Shy Steosaurus of Cricket Creek
I read this book years ago, about 1964. It has been an all-time favorite. Beautifully written. Anyone who reads this book is going to love George the Stegosaurus and his two friends, Joey and Joan, the children who found him. This is a wonderful book to read to your older children, age 10 more or less. I suggest we all read this book again for old-times sake!! Enjoy.

Why do the best ones go out of print???
By Christie Schultz I'm currently looking for titles by an author that I remember with fondness from my own childhood. I am a teacher, and have been trying to find them for my students, and my own son. E.S. Lampman wrote not only about Native Americans, but about fantasy worlds which put science fiction effectively into the hands of young people. The first two are the "Shy Stegosaurus" books. I found one of them listed and it is "hard to find"; the first is "The Shy Stegosaurus of Indian Springs". It's about a stegosaurus which not unreasonably has a weird liking for bananas (the more ripe, the better), and at some point it is labled as an Indian spirit by the local Native American Shaman. You're right, it's a great story! The second book is "The Shy Stegosaurous of Cricket Creek", the story line of which I forget other than a brother and sister find the last living dinosaur, and it can talk to them. The children are out riding horses in the canyon, and suddenly they see the rock face move...the dinosaur has to live near a mineral spring to survive.... Lampman effectively uses biological concepts like natural camoflage of animals as plot devices, makes reasonable guesses about their dietary needs, and as well she shows an effective grasp of Native American cultural issues. One of her later sci-fi books, "Rusty's Spaceship", was pure fantasy with the weird visits to various planets in the solar system, but it is such a ripping good story that questionable science facts become immaterial! (Jules Verne wasn't accurate either, but he's still in print!). In fact, reading it as an adult, I see it for what it is, the book is a child's dream of what might really be on Jupiter (creatures made of gas bags) or on Mars (armies of flying ants) or how it might be to take your homemade spaceship into space. Another title by this author is "City Under the Back Steps", and it's a precursor to "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" and a semi-steal from L.F Baum's "Policeman Bluejay" (another rarity from 1910 or so). Storyline: two children are bitten by the Queen ant and shrink down to ant size....and learn a good deal about the life of a hive of ants. Lampman had a very pithy sense of humor I thought at the time, and I enjoyed these books, and others by her, very much as a child. I wish they were around for youngsters today.

Fond memories of childhood
What's amazing is that there are five other reviews here of this obscure children's book, which has to be almost 40 years old. One reviewer here recalls reading the book back in 1964, which is about the year I would have read it. And we all seem to have fond memories of reading this delightful book. This story about George the shy stegosaurus was one of the most entertaining children's books I (and apparently, all the other reviewers here, too) ever read, which, from the title, you might think we were all nuts. But back in the early 60's this was state-of-the-art for children's books, and it really was a great little book. It skillfully integrated a dinosaur theme with the story of the curious little brother and sister who discovered his hideaway, and things take off from there. I understand there are occasional rare, used copies available--but unfortunately they're not cheap.

Lampman also wrote several other books, Rusty's Spaceship, one other shy stegosaurus book, The Shy Stegosaurus of Indian Springs, and The World Under the Back Steps. Rusty's Spaceship was another one of my favorites. In this book, Rusty and his alien friend, Tipia, go gallivanting around the solar system, having various adventures, before returning to earth, where they have a few more in their invisible spaceship.

All these are great books for your kids. If you can find reasonably priced used copies, they're all worth picking up.

I love this cookbook! Great for teens and other beginners.
As a young adult librarian, and an amature cook, I have nothing but good things to say about this cookbook. I found it to be well designed, fun to read, and highly informative, but never intimidating. I've been pushing it every chance I get, and plan to buy a copy for my teenage brother...plus as a graduation gift for my cousins. The illustrations are wacky, but not childish. My favorite detail is the collection of icons used to show what catagories recipes fall into. This book is the perfect combination of entertainment and useful information!

a great place to start
i bought this cookbook in junior high and i have loved it since. evelyn raab wrote the recipes in a way so that they weren't intimidating for a beginning cook. in fact it's much like receiving advice on cooking from a trusted friend. she wants you to succeed and writes in a way that makes you feel like you really can. it helped me get started with my cooking and four years later i'm still using it regularly. i highly recommend this book whether you're just starting or you've already amassed a large collection of cookbooks. no collection would be truly complete without this one.

Amazing, truly, amazing!
Mrs. Mangerich, I was moved, ok, maybe I'm a bit partial, but I loved it... Mrs. Mangerich, my grandfather gave me this book, you know your cousin, I thought agh, another war-story. But I got into, drove my friends nuts talking about it, i loved every aspect of the story. The drama, and the way the story was written was beautiful. I was impressed, truly, especially considering I'm only a teen and you managed to captivate my impaitent mind... 5 stars all around, I hope to see you @ the family reunion!

