This book is not one of Gene's better ones
While very convincing and moving in its presentation, this book contains ideas that could have potentially damaging effects on a believer's life. I was so distraught after seeing the effects that this line of thinking had among some believers that I know that I took my copy out and burned it. Don't waste your money.

If you're going through hell, then this book is for you.
In this book, Gene sheds a lot of light on the area of suffering. Though not all of it is meant to be taken literally, Gene writes from the perspective of an elderly Christian who is reflecting back on his life. Gene show us how God uses suffering to mold us into his perfect vessel. I suggest this book to anyone who is having a hard time and does not know why.

For anyone who has experienced difficulty
This book is a must for anyone who has gone through hard times. Gene Edwards provides a revealing look at the eternal perspective of life and it's struggles in this beautifully written book. It is a read I will never forget.

Historically accurate, but repeats Death of a King
I read Death of a King several years ago and really enjoyed it, so I had high hopes here. Unfortunately Doherty repeated the same plot - granted, with a different king - but still essentially the same. This disappointed enough that I am not eager to read more of his work. If you haven't read either, I think Death of a King is the better book.

The book is historically accurate, which is important to me. Doherty clearly knows his English history. I like the idea of "completing" Chaucer's tales. It does add to the story if you know the tales, but if you don't I think you can sort the characters out. I would encourage people who enjoyed this book to take a look at Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. They can be a bit difficult, because of the language, but there is a reason they are an English Classic.

MEDIEVAL ESPIONAGE
This is another installment in the Chaucer pilgrim tales. This is the tale told by the Lawyer. The Lawyer tells a tale of Nicholas Chirke who is hired by the Sheriff to find out who killed a man named Berisford and save the man named Fromlich who is being framed for the killing.

This tale was at first confusing with the amount of names being thrown about, but that subsided and it became a wonderful story full of greed, espionage, mystery, wanton women and of course murder. Not only is it a good tale, but you get to go back in time and dwell for a while in 14th century England. Enjoy your stay.

Loaded With Action
This book is loaded with action and it is fun to read. Doherty has a doctorate in history from Oxford and obviously loves his subject.

Very hard to read, even for the intelligent
Unfortunately, Adams is not very clear on many of his statements. It makes for long, boring reading - certainly not an encouragement when you have to read it for class!

COMPETENT TO COUNSEL
I RECIEVED THIS BOOK AS A STUDY MANUEL FOR SCHOOL, JAY ADAMS IS A POWERFUL WRITER WHO EXPLAINS IN EVERYDAY TERMS HOW TO COUNSEL THROUGH THE EYES OF A BELIEVER IN CHRIST. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO EVERYONE WHO HAS A HEART TO HELP OTHERS FIND WHO CHRIST MADE THEM TO BE

If you're a web newbie - this book is for you!
I finished _Christians in a .com World_ this week. The first part would be good for anyone not familiar with the net or who was vaguely familiar. I'm glad I read it, though I found it pretty dull, because it helped to put a historical context around some events and information that I already knew. The last part was good, though. It discussed how Christians could use the web for good and to re-introduce Christ and theology into modern culture and conversation. It also discussed how Christians should not use the web and reminded us that we should avoid temptations on the web as we do in our everyday - that we should set boundaries that police ourselves and our children. In other words - use discernment.

So, for you web-savvy folk who aren't interested too much in what e-mail is, the history of the computer, thoughts about community on the web (both the positives, the pitfalls, and the posibility of solitude), and the history of the web, I recommend that you definitely skip to Chapter 5 and read the discussions on the good and bad of the net and that you possibly skip all the way to the concluding section of Christianity Online. It seems a shame that a discussion of Christians in a .com World has to wait until the very last 32 pages to speak on that topic.

My final thoughts? Excellent tool for someone who knows little to nothing about computers or the web, kind of dull for someone who does.

