The best, and I mean that exactly, the best adventure book for adults ever, and I mean that exactly, ever written. My friend and I constantly recommend books to each other, and one or the other of us will say, "It's a good book but..." and the other will always respond "...it's not The Last Hero" Put this book down and you will not sleep until you pick it up again. I am on my fifth read, and I am sure that it will not be my last. There are images and moments that I will never forget. I cannot believe that anyone allowed this book to go out of stock. Find it, steal it, read it, you will not be sorry

Wonderfully Written Historic Novel
The story told in "The Last Hero" is that of Sir Henry Morton Stanley (of "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" fame, but that's another story) who, in 1885 organized and led a mission to rescue Emin Pasha, governor of Equatoria, the southernmost province of the Egyptian Sudan, which was surrounded by the Mahdist uprising. Amazingly, Stanley decided to approach Equatoria from the Atlantic side of Africa by going up the Congo river and overland through central African forest. The expedition crossed hundreds of miles of then-unknown Africa, encountering every obstacle and difficulty along the way. The eventual end of the mission is one of history's great ironies, but I don't want to give anything away.

"The Last Hero" is a very well-written adventure story, all the more interesting because it is true. My only complaint (a very minor one) concerns the absence of notes and bibliography which could have given some historical documentation and sources.

Another good book is "The River Congo: The Discovery, Exploration and Exploitation of the World's Most Dramatic River" (nonfiction) which is also by Peter Forbath (a journalist who reported on Africa). Henry Morton Stanley was also a bestselling author, he wrote: "How I Found Livingstone" (1872); "Through the Dark Continent" (1878); and "In Darkest Africa" (1890).

Seldom, if ever, does a book capture you this thoroughly...
Not many novels have the effect of this one. If I have to pick a 'prequel' to Robert Ruark's _Something of Value_ than it is surely this one. If you like Forbath's, then read Ruark's!

_The Last Hero_ sweeps you away to a time when honor and ego and plain old guts -- combined with the vast heart of unexplored Africa meant adventure. I read this novel in amazement, at the rich characterization, the lavish settings, the graphic narrative; only to be further amazed when I learned that this wasn't a mere work of historical fiction, but rather a fictionalized account of real events.

Read it. You won't find many novels that do this. Serious business, deep in the Congo Ituri rainforest, late 19th century...no one can hear you scream.

Life changing reading
Secrets of the soil changed the way that I approach life. The book details the wonders of how everything is connected in the cosmos, and we are but a tiny but powerful influance on our home. This book led me to discover the life saving benifits of minerals. it is simply a good good read.there are NO chemicals used in our garden or home thanks to secrets of the soil. it's a shame this book is out of print. it should be required reading in all of the school systems in the world, it's that informative. Best book I have read to date. Rev.Bruce Curtis

I believe this book acheives it 's purpose!
Entertainment... while not knowing entirely what to make of it swallowing my preconceptions gave way to bewilderment and wonder.. There remain many phenomina that sceintific knowledge will never explain. the natural world, the moon, emtions, and sound have many unexamined effects on plants and us. this book explores them all! Purhaps that is what makes the human quest ever scoping new horizons most exiting and meaningful... I went on to read all the biobliograghical citations of interest I could find in libraries. I realized my veiw into this books studies was a drop in the pool.. Many of the reference were old but classic nonetheless. The only reason modern sceince has not delved deeper into the works of these men is there has been of yet no practical way to make money off it! I wholeheartedly recomend this book

Another round of applause for Tompkins & Bird!
BACK IN PRINT!

This is a thoroughly researched book that will astonish you in more ways than one. It is HIGHLY educational, but you won't find any of this valuable information in a standard textbook on soil science, gardening, or whatever.

Some of it might seem a little far-fetched or at least put a little pressure on preconceived beliefs, but the nice thing is, Tomkins & Bird have found a way to present some rather amazing concepts in a take-it-leave it sort of way, because the most assured thing about this book is that you will be inspired with the DESIRE to do SOMETHING no matter how "small" the beneficial act!

While the factual information about mankind's stupidity and carelessness over the last few decades will break your heart all over again, this book offers many different ways for each of us as individuals to help heal the soil - the very foundation of life under our own two feet - and to help heal OURSELVES in the process.