A story of Bravery and Survival good for all ages
Albanian Escape was exciting, quick-paced, and inspiring. After crashing behind enemy lines, this narrative of a group of brave women, written from one surviovor's perspective, was everything an adventure story could be. An unexpected turn of events leads to a challenge, a journey behind enemy lines during World War II. Throughout, the physical strength, courage, disciple and patriotism of the servicewomen remain steady. I loved hearing about the descriptions of covert radio transmissions, the long walks in the dark and the unfamiliar food eaten gratefully by the characters. The story read like a story, yet one knew IT HAD REALLY HAPPENED, because of the threat of Hitler's armies and that there was much at stake if these people were captured. Another angle of the narrative which interested me was the fact that Albania, recently in the news because of the wars in the Balkans and Kosovo, was the poulation the nurses came in contact with. I learned a lot about the way political loyalties were very fragile and unreliable during a war. For example, In the book, there were three main groups of citizens in Albania: those loyal to the Germans, those who wanted political independence from the dictator of Albania at the time, and those who were loyal to the Allies. Therefore, the issue of who was friendly was a complicated one for the Americans. Reading about Ablania, I gained insight into current events in my own world. I recommend this book highly to readers of all ages, especially those who want to learn about what it was like during World War II.

Important piece of historical work.
This was very important for me as my father, who is now deceased, was one of the medics on board the aircraft. Information on him that was unknown to me was brought to light in the book. It is well written and i am thankful that this piece of history that involved my father was recorded for the future.

Wonderful gift for a young woman
As I read this book, I kept thinking how wonderful it would have been to have it as a young woman, just starting my life journey. Such insights ~ a great source of wisdom as we get older. I would highly recommend giving this book as a college graduation gift.

Simply the best--blending faith and form with zest!
Reading Evelyn Bence's book of prayers made me homesick to revitalize my own communication with God. It was as if there was an embedded ellipsis at the end of each page, gently nudging me ... my turn was next. Bravo, Evelyn!

The honest musings and mutual blessings of friendships.
The delightful word pictures of the prayers elicit smiles and tears reminding me that friendships are precious and always to be cherished. The book challenges me to be more open and honest with God as well as with my friends.

This is What I Need
I bought this book and I loved it! It is easy to read and understand the business in fashion world. Lots of useful advise from the famous people for those who wants to go into the real world of fashion business.

Excellent introduction to the fashion and apparel industry
I've wanted to pursue my love of apparel design, but have held back because it felt like too "foofy" of a career choice. I was pleasantly surprised, reading this book, to find out what a practical business this is. Artistic ability and design talent are really a small part of what those in the fashion business need to survive; most of the rest is an understanding of marketing, merchandising, global economy, quality control...in other words, business skills. I wish I had known this as I was graduating from high school--I could already be employed by now! I am using the information in this book to evaluate design programs, and feel confident that I can now go into this field with my eyes open. Fashion and apparel aren't as glamorous and superficial as they might seem: there's a lot of hard work and business savvy that makes up the bulk of the field.

A great look at the fashion business
I'm using this book in a course right now, and for the first time I understand how the fashion business runs! This book has been a wonderful source of first-hand information, I love it.

Rich resource for exploring on the web
I heartily recommend this book. It gives plenty of tips & tidbits on how time spent with your child on the Internet can be a top-notch experience for you both. Tonight, while exploring sites recommended in this book with my 7-year-old daughter Hannah, we came upon a science site with a geography game. We clicked "Easy" and saw a map of the United States with one state highlighted and 4 clickable possibilities from which to choose. Hannah called, "I'll get the globe!" hopped up out of her seat and retrieved the globe. She delightedly located the correct answer, time after time. I was impressed with how the game on the Internet sparked her interest and, just as author Evelyn Petersen says, inspired the child to connect with the world around her. Plus, it was a fun time for us both! What's more, Petersen organizes the book in a way I gratefully appreciate. Her numerous web site recommendations are listed in the back by chapter for easy reference, a nice touch. This feature alone is well worth the price of the book. In all, a five star report from this family!

The New World of Parenting
What a clever, and important idea to write a book about e-parenting. The Petersens give us enough information and enough resources including important web-sites to find anything we want to know -- from discipline and other parenting issues for parents to stimulating and thought-provoking games and exercizes for their kids. In addition to the wealth of information given, we are helped to sift through and evaluate choice of existing web-sites so we can make responsible and informed choices of our own and help our kids learn how to choose and evaluate from the array of information available to them on the web as well.

I especially like the way the Petersens relate the child's e-world to his or own real world and how, for example e-friends, while important, must not replace school friends; e-homework help should not replace the library, a real book, or personal parent support.

