Modeling and Role-Modeling Theory of Nursing
This book is essential for anybody interested in learning about the nursing theory, Modeling and Role-Modeling. The content includes rationale for the theory, the underlying assumptions and conceptual bases for the theory, and guidelines for applying the theory. While the original printing was in 1985 and additional research and applications have further developed various parts of the theory, the basic elements of the theory have not changed since its inception. Because this theory is applicable across settings and client populations, it is highly recommended!

Modeling and Role-modeling is available
I believe that this book is the same as Modeling and Role-modeling: A Theory and Paradigm for Nursing by Erickson, Tomlin and Swain. Please see my review of that book for details.

History From the Heart
This was one of those 'recommended' books popping up under a cookbook I was ordering. I follow these threads because I've made some delightful finds that way. I'd never have known this book existed, had it not shown up under another book. I consider this the closest thing I can do to browsing in a 'real' store. Thank you, Amazon!

I occasionally come across a book covering something about which I know nothing. Other than hearing of Mary Margaret McBride's show during the Depression, I knew nothing of these local radio pioneers, sending news, advice and recipes to small towns and rural areas alike. Radio is still the most democratic of our media, accessible to anyone for pennies, and still a vital force in many third-world countries. We used to have radio that encompassed far more than just news and talk-radio; people expected more from the radio back then, and they got it.

The book is broken up into chapters covering the careers and recipes of women broadcasting from KMA radio in Iowa. There is no doubt that the part of a farm housewife could be lonely, and these radio programs would have provided good company. We have no true equivalent today; these broadcasters usually knew their audience personally, and vice versa. Into the sixties, these women broadcast their programs from their own homes, often from the kitchen, where they'd make recipes while giving them out over the air. Most of these women had an 'open door' policy where any listener coming through town could stop by their home and have refreshments without notice! Who would, or could, do that nowadays?

The recipes are excellent. I've made a dozen of them and all have worked well. My favorite so far is Jo Freed's carrot cake; unlike many, it's subtle with the spices and makes a large, juicy sheet cake.

Truly, though, it's the stories of the women working as 'radio homemakers' that makes the book. Most of these women were working because they had to, and mainstream broadcasting was still unheard of for women. Therefore, these women made successful careers appealing to women.

The author was herself a well-known broadcaster and brings personal knowledge of the other radio pioneers to add texture and substance to the book. It is beautifully written in a straightforward and informal style.

I appreciate the author documenting a small, but important, part of American history before all the radio homemakers are gone. Her book is valuable and engaging reading, even without the excellent recipes.

The kind and helpful world of "radio homemaking"
I sent for this unusual and interesting book after hearing its interesting and kind author in a radio interview. Not being a midwesterner I had never heard of Iowa station KMA or its "radio homemakers." The author informs us early on that the station "relied on talented and creative women" from the outset, in 1925. These Iowa women were radio journalists, home economists, and radio personalities - all in one. There were call-in shows. Their communities depended on them for weekly entertainment, information, humor, and continuity. These women and their shows, which had great longevity, were loved by their listeners, who considered them a part of their lives.

This book assembles recipes and life stories with equal ease. The careful stories are of the various women who had shows on the radio, the topics they explored on-air (mostly homey ones of interest to Iowa farm wives), and their effect on their listening community.

The photographs are poignant and wonderful. The recipes are mostly high-fat, high-calorie dishes that should probably be eaten in moderation. They are perfect for any one who longs for typical old-fashioned midwestern American food: meat and more meat, potatoes, hearty casseroles, vegetables cooked in old-fashioned ways, cheese balls and dips, cakes, pies, cookies, and candy. Some did not sound like anything one might like to try - "Chipped Dried Beef Deluxe," "Six-layer Washday Dinner" and (to this reader) improbable party foods such as "Crockpot Chili Dip." Some are downright disturbing to read, such as "Chipped Beef Chicken," which combines creamed cheese, chicken, bacon, and beef. Heart attack!