Even if your custodial duties only incude managing your own lawn, a few trees, some flower beds or HEY a little compost pile with kitchen scraps and pulled weeds -- this book will inspire and empower you to begin helping to restore (or at least convince you to stop trying to kill) the vast UNIVERSE of microorganisms which live literally in your own back yard! Given half a chance, these little "buggers" will work hard to produce all the natural chemicals you will ever need to enjoy soft green healthy grass in your lawn, lovely fragrant flowers, nice sturdy and shady trees, and if you're into growing foodstuffs, wonderfully healthy food containing life-giving protoplasm and perfectly cheltated minerals... WOW... and all these things absolutely free of charge!

This book will re-acquaint you with the "lowly" earthworm which is far from being a worthless creature! Ancient peoples who were far more "in tune" with the inner workings of nature and who demonstrated far better common sense than their modern counterparts (us) revered this gentle organism. You will quickly learn the reasons why!

What is all the fuss about "hierloom seed" varieties? It's not just a bunch of sentimental folks who are trying to preserve their grandad's favorite tomato and great grandma's favorite pretty flowers, or who just like collecting a different sort of "antique".

Do you get all upset with WEEDS? Think again. The neat information in this book puts the "we" back into weeds again. It's entirely possible to "make peace with these weeds" and end the bloody war with the use of our backyard chemical weapons. Weeds are visible indicators that our soil needs certain nutrients or minor assistance. If we pay attention, we can learn from them, and they will quietly become less bothersome. Think I'm kidding? No way. And there's much much more!

This book will really change the way you think about the earth as a whole, about the "dirt" under our feet, and about Life in general. And the title is apt, the things you learn are real "secrets" that should no longer be kept secret.

Your Soul will thank you for this read.

A Must Book Even for Non Pilots
I have known Pete Fusco for at least fiften years and can assure you that he speaks and acts exactly as the way he comes across in print. He has a very fertile imagination and a mind that must contain a repertoire of at least 1,000 jokes, an one of which he may unleash at any time on an unsuspecting public.

This is a tremendous book-a fun book to read and one that I put on a par with Confedracy of Dunces, which won a Pulitzer Prize. Ir is a must book for anyone who desires to look at life through the eyes of someone who sees the lighter side of humanity in whatever he does and is willing to make fun of himself in doing so.

Pete, if you are reading this review I want you to know that I didn't die and am very much alive. You keep me that way with your humor. You are one hell of a funny guy.

A Very Funny Book
Ordinarily, I don't like books written by pilots. When Pete Fusco's book was recommended to me, however, I was interested since I also grew up in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio at about the same time Pete did.

When the book arrived, I must tell you that I was immensely pleased. His book is very well written and describes an odyssey in civilian aviation which is humorous, poignant and entertaining.

I'm a commercial airline pilot who was schooled in aviation via the United States Navy flying fighters during the Viet Nam War. I didn't have to go through many of the experiences which Pete Fusco did (although nobody ever fired missiles at him!). But his experiences related in the book kept me spellbound and laughing until I finished it which was on the same day it was delivered. Well, actually, it was at three in the morning on the day after.

If you enjoy good books about flying and learning to fly, don't pass this one up. It's well worth the price.

Bruce J. Blue The Woodlands, Texas

To one of the best co-pilots I flew with
Pete Fusco and I flew together for several years and the stories he relates in his book are just a few of the real great tales of non-sched cargo days. Pete did not disappoint me. He has always been the best storyteller around. For aviation affectionados that think flying is a gravy train, they need to read this book about what a flying career is all about. Great book! I can't wait for his encore.