In short, parenting by internet, while a tremendous addition, must not be a substitute for our personal and interpersonal worlds. The Petersens help us do that. Nice touch.

A "must" for every parent of a kid with a computer.
People who write about technology come in two varieties: the technophobes and the technophiles. The t-phobes argue that technology is diminishing the quality of human life. The t-philes assert that technology will bring us a new state-of-the-art paradise on Earth.

The tech-haters include heavyweight social thinkers such as Neil Postman (The Disappearance Of Childhood and Technopoly); Sven Birkerts (The Gutenberg Elegies); and Jane Healey (Endangered Minds and Failure To Connect).

Among the tech-lovers we should name Harley Hahn (Harley Hahn Teaches The Internet); Esther Dyson (Release 2.1); and two authors who I've just discovered, Evelyn Petersen and her daughter Karin. Their new book, Sams Teach Yourself E-Parenting Today, explains how using computers and the Internet can enhance our parenting skills.

Petersen and Petersen have set themselves two difficult goals: to counsel about parenting in general, and to explain how the Internet can help to forge a friendly relationship between parents and kids. In both these areas they have succeeded admirably. The person-to-person sections contain parenting advice which is savvy, compassionate, and sensible. The chapters about computers are clear, balanced, and written expertly.

The book contains excellent sections about many issues, some well-publicized and others little-known. How can children use the Internet to make friends worldwide? What does every parent need to know about the various aspects of Internet safety? How can using computers build family togetherness? Which web sites offer the most pertinent parenting activities and advice? ... I was especially impressed with Petersen's 40-page Appendix titled 'A Brief Guide To Child Development.' This section is eminently useful as a gage for helping us to understand what is "normal" (and abnormal) for children at various ages and stages of growth.

Ready or not, the Internet is here in our schools and homes. Computers are powerful tools, and -- let us not forget -- potentially dangerous ones. Children unsupervised, or children who receive poor computer instruction, will become at best technologically illiterate, and at worst harmed by misuse and over-use of these tremendous tools. Fortunately, for kids are who receive the right training, the Internet offers many remarkable benefits. The great virtue of Sams Teach Yourself E-Parenting Today is the way it teaches us to use technology well, while reminding us that creating a caring and enjoyable relationship with our children is the most important parenting skill of all.

Couldn't Put It Down!
Evelyn Stewart has excelled in sharing the effects of abuse on the family. She opened her life to share with us how family violence was passed from generation to generation until one woman was ready to say "enough is enough." Totally Discombobulated keeps the reader spell bound. I would recommend this book to anyone, but particularly the woman that thinks she is in a hopeless situation. Evelyn shows with faith and fortitude, anything is possible.

Totally Discombobulated
I have read this book two times and it is a wonderfully written book and will make you sit on the edge of your seat while reading it. Evelyn has a master piece here and it would make a wonderfull movie. Every one needs to read it.

Totally Blown Away
I've always been one to read a book that teaches me something and reveals the life of a person who lives or lived a life of intrest. Evelyn is one of those people. She deserves to be heard. Domestic Violence is something we don't always hear about because I believe we've turned a deaf ear on the subject. I for one didn't believe it happened like this. It's hard for the average person to phantom the rage any one person could project toward someone they are suppose to love, honor and cherish. The way Evelyn tells her story is not only a history lesson but it is her true to life account of what she lived through. Some will say "why didn't she leave him?" Other's will say "I applaud her courage and I understand." Today more than ever this horror needs to be exposed for what it is. The suffering has to stop and people need to be courageous enough to run and hide from domestic violence. Every man, woman and child will benefit from Evelyn's story and realize that the silence and hiding of such a crime is only perpetuating the violence.
If this book becomes a movie it is a sure blockbuster. The way Evelyn relates her life story is a movie on pages. This book deserves to be read whether a victim or a survivor, the average person or not, it is an eye-opener. I never got the full picture when I read this book. It has made me aware and has equipped me with knowledge and compassion to help anyone who might be suffering in the life of domestic violence. This book is a must read for anyone with the heart of compassion and anyone who would choose to expose the ugly truth that goes on behind closed doors all over the world.

A Ticket to Montana
Entirely evocative of the Montana landscape. An excellent gift or coffee table book for Montana natives or Montana-philes. Not only does Evelyn capture the physicality of the place - she captures it's soul - it's very essence.

Gathers photos which portray early Montana life
Evelyn Cameron left her English home to become a rancher in Montana in the late 1800s: she used her photography skills to help support her family, and captured Montana life in the process. Photographing Montana gathers photos which portray early Montana life and deserves a spot in any Montana history collection as well as in art libraries seeking examples of regional photographic talent. Excerpts from her diaries and letters include plenty of autobiographical insights.

