The Dividend Investor: A Safe and Sure Way to Beat the Market with High-Yield Dividend Stocks
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Professional (1995)
Authors: Harvey C., Iii Knowles and Damon H. Petty
Amazon base price: $24.95
Used price: $18.95

At last, a reasonable "how-to" investment book.
Most investors want a simple formula for making reasonable gains in the stock market. The authors have done just that. Early in the book they tell you what their five simple steps are (in one paragraph) then proceed to explain why their method works. My only criticism is that the book is 1/3 text and 2/3 performance tables backing up their research. Does dividend investing work? My stock portfolio has beaten the S&P 500 for the last 2 years since I began using their technique.

Dreamkeepers: A Spirit-Journey into Aboriginal Australia

Arden has a remarkable gift for presenting native wisdom
Dealing with the mysteries of communities other than our own is a delicate matter. Beyond the more obvious impediments to clear understanding such as language, there lies a world of hidden signs and meanings that only reveal themselves slowly, and only then to the sure-footed. Castaneda has written about such experiences, and others have tried with varying degrees of success. Harvey Arden has, all in all, written a remarkable book about the Australian aborigine and his attempt to find a means of expression after the drab interlude of cultural effacement that followed colonisation.

Are we really surprised that these folk have voices of their own? Some of the more remarkable native or aboriginal people of the late twentieth century, are former alcoholics and derelicts. Seen in another life, just a few years ago, most of Western humanity would have found it degrading to even go near them. And yet these were just superficial aspects of the person, which can be seen past if the intention to look is there. Mr. Arden is such a seeker, obviously. I remember thinking at the time I read "The Dreamkeepers," what an amazing thing it was for this to have been written by an American visitor to Australia. The author seemed to have such a grasp of the people and their environment that I felt, surely it must have taken a local writer to develop this degree of understanding. But no, relative stranger to Australia that he was, Mr. Arden had the human touch required and succeeded where, in my opinion, few others would have. This is a fine book and yet another that does not deserve, at all, to be out of print.

Alone and penniless, Emma didn't have much to live for-until she met Simon Charles. It was he who forced her to get a grip on life.

In return he expected Emma to travel with him as his "female attachement," a sort of cover for some mysterious business he was involved in.

Edward Thomas and similar poets: poetic treasures to find !
This book is a very worthwhile companion volume to another recent book by Anne Harvey, "Adlestrop Revisited: an Anthology Inspired by Edward Thomas's Poem" (1999). Notable among the poets/"elected friends" are: Eleanor Farjeon (friend and literary adviser of Edward Thomas, and author of "Morning Has Broken" - set to the music of the traditional Irish hymn "St Patrick's Breastplate" and popularised in the 1970s by Cat Stevens); Other poets such as Ivor Gurney, Walter John De La Mare and William Henry Davies and Robert Frost, to name a few. "Elected Friends" is a book to be treasured and frequently "dipped into".

The Encyclopedia of Flower Remedies: The Healing Power of Flowers Essences from Around the World
Published in Paperback by Thorsons Pub (1995)
Authors: Clare G. Harvey and Amanda Cochrane
Amazon base price: $24.00
Used price: $29.95
Average review score:

The most wonderful and comprehensive book on flower remedies
I bought this book some 5 years ago and I can not understand why this book is out of print. It was only published 6 years ago and is the most wonderfully written and referenced book on most of the flower essences, other than Bach (which is included) which are available today.

It is a wonderfully complete, thick and lovely set out work. As an aesthetic sort of person I love the print, the paper and the look and feel of the book. I luckily found it in a general bookstore here in Melbourne Australia (Angus and Robertson) for [a]great price ...

There are some lovely photos of different flower essences which add to the desirability of the book in my opinion. There are chapters (which make up the bulk of the book) on different countries and the main flower essence producers in each place. Then there is a reference guide concerning physical, emotional and spiritual issues you wish to heal and the flower essences to be used.

I love her recipe section Clare (one cool lady, would love to meet her!) has suggestions for different problems, like a clearing of anaesthetics out of the body mix, jet lag mix, face cream using flower essences, radiation mix good for radiographers, etc.

The book is so full of everything someone into flower essences would need it is my bible. I'm only sad that it is no longer published and trying to find secondhand copies is near to none!

Great work Clare & Amanda, you've done a brilliant job!