A great drug for all fishaholics!
A great read for anyone who understands great passion in the sport of fishing. What a priveledge it is for all of us to experience a month long fly-fishing adventure at Montauk through the skilled prose of Peter Kaminsky. This book reads as deliciously as Peters' recepies sound for fresh grilled Striped Bass accompanied by a burst of just ripe local vegetables...... Pardon me, as I have to go "Blitz" the kitchen right about now!

captivating
what a marvelous book. more than any book i have read on fishing or outdoors, this one is well written. it captures the feelings of the changing of seasons and the hope and dread of how things will be that day. are there fish still in area or have they moved out. what will today bring. one learns a lot about fishing and life and the passion one can have for something. at same time it is not obvious or heavy-handed with some zen philosophy or fishing as allegory. ultimately it is about the love of fishing with a fly rod and sharing that with a few other friends who have the same feelings. while reading this gem of a book, one learns a lot about fishing. i live on the east end of long island but i didnt really know the areas he talked about and the history of some of them. the author really makes the region and the people come alive. it is like you are having breakfast in the local "greasy spoon" with the guys who fish and talk about it. you can see the guys with the bedraggled looks while they try to glean some info on where action is without giving away any of their own secrets. you can see the birds working the water and feel the hard tug. you can also feel the days where nothing working/nothing happening but it isnt dissappointing. the possibilty is almost enough ....but not quite. i have only fished for stripers once with a fly rod but after i read this book i made arrangements to go out to montauk area to try it. if it is 1/4 quarter as good as the author makes it out to be, it will be well worth it.

A must read if you flyfish for stripers.
If you have ever caught a striper on a flyrod you will enjoy Kaminsky's Month of fishing. He has a calm manner of expressing the explosive nature of the striper. He has shared his experiences during the annual run of stripers around Montauk Point. There are plenty of technical manuals of how to do this or where to do that regarding flyfishing for stripers and this isn't one of them. Yet, you can learn from his first hand experiences fishing, not guiding but the actual art of going to the waters in pursuit of the striper. Wheter he is fishing the flats, shores or from a boat his descriptions of his experience are what make this book. The names of his associates have faded but the places he fished, the techniques of casting and presentation, and the fights he described remain. If you enjoy flyfishing for striper you will enjoy the moments of time he selectively shares with his readers.

Very ,Very , Very COOL!!!!
I thought this was a very cool book! Why? Because of how Peter Lerangis (the author) gets you into the book I mean I keept wishing for everything to work out and I would get angry or worried or sad. In it Adam a kid finds something he can use that might save his long dead friend. How does it work? What is it? What the heck am I talking about? Well, read and find out for yourselves! :)

THIS BOOK IS THE BOM
This book is very very good. I liked it because the kid in the store can travel back in time in some way.I let my friend read it and he thought it was the bom.It is about a boy who found a camra that when he looks through it he can see the past.So he tries to save a frien and he did save something else but I won't tell you what. You have to read the book to find out who he saves, why and what thing he saves. This book is the best one in the seires that I have read.

Watchers Rewind... Back to a Past that CAN be changed...
Before I was given this book, it was like pulling teeth to get me to read. After beginning this book, I REALLY could not put it down. I just had to turn another page. And another. And another. It was almost like participating in a soccer game where you just don't know what's going to happen next. I was caught reading this book in class at school. The teacher thought it was so cool that I was so involved in the book, that she actually GAVE me the book! She had never seen me like that, she couldn't believe I was actually reading. Really I couldn't believe it myself!
THIS IS A GOTTA READ BOOK!

Murder Must Advertise
Published in Textbook Binding by G K Hall & Co (1980)
Author: Dorothy Leigh Sayers
Amazon base price: $15.95
Used price: $14.55
Average review score:

Vintage Sayers, a great intro to the Peter Wimsey books
This is the best Wimsey book not featuring sometime-fellow-sleuth Harriet Vane which Sayers ever wrote. Not terribly serious, but great entertainment. I've read this book 6 times because it's just so much fun. Written in 1933, IMHO Sayers' prime, Wimsey is far more human and less of a caricature than in the early books, but much less goopy than in her latest books. The dialogue is a treat, even minor characters are exquisitely drawn, and the in-jokes at the advertising biz (Sayers worked as a copywriter herself for a while) are utterly hilarious. Plus, there's a puzzling, neatly-solved mystery. And even though I don't play cricket and don't understand the game, I adored the pivotal cricket game scene: Sayers at her best. My only complaint is the total absence of the delightful Bunter. THis is definitely the book to read first if you'r e interested in Sayers. Then read the Strong Poison-Have His Carcase-Gaudy Night trilogy. These are, IMHO, her four best books, and of the four, Murder Must Advertise is definitely the most charming and light-hearted.