Great Summary!
Mr. Veith and Mr. Stamper do an excellent job of summarizing the cyber age and how it affects the Christian. If you haven't read their work in WORLD Magazine or other volumes, you are in for a real treat, as well as a strong challenge on the use of this developing technology for the cause of Christ.

A look at the cross
This book is a collection of writings from the Roman Catholics Francois Fenelon, Michael Molinos, and Madame Guyon. It's good, deep stuff dealing on the topics of the cross and prayer. The writings are not broken into a "daily devotional" format as the title may lead one to believe, but the book can be read in such a way since it is broken down into "small bits."

The book has three sections: Way of the Cross, Drawing Inward, and Stepping Into His Presence. Within each section, each "author" is given about ten small chapters (usually no more than a couple pages).

Most of Guyon's writings come from the SeedSower's book edited by Edwards called, Experiencing The Depths of Jesus Chrsit Through Prayer, so buying this book will offer nothing new from Guyon if you already have the other book. I'm guessing that the writings from Molinos comes from his, The Spiritual Guide.

There is very little scripture in this book, but what is taught is very, very good (of course, not everyone may agree with what is written). The chapters deal with the cross, suffering, real prayer, inward prayer, silence, meditation on scripture, listening to God, knowing God, love, and beholding the Lord, among others.

The book also includes short biographies of the three authors.

This is a basic refernce for the Anglican Church. It has interesting background informaton on each of the dioceses listed, including things like population, number of Anglicans and Christians in the country, and basic maps of where every diocese is located. It also has a brief request from each bishop of an intention to pray for for each diocese.

Warm reflection on Celtic Faith and Spiritual Formation
Sellner provides an overview of the Celtic Christian world and Soul Friends in particular. Even though the title is "The Celtic Soul Friend," the topic of soul friends only recieves focused in attention in the last chapter. The rest of the book is primarily an introduction to Celtic Spirituality from Sellner's point of view. Sellner's approach is between academic and devotional but he leans toward the devotional. Thus the book avoids addressing many of the critical arguments surrounding the historicity of Celtic Spirituality. In spite of the sparse treatment of soul friends, the book still has merit, presenting a vision of soul friends that is beyond simply glorified mentors to a dynamic of relationship that flows in both directions.

A Calvinist w/some stimulating thoughts
The author appears to be yet another who teaches Calvinism (aka "false doctrine"), although he does stimulate thought. However, I am finding the book has so many seemingly internal condradictions that it is difficult to read. Many of his thoughts are biblical. Many are not biblical. I do plan to finish it.

Reader beward...

Life changing, excellent analogies, highly recommended.
This is a life changing book. The critical difference for Christians is in how we perceive God. Is He our co-pilot, or is He THE pilot? The book clearly states Mr. Edwards correct position - correct theologically and exigetically! However, I do have one complaint - thereby giving this book a rating of 4. On page 184 he says, "This love communicates loudly and clearly, 'You do not have to change in order to maintain my love for you.'" This statement is fundamentally true. We are commanded to love our neighbor as ourself. However, our prayer and desire is that each person we know DOES change into the new creation God wills them to, through the cleansing blood of Jesus Christ! And not just a basic, one time change. But - as Mr. Edwards has so vividly portrayed in this book - become a person who "disappears" into humility and meekness, as our Lord Jesus demonstrated in His life on earth.

Life-changing
For years I struggled with sin, seemingly unable to live the Christian life. I desired holiness passionately but it seemed impossible. This led to a degree of despair and desperation. By the grace of God, however, I was lifted out of that mire. I actually heard Dwight Edwards speak at a conference and, having done so, bought and read this book. While doing so I had a "The Emperor Has No Clothes" experience. I was amazed to discover that I actually was not a slave to sin. I had never been taught the doctrine of the New Covenant this way and, suffice to say, it has made a tremendous amount of difference in my life.
This book is not powerful because of its sophistication. It is probably at an eighth grade reading level. But the teachings of the New Covenant (see Romans) are presented clearly and they carry a force of their own. I thank God for this book.
