Revealing, inspiring, and challenging
"Jesus The Same" has opened my eyes to see more clearly the attributes of my Lord. Jefferson is able to poignantly paint a biblically-based "portrait" of the traits of Jesus Christ. During my reading of the book, I was inspired to deepen my love for God as I have come to be more impressed than ever of who Jesus really was.

An inspirational look into the character of Jesus Christ
Jesus the Same is an incredible study of the character of Jesus that challenges all Christians to imitate his example. Originally the chapters were individual sermons preached in the early 1900's and released under the title The Character of Jesus. However, the message never grows old. I plan on reading it again. It is filled with insight and references to Scripture. This is a must read for every disciple of Christ.

Excellent devotional companion
This book provides some unprecedented insight into the various characteristics found during the life of Jesus. This is significant to all christians because this is the one who we are ultimately trying to imitate. The author presents many common trials that many people face and describes how Jesus viewed the same type of situation. Many of these explanations can be very radical by presenting original conclusions, and are usually very inspiring as well. This book has had a deep impact on the way that I viewed Jesus as well as my own life.

A M U S T R E A D !
I'm a minister of music at an evangelical church. Almost every week, I have the conversation with someone "what are the role of emotions in our services and in the Christian's life in general?" (Nobody really asks it THAT way, but you get the idea.)

I've come to the point where I won't even begin the conversation without having them read this book. Seriously! Edwards covers ALL the issues in a thurough and practical way.

Strap on your thinking cap, but know it's worth it! I read this book every year and God never fails in using it to refocus my heart on Him.

Defines the term "spiritual classic"
Houston's abridgement and editing have led to this one effect among others: Reading the book itself becomes a spiritual experience. We become examined, humbled, then excited and inspired. These are the questions Edwards' explores: What are the roles of the affections (i.e., emotions) for a Christian? How do we know they are genuinely from God's grace? In answering this he points to the beauty of God's holiness itself--a concept rarely seen in Protestant literature and rarely seen at all between the Middle Ages and von Balthasar. Another important concept is that the presence of the Holy Spirit within a believer provides a "new sense" to add to the 5 senses. Edwards' elucidation of the scripture's view on the affections/emotions is worth the price of the book alone.

good God makes man happy
no wonder many consider edwards north america's greatest thinker. like his other works, this volume is priceless. he brilliantly delves into the human psyche, exposing man's emotional needs and their fulfilment in God.

Revealing Riches and Building Lives: Youth Choir Ministry in the New Millenium
Published in Hardcover by Morning Star Music Pub (2000)
Author: Randy Edwards
Amazon base price: $42.50

An Outstanding Book!
It is not surprising that Randy Edwards has put together the most comprehensive, relevant single text on youth choirs available today. It is hard to imagine any youth choir director not reading this book! The philosophy and ideas shared meet directors wherever they might find themselves. Whether a seasoned veteran or a beginning director, the reader walks away with renewed passion for reaching and teaching teenagers in the choral setting. The book is also recommended for student ministers or others who work with teenagers. My most pleasant surprise came in the book's numerable indices and applicable resources. From repertoire lists, helpful and inspirational movies and web sites, to "ready to use" formats such as a tour counselor do's and don'ts, these helpful resources add up to many hours of research and work that will be an immediate help to many directors, educators, and all who have a passion to influence the lives of teenagers.

Simply the BEST!
"Revealing Riches and Building Lives" by Randy Edwards is, in my opinion, the most comprehensive text on current trends and developments in the area of youth choir ministry. More than that, the book is a great inspiration and motivational tool if a director has "lost the edge." The book also confirms and reminds directors of what it is really all about--meeting kids where they are and dreaming with them about ways they can grow into the person God intends them to be. Whether a director is starting for the first time, starting over, or starting to wear out, she (or he) can find great value in the words and concepts in this book. When reading the book there is a sense that you are not only listening to the writings of the foremost authority on this subject, but also to someone who is genuinely passionate about what he is talking about.

Revealing Riches and Building Lives
This is the quintessential book for anyone working with youth choirs. Randy has thoroughly covered all aspects of working with youth today. There is an exhaustive list of references that helps directors choose music and search further into the fascinating experience of youth choirs. This book should be, not just on the shelf, but in the hands of anyone who wants to make an impact in the lives of youth through music ministry.