The main thing, though, is the size and the goodness of the personalities profiled here, along with the picture of a mostly vanished world. It's really not about replicating the food. A very worthwhile read about a group of interesting and truly nice people.

the only kosher cookbook you'll ever need to buy
evelyn rose's complete international jewish cookbook is just that - complete. the recipes are simple yet delicious and come out perfectly every time (well nearly!). no long lists of impossible to find ingredients for the recipes either. the only cook book you'll ever need!

Brilliant
This is one of the best Jewish cookery books I have ever bought. I have used it since I received it as a gift two years ago, and have bought copies for my family and friends both here in the UK and abroad. If you can only buy one Jewish cook book, this is the one!

Delicious hiking
What a wonderful, innovative hiking guidebook! As a hiker andPalm Springs resident, it is a joy to read Linda's prose that soappropriately captures our beautiful desert trails.

I amparticularly impressed with Linda's description of the IndianCanyons. Each year, HIKE FOR HOPE is held in these beautiful canyons, offering 7 different guided hikes to raise money to fund women'scancer research at The City of Hope. Linda understands the magic ofthose canyons and the wonderful spirit that exists there. Linda hasbeen a terrific supporter of this event... we met her because of herbook and our admiration of it...

Thanks-- I'd have missed this trail and its incredible view
During our drive out to Palm Springs, I skimmed through the book and map to find hikes that would be near our hotel. I read about six different hikes/chapters and then chose two that I thought would be close and not too long since I would be hiking by myself.

Not familiar with the area at all, the first thing I did after arriving at the hotel was ask the concierge where the nearest hiking trails were. I was told there were none.(The concierge could use a copy of your book.)

Back at my room, armed with your book I found one three blocks away. Perfect! I set out the next morning, found the trail easily and started up. What I enjoyed most while hiking was remembering what you had written about your experience and it was like sharing my trek with an invisible friend. I noticed the canyon below that you had mentioned and wondered if I would have admired it as much if it hadn't been pointed out in your book. When I reached the top with that incredible view of the Coachella Valley, I sat for a long time.I was looking forward to telling you that I had 'made it', it was worth the uphill climb and to say thanks because if I hadn't read about this trail, I would never have known it existed!

I had originally planned to run up the trail--that lasted about one third of the way up. But I did run all the way down on the way back. Yahoo!!!

I finished the rest of the book and intended to do a second hike but ran out of time. We did check out the famous homes listed in your book while driving around.

The Guide that puts it all together!
The Guide is a must have for all ECE teachers. The only source that comprehensively provides teachers with a system that will meet the needs of ALL the children in the classroom. At the same time, reducing planning time by providing a framework of skill activities as a guide. This book will help teachers in educating parents as well. Each area of development (motor, perceptual, literacy, memory and problem solving)are broken down to show the sequence that is followed in acquiring skills, thus quieting the "all they do is play! " crowd. I recommend this book to new and experienced teachers.

Every preschool teacher should use this book daily!
I was given this book when I started working as a preschool teacher in a public school system. I find it a Godsend and recommend it to anyone that is serious about child development.

Great Stats guide for SLA and Applied Linguistics
This guide will be invaluable to anyone who is planning to do any quantitative research. All the examples are taken from the fields of applied linguistics or second language acquisition. However, the thoroughness and clarity of the writing make this a great book for anyone who is thinking about research design and statistical analysis. The authors do a great job of anticipating difficulties and tying new information to what's already been presented. The book is suitable as a textbook/workbook (exercises are integrated into the text) or as a reference book.

