Little Book - Big Impact
This "new classic" (20 years old) is a concise exploration of what it means to be godly and how it is achieved. Since Adams is often criticised for being too 'legalistic,' this is a good book for a grace-oriented care-free guy like myself to spend time reading. It will inform you and encourage you.

A fanciful flights of imagination
A comic and absurd adaptation of one of Andersen's most memorable fairy tales. Gerda, with the help of some stalwart accomplices, must save the young boy Kai before the Ice Queen turns his heart to ice.

Gazsi's illustrations are colored in rich jewel tones. His children appear to be drawn from photographs, and look almost like paper dolls, while his other creatures are fanciful flights of imagination.

The book is written in script form, with portions of the musical score included. An address is given to send off for a complete score and playbook, for those who want to produce the pageant.

An excellent compliation
"The Classics of Western Spirituality" from Paulist Press has been dedicated, over the last twenty years, to producing excellent translations, and this is no exception. The compliation includes a detailed Introduction, the Autobiography, the Spiritual Excerices, and fragments of the Constitutions and the Spiritual Diary. Though it would have benefited from the inclusion of the Formula - an essential document in its own right - this volume provides intelligent translations and crtical explorations into the sometimes-confusing meaning of Ignatius' prose. The selections from the Diary are especially recommended, as they comprise - to my knowledge - the only fragments translated into English, and are thoughtfully printed so as to give the reader a feel for the outlay of the work, scribbled in Ignatius' journal. Highly recommended.

An Introduction to Christian Apologetics: A Philosophic Defense of the Trinitarian-Theistic Faith

Classic Work in History of Apologetics
Carnell was professor at Fuller Seminary from 1948-67.

Carnell put forward a fixed approach, combining the classical approach, underlining the law of contradiction. He defends the proposition that logic must be valid because its denial is self-defeating. On the otherside, he rejected the idea that theism could be deductively proved. Therefore, he challenges Thomism's belief of a deductive approach, and finds that it cannot be validly proved.

Natural knowledge of God's existence doesn't take a person very far, not far enough. Thus, he centers on an evidentialist, experiential approach. Here he latches onto systematic consitency, the lack of internal contradiction coupled with external agreement in one's experience.

He proposed in other works and this that one's apologetic approach should mirror the times, as he stated: "an apologist must play it by ear."

Practical for today
Tilden Edwards, Director the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation, presents in this book the program he uses to help people develop the art of contemplation. His work generally is with groups of people, although many of the exercises in this book can be done by oneself.

This is not a New Age spirituality. Edwards is stepped in the classic Christian spiritualities. Some of the exercises have an Eastern flavor, but the main thrust of the formation program is rooted in western spirituality.

One really should read this book one exercise at a time in order to get an appreciation of the totality of prayer that Edwards presents. While the book seems small, there is a depth of knowledge and experience that takes a while to appreciate.

All of the exercises and reflections in this book are intended to help one to live in the awareness of God. From breathing to sharing reflections, Edwards is not interested in revelation so much as he hopes peope will find in these exercises how God is part of their lives. These exercises are practical for the lives people live today. But the outcome is not "practical" in the sense that Edwards is not looking for "achievement." The only outcome is one's discovery of God. That leads to other things. But then that is grace.

A thought-provoking examination of conversion...
We all know persons whose lives have undergone drastic metamorphoses - sometimes more than once. (Perhaps we ourselves have gone through the process!) Religious conversion, otherwise known as being "born again", is a fascinating phenomenon. This book is a sincere, sympathetic, but objective study of the process. Joe and Mary Ann Barnhart's clearly written volume scrutinizes John Henry Newman, converts to Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church, Charles Colson, Buddha, St. Paul the Apostle, Ernest Renan, and others. The Barnharts suggest "it is a mistake to conclude that the new birth is nothing but a delusion." Neither is it "a supernatural event or process, but a complex personal process with at least three layers or dimensions - the psychological, the social, and the cultural [including] theological and metaphysical doctrines." The authors draw from a refreshingly diverse range of thinkers to deliver insight after insight: John Dewey, Henri Bergson, E. O. Wilson, Victor Frankl, Thomas Szasz, Emile Durkheim, and many others. This short (171 page) book is worth reading and rereading. There is a lot here!

Mentor of many Chaplains, by Chaplain Fred W. Hood
The majority of clinically trained chaplains for 50 years owe a huge debt to Wayne Oates. Since his influence spread through the Clinical Pastoral Education Movement, anyone serving as chaplain is on speaking terms with his 40-50 books & hundreds of articles.

In his preface he clearly states his goal: "The disciplines of nurturing silence are what this book is about." Dr. Oates keeps his constant theme: "discovering your privacy in order to nurture silence is to discover, Ecstasy as an entrancing joy. It means 'to stand outside of oneself or apart from' so that you center down in silence." Then he proceeds to develop those ideas just like he spoke and/or taught in seminary lectures & seminars.

Our beloved mentor, still a gifted imaginative writer draws upon scripture, stories, poetry, philosophy & nature, exactly like he taught Pastoral Psychology & Theology. To catch a short glimmer or taste of his gourmet thoughts, I dare you to risk getting hooked on his deep Wisdom of the Spirit in a sample of Oates!

We should all do some praying!
This book gave me more insight to the meaning of prayer. Prayer is based on faith - the desire, belief and expectancy. The author tell us about the energy of prayer, how and why we must be persistent in prayer, and the results that are possible due to prayer. You can create you own results (miracles) by praying (if you know how and why).

Even if you don't take time to read this book, at least learn to how / when to pray and learn what to expect. God wants to be our friend. He ask us to go to our secret place (inside) and talk with him. Who knows? You might see the miracles (results) in your life if you pray nonstop, giving thanks and praise and "asking (the right way) so you can receive (thy will be done)".
