An engaging depiction of a truly remarkable & selfless life
The Turtle Lady: Ila Fox Loetscher Of South Padre is the life story of a truly remarkable woman who, after the death of her husband, devoted herself to preserving the sea turtle Lepidochelys kempii (Kemp's ridley), from extinction. A superb biographical portrait of a woman who was a pioneer aviator, through her marriage and tragic widowhood, to her years as a devoted environmentalist and animal lover, The Turtle Lady is not to be missed. This is an engaging depiction of a truly remarkable and selfless life. The Turtle Lady is especially recommended reading for wildlife and environmental protection activists.

Will always have a place in my heart
First published in 1966, I read this book many years ago now when I found a tattered paperback copy in a second hand bookshop.

This is a beautifully written novel set against Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812. It is the story of Valentina, the Countess Grunowska, a Polish patriot trapped into a marriage with a vindictive and violent husband. She meets a French officer, Colonel de Chavel (we never learn his first name) at a ball and they fall in love with a passion that I have rarely ever seen equalled in fiction.

He joins the march to Russia although he is an independent thinker amongst the political intrigue and espionage at the Polish Court - a true French patriot and not just one of Napoleon's minions. She follows him, fearing the wrath and sadism of her husband and, incredibly, she finds him during the freezing, snowy and tragic retreat from Moscow. Wounded, de Chavel has lost his right arm and is near death when Valentina finally locates him in a scene of such emotion that I have always remembered it. She nurses him tenderly, joining the French army as it retreats back to Poland.

Finally, they settle quietly and blissfully happy on one of her properties in rural Poland until she becomes pregnant with his child. Despite the handicap of his lost sword arm, de Chavel challenges Valentina's husband to a pistol duel in order to kill him and thus make her free to marry him. However, fate intervenes and one of Valentina's old and faithful retainers murders Count Grunowski before the duel can take place. And so de Chavel returns to Valentina, now heavily pregant and fearful for his life, in a shimmer of summer light and poignant, tender love.

I shall NEVER, EVER, forget this book, reread it from time to time and guard my two tattered copies well. Do try to find a copy and read it - it is magical. I would give it 10 stars if I could.

Should be required reading for caregivers, fromt CNA to MD's
This is one of those books that I wish I had written. Feil puts not only a human face on the diagnosis of dementia, but with that face, she explains the basic human need that lies within; to be validated. People are more than their age, their diagnosis, their care plans and their "issues", but all that is often lost, particularly in a long-term care setting and the individual is reduced to dehumanized terms. But Feil reminds us of the unique needs of the -individual- and illustrates effective means of communicating with -people- with dementia (not dealing with "dementia" as though it were some sort of creature divorced from the person) based on -their- comforts and abilities, not the caregivers. Comunication techniques using music, gentle touch accompanied with verbalization and a variety of other methods (custom fit to your client) proved successful when I implemented them for my clients. A wonderful book which puts the human dignity of each client front and center. Highly recommended!

Refreshingly original investigation
Dr. Sommers served her internship in a women's prison. She applies acute observation with a feminist attitude to develop insight into the etiology of women's "crinimality," and casts new light on the very word: "criminal." Please note: the correct title is: Voices from Within: Women who have Broken the Law

Inspiring Book !!
From Angus: You would enjoy reading We Keep a Light; I found this remarkable woman's (Evelyn Richardson) struggles against the elements truly fascinating. The ingenuity and aplomb with which this family faced adversity is beautifully communicated. Throughout the book she relates the isolation and weatherly exposure of (off Halifax, Nova Scotia) Outer Island (Bon Portage) to the safety and comfort of close-in Emerald (Stoddart) island. She spent summers on our island where her grandfather was the light keeper. She relates this with such writing skill it clearly imparts a sense of her humor and healthy perspective for life. I found the book inspiring.