The only drawback is the layout. It looks like it was just typed up in a word processing program and then printed out with no thought to page boundaries or layout. However, the outstanding quality of the contents more than makes up for this minor inconvenience.

a comprehensive guide to statistics in language research
If you want to understand more about why second language researchers use certain statistical procedures rather than others, and how they go about it, then this book is a must for you. Divided into four parts, the main areas of focus are; i) planning a research project, ii) describing data, iii) comparing groups and iv) describing relationships. Part 1 deals with defining the research question, stating hypotheses and constructing research designs, as well as giving good advice on how to write the research proposal or report. Part 2 is a basic introduction to statistical concepts such as mean, standard deviation and z scores, and is written in a clear and logical style. Part 3 is a little heavy going at times, but the authors have a knack of being able to anticipate the reader's frustrations and go to good lengths to be made understood. T-tests and ANOVA in their various forms, and their non-parametric equivalents such as the signed rank test and Friedman are all covered in detail, with worked examples, as in the other parts of the book. Part 4 deals with correlation, such as chi-squared and Pearson, regression, and principal component analysis and factor analyis. In addition, the appendices contain lists of all the formulas and statistical tables you will ever need should you wish to compute by hand. This is a very thorough and useful book for anyone with an interest in linguistics, or for those who are contemplating doing their own second language research.

I really enjoyed this book. It's a nice story with very likeable characters. I've read it a few times now and it doesn't get old or boring. This story just screams for a sequel. I sincerely hope one comes out soon.

I really loved this book! As an animal lover I thought this was great. Avery and Logan seemed very realand believable. Tanner was so special too. I hope there is a part 2 so we can find out which of his boys Mac picks for Emma.

The Best!!!!!!!
The Scarlet Thread is a really good book. Since I am a fan of mystery and romance books, this has the perfect mix for my taste. I will tell you five things I liked about this book. I really liked the plot of the story. It was really good. Angela, one of the main characters, was a major part in making this book good. The ending of the story really completes it; it doesn't just leave you hanging. I like the love story part of the book. It shows that two people who are truly in lovedon't forget each other even when separated. The second half of the story, the mystery, is well written and there are different twists to make you wonder, "What next?!" I had a hard time thinking of five things I didn't like about The Scarlet Thread, but I managed to come up with them. Clara, Steven's second wife whom he doesn't really love, is a real witch but a necessary part of the story. Steven cheated on Clara alot and I didn't really like that but she did deserve it in a way. Steven should've told his family about his first marriage to Angela. The final thing I didn't like was that Steven didn't tell angela he was a mafia memeber when they first met. Anybody who likes mystery and romance would like this book. If you like things that have to do with the mafia then you should read this book.

Superb Storytelling
This is the first book I've read by Evelyn Anthony, and I am impressed! The storyline was captivating - I could hardly wait to see what would happen next. She is remarkable at creating characters with depth and dialogue that doesn't sound canned, but as it would in real life. Each scene she chose to portray (as she painted various scenes from different people's points of view) greatly advanced the storyline and/or the character development. A great read!

Evelyn Sharp
I just got done doing a report on Evelyn Sharp for school, and thought it was really cool that I didn't have to go far to look for information. This book really got me more interested in her life and how much of an influence she had on women in aviation back in her time. It's awesome that someone from a town near mine in Nebraska could be so famous and successful and have such an impact on a lot of people. This is a great book to read if you love aviation or even if you don't.

A great book about and a great gal and her home town in NE.
This book puts the reader into a small town in NE in the 1930's. You get the feel of growing up in the hard times of the thirties, of a girl with a passion to fly, her continuous concern for her parents, her friends and her hometown who had supported her in her quest to learn to fly, even tho it was hard times in an drouth-stricken ag community. Learn of the sacrifices made to defend our country, including the supreme sacrifice by this young woman who loved to fly.

Excellent pocketguide for interns/students
This is an excellent pocket guide for final year students or interns in small animal hospitals. It covers not only internal medicine but orthopedics as well. Despite minor errors, it is still the best there is. It is used in veterinary teaching hospitals all over the U.S.

GREAT MEDICAL REFERENCE FOR PET OWNERS
I'm sure this book is a godsend to veterinary students. But I'm not a veterinary student, I use it to learn about and understand possible problems, their symptoms and treatment, so that I can be more vigilant with my pets, and have a better conversation with my veterinarian. Yes, it's more challenging to the understanding of the average pet owner, but it's far more authoritative than the average "first aid for your pet" book.
