round, or if she was asked a "secret Square" question. Could it be that she didn't want to be embarrased, but King World would not risk the integrity of the "contest" by giving her (or allowing her to guess) the answers to critical questions in advance? Tom?

I just bought this book a week ago and read it in two days. Now that Game Show Network has brought the show back, it's nice to also read about it. Peter Marshall has written a book not about his life, but his time on "The Hollywood Squares". He talks about what life was like with Paul Lynde, Rose-Marie, George Gobel and many others that I loved as a kid watching the show.

I gave this five stars because of the book. It also includes a wonderful CD with the zingers that we all loved to hear after a question was asked. The only drawback on this CD is hearing Buddy Hackett's laugh for much of the CD, and it's always the same laugh! It's irritating to listen to, but I can get past that.

The book answers many questions and gives many secrets of what went on in the heyday of this show. I won't spoil it for others, but it has information on the recently discovered thought to be destroyed episodes that GSN now airs. Plus, you can read about stars of today who were contestants on the show. One secret I'll give away is the fact that Naomi Judd was once a contestant!

Buy this book today. You'll find it's worth the money!

"Backstage with the Original Hollywood Squares" is written by Peter Marshall himself, and he couldn't have made it any better. Firstly, it is very touching, because we get it first-hand from him as he looks back on his years with those great friends of his, all those celebrity panelists, and at times it's quite sad. Second, it's hilarious, because he complies so many of the best quotes, jokes, and one-liners that made the original Hollywood Squares as good as it was. Third, there is so much information here that any fan of the show needs this book! Peter gives you the inside scoop on his own life and the lives of the panelists. There is a HUGE list of every panelist who EVER appeared on the show. Peter tells you things you would never guess just by watching the show. He tells you who his favorites and least favorites were. He gives accounts of the various trips taken by the HS family, including a particularly disastrous Christmas vacation to Jamaica. He decribes the romances that blossomed on the show, the funny letters they received, and how it all finally ended. This book answers pretty much any question about the original Hollywood Squares that we're capable of asking it as fans. It's not one of those short, cheap, all-black-and-white books that hardly tell you anything. It's a 200-page total recount of the show's life. Good reading!

The AWK Programming Language was written very well. The first couple of chapters describe the language and the rest are full of real-world examples. The exercises at the end of each section are very helpful and expand on the examples given. Any one who works with flat data files should be familiar with awk, and this is the book to get the job done.

This is THE bible for awk users. If you refuse to use perl, which incorporated most of awk, or have to maintain old awk scripts then this is the text. I like the O'Reilly text for learning the basics, but after that you need this guide. For some tasks awk is the premier solution, for others, use awk as part of the solution along with perl and a shell script. Still a cool language. And this book is very helpful for both beginning intermediate programmers of awk and advanced users.

While the Nutshell book is more of a reference guide, Aho's shows how to really use the language with practical examples.

From basic examples to flatfile reports and using Awk to try out language issues in compiler design.

For those who know Awk there are some great ideas in here. For those who are just starting out it's an excellent way to ease yourself into writing Awk scripts.

A script writers must have.

This is a perfect bedtime book because the illustrations are so calm and soothing, yet not boring. The pictures exhibit humor as well, especially the pictures of Fabian the cat having to escape the baby (although it's never explicity stated, and does not portray the baby negatively) and the picture of Fabian enjoying the fun of unrolling toilet paper. The book is simply beautiful, and adult pet owners as well as children will enjoy it.

The Publishers Weekly editorial review of this book is entirely accurate so I'll leave the details to them. I loved this book for the perfection of the way the artist/author captures the exhuberant love for life expressed by the dog and cat characters, Hondo, Fred and Fabian. Peter McCarty manages to give us the essence of a happy day in the lives of these animals. It is so infectious that I felt happy just looking at the simple yet evocative illustrations. This is a book for very young children, I suppose, and I'm sure toddlers will love it and will be readily able to appreciate the fun it celebrates, but as an adult I loved the way it illuminates the feelings of non-verbal beings and the opportunity it gives us to glimpse the richness of those feelings that we so often overlook. It's a wonderful book.

What a beautiful book! I'm a 25-year-old college senior who saw this wonderful book in the bookstore on campus. The illustrations are breath-taking and the story is simple and sweet. I'm keeping this copy for myself! I just had to get it. The fantastic pictures make you want to reach in and pet Fabian and Hondo. Give this book to someone to someone who will love it! Sure to become a classic.

This book is from an era of modern-expensive-top-of-designer-coffe-table-books and from way overhyped art directors as Bruce Mau, David Carson and others. But Stagmeister in another story. Witty, smart, so intelligent and original that I think he really deserves all these 5 stars. Even closed the book has design, good humour and idea. In overhyped designers age, this is the one who deserves it.

This book was such a relief for my eyes when they're all been fed up with fancy, trendy , modernistic, digital-based design books (or whatever they call themselves).

I keep a 30 gallon reef aquarium in my apartment and I am blessed with having a considerable amount of success for my first attempt at the hobby. I have purchased a couple of clams in the past, both of which turned out to be failures. Through word of mouth this book was recommended to me for the animals that I currently keep and the animals I would like to keep (SPS corals and clams). This book is full of information ranging from algea control to water quality to even identifying different species of SPS corals and clams. My only dissappointment was that I was hoping for a very detailed list of compatible organisms. I understand that certain corals tend to send out stinging tenticles that can harm recessive corals. Although this phenomenon is mentioned in the book it fails to give the specific list that I was hoping for. But don't let this negativity dissuade you from this purchase. There is so much other information in it I feel that it is critical for everyone who is new to the hobby to regard this book as their bible. Even the experienced may have something to learn from this literature.