In My Top Ten All-Time Favorite Theological Works
This Hendrickson edition is a remake of the Banner of Truth Edition from 1984 (a 2 Vol. Set). All of the works of Edwards are included.

In this work Edwards' memoirs, sermons, theological treatises, miscellaneous discourses, and short observations are included. Everything and anything written by Edwards (including his most famous works and the lesser known short works) are present. This is the ultimate primary text to own from Edwards.

Brace yourself. Edwards can write some of the most simplistic theological thoughts and some of the most complicated theological thoughts and have one follow the other in a single paragraph. This volume will fill your days with hours of great reading, most of which you will have to reread, and then read again to get a grasp of what Edwards is trying to say. There are certain works, herein, that I have read a dozen times and have yet to fully grasp what Edwards is communicating (though that is no cause to ever stop trying).

Edwards discusses issues such as the human will, freedom, predestination, the attributes of God, sin, original sin, salvation, the Church, marriage, love, time, etc. Even topics that one would never give much thought to, such as indetermination, are included in these pages. Edwards has a way with words that can often times be staggering - to think that someone could write in such a manner. If you are wanting to read Edwards' works then here they are all in one text. But I must warn you that these pages will change your thinking and your life forever!

The Mount Everset of Theology!
Martyn Lloyd-Jones said that he was "tempted, perhaps foolishly, to compare the Puritans to the Alps, Luther and Calvin to the Himalayas, and Jonathan Edwards to Mount Everest!" (The Puritans: Their Origins and Successors, p. 355). I concur. Nothing in my library holds such a storehouse of wealth, as do these two hefty tomes. Edwards was a brilliant theologian, a zealous evangelist, an astute philosopher, a warm hearted pastor, and an eye-witness (and one of the primary instruments causing) the first Great Awakening. If you want theology at its richest go to Edwards' "End for Which God Created the World." IF you want a passion for souls, read his "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God." If you are interested in well-articulated philosophy at its finest, peruse "The Nature of True Virtue." If you want biography geared to cultivate godliness in your own heart, read "The Life of David Brainerd." If you want pastoral counsel concerning the state of your soul, you will find nothing better than "The Religious Affections." And if you want to know what a REAL revival looks like, study "A Narrative of Surprising Conversions." (And those works are less than half of what is in here!) If my house were burning, I would probably grab for these two books second only to the Bible. To get Edwards is to get theology. So get Edwards!

Nothing More Valuable to a Christian
This is perhaps the most valuable set of books you will ever buy as a Christian. Jonathan Edwards' breathtaking analysis of the things of God will sweep you off of your feet. I have come to this set of books time and time again for insight, profound reflection, and personal renewal. I would challenge you to read the works of Jonathan Edwards, especially if you are an Arminian. Edwards presents the absolute sovereignty of God with impeccable clarity, logic and argument. If read in faith, you will never be the same. Be sure to get this Banner of Truth set, as the Yale set is far too costly.

A promising beginning
This first in a series entitled "The Chronicles of the Door" deals with creation and original sin from the viewpoint of the angels. It's a clever premise, and well carried out. The author's great reverence for God shines through. Through the fall of man, the close "hands-on" relationship with God and Heaven is closed off, but the foreshadowing for redemption is evident. In the epilogue, God calls out to Abram, who will of course become Abraham. At that point, I went back to Amazon.com and bought the rest of the series! I recommend The Beginning because it makes one reflect on the magnitude of sin and how it grieves God. The cost of our disobedience is something rarely preached in church. Churches more and more preach on God's love and all the positive things, and try to avoid the controversy of dealing with sin and Satan. This book will cause you to consider the importance of your day-to-day choices.

A vivid and emotional descriptive of the Garden of Eden
As an ex-jock I'm not a real guy, but I wept like I had not wept in 20 years as I read Gene Edwards description of Adam meeting God. I wept when I read of Adam meeting his bride Eve. I wept at the tenderness with which God clothed his Children and sent them from the Garden. Although The Beginning is fiction, Gene Edwards has used Biblical truth to vividly and emotionally describe the events of the beginning of the world. If you have doubts of the glory and honor that it is to be a child of God you must read this book!