Whimsical murder mystery at its best
Victor Dean worked at an advertising agency in London. Then Victor Dean died at an advertising agency in London. Accident? Murder? That's what Lord Peter Wimsey is asked to find out.

Shortly after Dean's death, he is replaced by copywriter Death Bredon. That's pronounced "Deeth", by the way. Bredon soon gets down to the business of writing copy ads. We find out that Victor Dean fell down a steep flight of stairs, that he had fought with various members of the ad agency, that when you are advertising for margerine you shouldn't mention butter, and that if you write 'from' instead of 'with' you will cause your client a great deal of anguish. We also discover that something fishy is going on at Pym's Advertising Agency, which somehow ties in with London's thriving cocaine smuggling industry. Soon we're wrapped up in advertising slogans, tea and cake costs, catapult snatching, Whiffling Round Britain, Harlequins in trees, cricket games, and that unfortunate incident where Mr. Death Bredon runs into Lord Peter Wimsey. This is one of Dorothy Sayer's most entertaining, amusing mysteries featuring Peter Wimsey.

Sayers Best Murder
Tightly written and featuring Sayers' gentlemanly sleuth Lord Peter Wimsey at his self-mocking best, Murder Must Advertise is generally regarded as Sayers' finest work in the genre. Several of Sayers murder mysteries--most notably Gaudy Night--achieve much of their effect via unusual settings and atmosphere, and Murder Must Advertise presents us with a mystery set in a 1930s advertising agency, a circumstance that not only gives the reader insight into a world that the author knew first-hand, but allows Sayers to satirize the business of advertising itself. Charming, witty, peopled with interesting characters doing interesting things, and thoroughly fun to read.

Great Book
This is a wonderful book for anyone who's quit smoking and doesn't understand the cravings, the desire to start up again, the feelings of emptiness, loss, etc... Some of the presumptions made, such as it's ok to be in "slippery" situations-you're always in control of your mind and body, I disagree with, but other than that it's a great book. I highly recommend it as it's easy to read and comprehend. Very 12-step oriented.

Personal Support Group In My Pocket.
I quit smoking!

I kept "Out of the Ashes" with me everyday for my first month. Every time I craved a cig I read a page from this lovely pocket support gem and I made it without smoking each time.

Anyone thinking about quitting, or just beginning their quit, will find this book worth having around.

It's short caring and considerate pages are helpful in ways that cannot be measured.

If you smoke -- Buy this book. It is worth every dime and then some.

Out of Ashes
This is an excellent resource for folks who have stopped smoking or are planning to stop. There are absolutely no do's and don'ts (no nagging). This is a portable book that can be taken with you everywhere for excellent motivational tips. I take it to work, school, and read a couple pages before bed. This is not a preachy type book thats what makes it so nice, it's written by two people who have stopped smoking for today. I highly recommend this book!

The best book I've read on this subject by far.
Dr. Whybrow is amazing. He's a good writer (most doctors are not!) and clearly cares deeply about both his patients and his readers. He conveys an enormous amount of information about the workings of the brain, well and otherwise, in an engaging style. He also provides the only remotely plausible explanation of how ECT works that I've ever read. I have those sticky-tab note-things porcupining out from nearly every page, to be referred to again and again.

A Mood Apart in Paperback
"A Mood Apart: The Thinker's Guide to Emotion and Its Disorders" is not a new title from Dr. Whybrow who is one of the leading researchers in depressive, manic depressive, and mood disorders. This book is the paperback version of his 1997 hardback "A Mood Apart: Depression, Mania, and Other Afflictions of the Self". Please do not be confused into thinking this 1998 publication date is a brand new work like I did. This book still rates a 10 for content, information, & diversity. Maury Schiowitz

Moving
If someone were to ask me, "What scientist, by nature of their perspective, could ever understand the depths of humanity?" - I would pluck this book from my shelf and hand it to them. Whybrow truly investigates the subjective and the objective aspects of 'mood disorders' (in the clinical sense) and, by way of dialogue, synthesizes the two approaches into a singular perspective. He explores the emotional continuum - from mania to melancholia - in such a clear and concise fashion that anyone (scientist or humanist) can acquire knowledge, as well as wisdom, through Whybrow's book, A Mood Apart.
