On Arrom edition of Ramon Pane's Account of the Antiquities
An excellent job of narrating the recovery of lost material from existing documentation. The footnotes are well researched. The topic is fascinating, and the insights of the editors very useful. However, I would have liked to see an additional index with entry using English terms as well as the existing index of Taino words.

In addition, in analysis of a culture so intimately linked and so knowledgeable of nature as the Tainos, one should also take into account biological reality. For instance, it seems clear to a biologist that Mácocael, "he of the lidless eyes:' page 6 of the text may well be the great rainbow boa, Epicrates spp., Ma-ja, the great snake, since this serpent, like most boas, has lidless eyes.

¿Verdad o mentira?

Imperdible

From the "Lonesome Dove" reference shelf
Larry McMurtry once said he based "Lonesome Dove" on a handful of reference books about the Old West. This classic compendium of cowboy terminology first published in 1936 by Ramon Adams is surely one of them. In the chapter on cowboy nicknames, there is told the story of Dishwater Martin, who like Dish Boggett in the novel, got his name by mistaking dishwater for drinking water.

And if you've read "Lonesome Dove" much of the early material in this book will be a little familiar. Adams discusses at length the duties of cowboys on the job in open rangeland, on cattle drives, and on ranches. Their manners, habits, attitudes, and codes of behavior are discussed, especially the close bond between cowboys and their horses. And interwoven through all of this are the words, terms, and phrases borrowed and invented by cowboys, observed and noted by Adams over many years as an amateur lexicographer.

I found the reading got more interesting as Adams explored topics that spilled over into storytelling and something I guess we'd call socio-linguistics today. The chapter on cooks, cooking, food, meal-time etiquette, the chuckwagon itself, and the sharp wit of cooks is especially enjoyable. Adams also makes good reading out of his chapters on cattle rustling, guns, the afore-mentioned nicknames, and (much too briefly) cowboy dances, also known as 'hoe-digs,' 'shin-digs,' 'hoe-downs,' and 'stomps.' I learned square dancing as a boy but never heard calls as arcanely mystifying as the ones Adams records here.

While Adams observes that cowboys were also notoriously profane and wildly inventive in their profanity, the mores of 1936 prevent him from giving any examples. Sad to say, that's the only chapter I have to report as missing from this otherwise entertaining and informative book.

"Cowboy Lingo" is one of those rare reference books you can read for pleasure. It opens a wide and richly detailed window into a uniquely Western world.

"Tie yer Hats to the saddle and let's go!"
Ramon F. Adam's book of Cowboy lingo is a great addition to the growing library of reference books dealing with cowboy culture and the cowboy way of life. This book is great for writers and cowboy enthusiasts alike.

Here's why:

The Author Adam's divides his 'dictionary' into chapters, with specific themes ranging terms for cattle, to nicknames for people. Chapters include the commentary of modern cowboys and the author's own observations. (This is NOT a dictionary in the traditional sense, so don't expect a sterile list of terms with definitions or you might be disappointed). =-) Words and phrases are scattered throughout each chapter in no particular order.

Find out for yourself what the words "Buckaroo," "Fence-Stretcher" and "Talk Turkey" mean.

Saddle up, and prepare yourself for an exciting adventure into the ways and words of a Cowboy life!

Cuentos Completos: Ribeyro (Alfaguara Cuentos Completos)
Published in Paperback by Santillana Pub Co (1998)
Author: Julio Ramon Ribeyro
Amazon base price: $25.95
Used price: $12.00
Average review score:

superb collection
Ribeyro's readers are relatively few, and widely scattered over Europe and the Americas, but what we lack in numbers we make up for in near-religious devotion to his work. One can return again and again to such apparently simple stories as "Por las azoteas", "Los otros", "La primera nevada", and many others included in this collection spanning more than forty years. Nothing really happens in Ribeyro's stories, and maybe that's why his stories are as effective on a first as on a third or even fourth reading. We read them, after all, not to see how the author wraps up a bizarre plot, but to let his stories--by turns nostalgic and ironic--work their magic on us. Reading a Ribeyro story, in short, is like listening to a piece of music that one loves: No matter how often we listen to it, it rarely fails to induce a change of mood, to transmit to us profound emotion.

Wizard of storytelling
Ribeyro is definitely one of the Spanish language all time great storytellers and this book is solid proof. His stories are concerned with the little man. The man that will never be famous, but at one moment must make a decision, vital to his existence. There is never a moment of boredom. This book has literature, entertainment galore and makes easy reading. An important book to have in your library. And you can take my word, since I am a pretty good short story writer myself! Rush and buy it!

Telling it like it is
I read this book years ago, and it is one of those books that stayed in my head. Tinguis Perez writes in simple, direct prose about some harsh situations in the US, the types of situations undocumented immigrants encounter routinely but that few US citizens will encounter at all in the ordinary routine of life. He understates everything, never sensationalizes, and the result is extraordinarily powerful and human.

Translator's review
Libraries are now full of statistical and sociological reports on undocumented or illegal Mexican immigrants in the U.S. This book presents what I believe in the only account in print from the personal experience of one such immigrant. It tells of his crossing the border, his apprehension by the Border Patrol, of a subsequent successful entry, and of the more than two years that Mr. Perez spent in Texas, California and Washington, living with others in his status, trying to catch the American Dream.

Guajiro tale
This tale is not about Mexico, it is about Venezuela. It is a beautiful story that belongs to the native americans from Venezuela. It is sweet and sad at the same time and it has a very nice message. It also has great drawings and very simple text. It is great for people starting to learn Spanish.

El burrito y la tuna
This book is a great book to read to your bilingual classes! It talks about the Tall Tale of how the prickly pear came about in the deserts of Mexico. Your children will love the distinctive illustrations in the book!

Materful story telling -- Very highly recommended
...

Ramon Harris' HIDING TREE presents a fast paced mystery readers will find impossible to put down. This techno-thriller spans three centuries and turns into a deadly treasure hunt. Laura is a fascinating heroine as she struggles to reconcile professional demands with personal needs, gaining a unique opportunity to redefine her life, at great risk, on her own terms. With a rich cast of characters and a fast paced plot, Harris's masterful storytelling gift will hold readers riveted. HIDING TREE comes very highly recommended.

Hiding Tree
I got this book at B&N because of the back cover synopsis, and boy was I pleased. This is a mystery with real content. The plot is totally new and different. A woman is the protagonist and instead of simpering and crying, she takes charge. I work in a bank, but I loved the descriptions of computer techniques that lead to the breakthrough. And I love the fact that Laura is conscious of the strain on our environment and trying to do something about it, even though she puts her job and life in trouble. The ending is perfect. I only wish my own life could go half so well. Laura deserves it!

An Interesting Volume
Reading Hutton is always interesting, as he is such a pivital individual in fencing's transition from the nineteenth to the twentieth century. "Old Sword-Play" gives us a look at fencing's early stages of develpment. For the fencer, it is good to know one's origins. As the author of "The Art and Science of Fencing," and "The Inner Game of Fencing," and the editor/publisher of FENCERS QUARTERLY MAGAZINE, I recommend this book.

Buy this book!
It is absolutely essential that you buy this book. Maestro Martinez' introduction alone merits it, but to be able to drink in Hutton's wisdom on historical fencing... hoo boy!