From a married but non-blended family perspective
Having the opportunity to pre-review this book prior to release, and being married with two children in a non-blended family I wondered how the book could benefit me and my household.

I found it easy to read with personal testimonies that any family can relate to and learn from. I walked away from the book being more thankful for the things I have, and I acquired a stronger commitment to keep my household intact.

I would like to thank the authors of this book for making my husband and I "Renew our marriage vows"

TOP 10 things we liked about your book!
Salvation/Christ focused messages, encourages married couples to stay together/grow stronger, your personal testimonies, written from a realistic and christ centered perspective, targeted specific issues such as finances, discipline, names, visitation, respect, etc., information helpful, applicable and true, not too long, gets the message across clearly, and husband and wife perspectives and input. This book can give anyone married, single, remarried, or engaged a biblical view and understanding of what Christ wants to do in our homes. The authors do an exceptional job at directing the reader to God's plan and provision for marriage and family. Their personal experiences are a testimony to what God can do if we let Him. THE BLENDED FAMILY encourages trust in Christ and the word of God as the blueprint for building a strong family. A must read for anyone in or about to become a blended family.

More interesting than the fictional accounts
This book is a collection of early documents relating to Fletcher Christian's mutiny against William Bligh in 1789 on the HMS Bounty. The editor claims to have gathered together for the first time "the relevant texts and documents" related to this famous event that has intrigued readers for 200 years. In all, ten documents whose publication dates range from 1790 to 1870 are included. The first four documents make up the body of the book and consist of a series of published statements by William Blight and responses by Edward Christian, Fletcher's brother. Fletcher Christian died on Pitcairn Island and never put his story in print. These four sections are followed by six Appendixes. The first Appendix contains a transcript of Bligh's orders and a botanical description of the breadfruit that the Bounty went to Tahiti to obtain. The remaining five Appendixes are narratives of the lives of those who stayed on the Bounty after the mutiny.

All of these early texts are preceded by a delightful and informative Introduction by the editor that relates the early lives of both Bligh and Christian and discusses their relationship leading up to the mutiny. It describes the mission of the Pandora to seek out the Bounty and bring back any mutineers they can find. Also covered is the trial and disposition of those sailors brought back from Tahiti. Lastly, the Introduction goes on to summarize the history of Bounty documentation and scholarship, from Bligh's first published account right on through the famous fictionalized Bounty trilogy by Nordhoff and Hall. The Introduction is followed by a one page listing of suggested further readings.

The first section of the book is Bligh's 1790 account of the mutiny and subsequent voyage of he and 18 crew members in the ship's 23 foot boat. He quickly recounts the details of the mutiny on the first four pages and then spends the remaining 62 pages on his heroic and epic voyage across 3,600 miles of the South Pacific that took about a month and a half. Bligh depicts himself as a dedicated leader who saved the lives of all but one crew member in this fascinating and arduous journey.

The second section of the book is the proceedings of the court martial of those brought back to face charges of mutiny, published in 1794 by Edward Christian in an attempt to exonerate his brother. This text consists of a written statement by Bligh, a series of interrogations of the Bounty crew regarding the events of the mutiny, and an Appendix by Edward. A picture of Bligh as a tyrant emerges from this testimony. It is 86 pages long and somewhat repetitive, but still an interesting document to read. The 20 page Appendix at the end of is Edward Christian's attempt to show that his brother had cause for his actions. Although he does not try to justify his brother's actions, he tries to show the state of desperation that his brother was driven to by Bligh's actions. Bligh was at sea when this was published and, when he returned home, he published in 1795 "An Answer..." to the statements of the Appendix which is included as the third section of this book. To this Edward Christian wrote and published a "Short Reply..." that is the fourth section of this book. This interchange in writing between Bligh and Edward Christian is wonderful to read because it presents both sides of the story in a very balanced and fair manner. Without having Fletcher Christian to defend his own actions, this set of documents is the next best thing we have to a fair presentation of both sides of the case.