The Reef Aquarium has information for all degrees of reef keepers. Being a first timer in the field,I found this book to be as vital as the tank itself. This book has all the information that you will need for a great tank. It goes into depth on information with regards to aquascaping, lighting, and water parameters. It also deals with the diseases and pests of the reef tank. When setting up a tank listen to one person or book. I recommend this book to be that one book.

This is a very good book on reef aquarium keeping, I just wish that I would have known before hand that volume one is clams and stony corals, and that volume two is soft coral. This fact alone would have been helpful in determining which volume I needed first.

As a professional horticulturalist, gosh what a word, I spotted this delightful book in the Beaufort Public Library, kept it out too long because I did not want to take it back and it cost me a 75 cent fine...such a deal. Now I MUST buy my own, even though my birthday is less than a month away. It makes propagation a breeze. And what great graphics and photos. I'll be out gathering palmetto seeds soon. Ever wonder what to do with a sago palm seed? You won't believe what they need to sprout. Now I know why the plant is so expensive to buy. With this book you have the knowledge to start just about any plant you can think of.

I bought this book for my husband, but I use it more than he does! This is one of the best plant books I have ever seen. The techniques are easy to understand and follow, the pictures are outstanding, and there are TONS of plants listed! This book will take you through the history of plant propagation, genetic ins and outs, and the techniques that you can use in your own garden. If you have a garden full of veggies, or a yard with trees, shrubs, and rose bushes, this book really is a must for you!

I Have to say this is the best Garden book out of all my Garden books,all the pictures and details in this book is so great, this is one reason I have this book. I checked this book out of the library before I bought this book. The step by step instructions along with the pictures is so helpful. I have never been so interested in a book in my life. Now that I have this book I will be doing more Propagation for family & friends. I Love This Book, you must have if you love to garden.

I LOVED this book. Practical, useful, funny, refreshing. I was delighted with the specific suggestions and useful information provided. I could pick it up anywhere, read from anywhere. It's a delight to have a leadership book so accessible.

In particular, the chapters on the change cycle and the benefits we get in NOT changing were especially useful and thought-provoking.

My only problem was everyone who picked up my copy wanted to take it with them.

Lightning in a Bottle is the best management book that I have ever read - and that is saying a lot because after an MBA and years as a manager I have read too many management books! David Baum's book is FUN and FAST READING and PRACTICAL. Best of all Dr. Baum dispenses business advice that has the wisdom of experience. I used his advice - the chapter about facilitating change by getting all of the affected employees and managers in the same room. Over 100 people did a workshop together to find creative plans to implement an internal project. The meeting was dynamic and very successful and the general manager was impressed by the new approach. In summary, I highly recommend this book. I read it during a couple of short plane flights (it is only about 200 pages) and these few hours turned out to be the most useful 'training' time that I gave myself in the last few years.

...A practical reflection of David's travels through corporations... and life. Lots of very useful and inspiring ideas of what to do and what NOT to do to solve problems in organizations. The book is organized into short, easy to read chapters, each making a key point.

NOT the usual business rhetoric; instead it's based on actual experiences, so it's both funny and packed with learning. Highly recommended!

Cohan has written a solid book in which he clearly articulates the building blocks for the Internet Economy. Part industry analysis, part case study, and part inside story, the author has managed to get his hands aournd an incredibly broad, fast moving segment of the new economy. Having read way too many business books in my time, I found Cohan's straight forward, common-sensical approach to the subject matter refreshing. He combines well known cases like Yahoo with lesser known ones such as Mecklermedia that often prove to be even more informative. His clear writing style lacks the buzz-words and sales pitches which plague so many other books. The purpose of this book is to inform and it does so admirably. I recommend the book to anyone seeking a roadmap to the pitfalls and opportunities, the innovators and key players of the Internet. I have used the book with a number of clients in order to help them begin to understand the development and opportunities of this new marketspace.

Whatever combination of education and experience Peter Cohan has accumulated that would permit him to so clearly and intelligently dissect the wild and wooly world of Internet business, they certainly have played in concert to produce "Net Profit."

The field is complex and misunderstood enough as it is. This book was terrific. When I read the book MATERIAL WORLD, A GLOBAL FAMILY PORTRAIT, I thought there was no book like it that could be better. Now when I read it, all I wish is to have is WOMEN IN THE MATERIAL WORLD . I cannot believe how good it is. I recomend this book for all ages (I am 11).

When I first ordered this book and received it in the mail, after opening the box it came in, sat down right then and there "just to take a peek". Well, let's just say, my short "peek" turned into an interrupted 30 minutes! "Women in the Material World" certainly joins the ranks of "can't-put-down-and-can't-forget-about" books. It is a very worthy sequel to "Material World", in which women from some of the "Material World" families are looked at more closely. Perhaps the most special thing about this book is a long, personal, and intimate interview with each women. The women are surprisingly open in responding about their daily life, their children, their marriage, and their future hopes. "Women in the Material World" simply lets the women speak for themselves, and in the process, breaks down many stereotypes (who would have thought a 58-year Chinese woman would love farming much more than her traditional household duties?)and lets others remain (the secluded life of an Indian woman). Statistics for that country, quick facts about each woman, a brief write-up on conditions for women in each of their countries, and field notes from the photographer further enrich this amazing book. The women in this book will inspire you, challenge you, and never let you forget this book.

I read the book, Women in the Material World after I saw the author at a young women's conference last year. I thought the book was great. It showed many women's points of view on life and the way they live. This book made me think about other women and how we are all very different but also the same. I think this book is very truthful and has a beautiful message. There are not many books like this out there so I commend Faith for writing it.