The above documents alone would have made a wonderful and enlightening book. The editor goes on to present in the Appendixes documents that tell the story of those men who followed Fletcher Christian to Tahiti or Pitcairn Island. The first Appendix is a copy of Bligh's orders to go to Tahiti and a description of the breadfruit he was to bring to Jamaica. The second Appendix is an 1870 retelling of a journal kept by one of the sailors who was taken by the Pandora from Tahiti as a mutineer. It tells of the harsh treatment these 14 received aboard this ship and how four died when the ship sank. The next two Appendixes are accounts written by crew members of a ship that visited Pitcairn Island 19 years after the mutiny in 1808. They tell the story of the crew that landed there with Fletcher Christian and their history and families. By this time only one of the nine members of the original Bounty crew that landed on the island remained alive. The last two Appendixes are the story of one of the Tahitian women who married a Bounty crew member and the story of the last surviving crew member himself.

Altogether these various documents pieced together tell what we can know of the Bounty mutiny. They make fascinating reading, more interesting than the fictional accounts. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in tales of the sea.

An Amazing Book
What an amazing book. Using the original source materials--Bligh's diary, the transcript of the Bounty Court Martial, Fletcher Christian's brother's defense of the mutineers, and other materials--the Editor R.D. Madison has put together a book which is impossible to put down. Indeed, the book leaves the reader wishing it were twice as long. Madison refuses to take sides in the Bligh v. Christian debate, and lets the record speak for itself. Since the record is contradictory and nobody is unbiased, the effect, in cinematic terms, is more like "Roshomon" than either of the two Bounty movies. William Bligh comes across as an incredibly brave man with an indomitable will--yet he has a tendency to whine, and worse, he stoops to securing affidavits which do not even pass the smell test. Fletcher Christian comes across as a 23-year old hothead who lets the men talk him into leading a mutiny--and can't control the situation after the mutiny. Christian petulantly refuses to have dinner with the Captain on the eve of the mutiny. Clark Gable, he clearly ain't. The moral world of the Bounty is painted entirely in shades of gray; the men of the Bounty are imperfect and all too human.

Not only is the reader treated to a great detective story, but it is a story with an absorbing and instructive sequel. The book ends with a contemporary account, first published in the 1830's, of the subsequent history of Pitcairn's Island as told by the last survivor of the Bounty, "John Adams" (an alias). Adams described a harrowing descent into mayhem and murder by the mutineers who made it to Pitcairn's Island along with their native friends. The disputes began with a dispute over--you guessed it--who would possess a native woman. Except for Adams, Fletcher Christian his gang were all killed, along with the native men. In the end, John Adams sets up a harmonious society based on Biblical principles.

I have been scratching my head for two whole weeks since finishing this book, pondering its meaning. And that is a high recommendation, indeed.

A MUST READ FOR ANYONE WHO HAS HEARD THE CALL OF GOD
I cannot encourage pastors, ministers, and laity alike who have heard and answered the call of God for their life to read this book. In it you will find wisdom for what God has intended for your life. Many don't understand that the depth and breadth of the call comes once you answer it. But on the way to "being" what God has called you to be, He must prepare you "to do" what it is He's called you to do. If you have ever had questions about the process and timing (the swiftness or delay) of fulfilling your call, or think you are ready to "run" with the call upon your life, you should read this book. Every church should use this text as a tool to equip saints for the work of the ministry.

A must have for new ministers.
This book should be highly recommended from every pastor that has a newly called minister on his staff. Jefferson Edwards shares five very important points with the new minister. 1. What is involved in the call of God 2. The processing of the called 3. The New Testament process in relation to the Old Testament process 4. The priesthood-God's first orders of ministry 5. The call to his glory and anointing

I know this will be a blessing to any minister!

Bless Your Spirit Rev. Matt Yarbrough, Jr.

A gentle but powerful nudge
As stated in the preface, acts of kindness need not be elaberate or planned. This small book is a treasure trove of esperiences of kindness, given and received. Some are big, like a complete christmas provided for a family down on its luck. Some are small, like not hitting back. It is a reminder that we all have the capacity to reach out. I took this book to church with me, in case the services got too boring. I read it, my kids read it , and I have since reread it several times since. A gentle nudge towards becomming a kinder person.

beautiful reminder
This small book made an important difference in my life. Example after example of people being kind to each other penetrated and softened my pressured, irritated heart, and made me a better person. It reminded me of something crucially important, something I had forgotten. And how wonderful to be reminded. When I began to put kindness and love into practice, the world transformed from something dull and disappointing into something beautiful and sweet. This is a book about the most important thing in the world.