Outstanding frontier photography
This is an outstanding book of frontier American photography, as well as an interesting story of the photography, Evelyn Cameron. Cameron was a high-society woman from England who moved to Montana with her husband in the late nineteenth century. Bored with frontier life, she learned photography from a neighbor and then began to photograph the natural beauty on wildlife of Montana. This books succeeds from both the frontier photography and the story of this woman's life.

Amazing and Touching Story
I highly recommend this book for a historical novel that will make you feel good when you turn the last page. The fight of a man to be reunited with his children is interesting in its detail as told by his own daughter. Whether for a bit of Irish flavor, need for a read or interest in the story line... this book will not fail to please.

Have the times changed much??????
'Of all nature's gifts to the human race, what is sweeter to a man than his child' from Marcus Tullius Cicero

Dublin 1953. Abandoned by his wife for another man (his cousin), and deperste to have his six children looked after while he found work in england, Desmond Doyle trusted the word of the authorities, and put them all into temporary State care.

This novel is written form the viewpoint of nine-year-old Evelyn, Desmond's eldest child and only daughter, this moving true story recounts Desmond's shocking discovery on his return.
In his absence, the State has consigned the children to its permanent care. So began his desperate battle with the government to reunite his family, and change an unjust law.

Tea and Green Ribbons or the UK Title Evelyn
Highly recommended book, showing the injustice of the church and the state in Dublin during the 50s.

Desmond Doyle, shows true love (in this instance) together with guts and bravery to fight for his children.

Just one point, LA from phila you have no idea of the facts or circumstances leading to the departure of Charlotte Doyle from the household, it would be helpful if your comments and opinions of her perceived mental illness had some basis in fact instead of self opinion. Please read the book and leave the blame to one side.

VERY interesting reading for the open minded
"The Reluctant Messenger of Science and Religion" is a study in how science and the world religions are not in conflict with each other and need each other to form a complete picture. To make it less of a laborious read it is presented in the format of a novel. It starts with two members of debate societies debating over whether science is correct about the creation of the earth or religion is correct. From there we follow both the losing and winning debater through a series of life changing and illuminating events that effectively illustrate the authors' beliefs. It is very well written for a book of this sort and teaches the viewpoint that there are other interpretations of various Bible passages that are not in conflict with science. In fact there are several areas where the teachings are actually a return to the older beliefs. The book also freely examines other religious views from Islam to Hinduism, Buddhism to Sufi and brings them into the discussion.

Strong conservatives from almost any religious teaching will probably have a problem with this book as it attempts to bring harmony between the various beliefs and show that they are all parts of a more complete whole. Since most conservatives by definition believe that their view is right and any other is blasphemy I would expect them to have at least some difficulties. On the other hand, those with an open spirit will probably find it one of their favorite books.

Having said this, I would be failing my obligation to my readers if I did not point out that there are several editing problems of a nature that I would not expect in a finished product. While I did not make a note of them as I went along there are maybe ten to fifteen in the book - far more than the two to three maximum that I expect. As an example, page 235 has the sentence "Chester spoke to know one in particular". Although annoying, they don't interrupt the flow of the book too much and the authors make their point very clearly. It is only because of these errors that this is a recommended read and not a highly recommended read.

Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
The website is so vast, that it was almost inconceivable to imagine that a book relatively small as this one, would do justice to the premise that all religions as well as science have to be seen together to uncover the truth.
But the Drs. Boston have managed to produce just that! The Reluctant Messenger is a book that satisfies the reader of a skeptical Chester's adventures with religion and science with the Master, which are on the website, and introduces a new juxtaposition: that of Lydia who is a believer of one religion alone. Coming together in a debate spirals each into a search for peace; in two differing directions: one in remote areas of India, and the other within the remote areas of conventional religion. The seeming innocuousness of the physical setting hides the breathtaking journeys each of them takes to the far reaches of human belief, faith and knowledge.
Those who have made a study of religion and/or of science, will not be disappointed: this book is a masterly progression of elegantly presented word diagrams that explain just how the different religions as well as science do fit together into a magnificent picture. There is a masterly change of pace from the sublime to the mundane: descriptions of a meditation of different dimensions and the clearing up of a breakfast table.
The tolerant among us are used to thinking that each religion leads to God- but that all religions together do that; and that science is not just a re-discovery of old facts but a re-presentation of them: that is indeed a unique perspective.
But what of the stories of Lydia and Chester? Do they come together once again? As the book progresses, so do they; and as we are caught up in their lives, it appears that we will need a sequel to find that out!

Even more inspirational
I read the book three times before righting this review, this book is incredible, mind boggling and as it states it has that missing piece of the perfect puzzle! ...
Stephen W. Boston, is the one who brought me to G-D, and also has enlightened my life with Truth, and now has given me a map to the path of awareness. This book is essential to anyone who
is on a journey with G-D.
Thank you Stephen I cherish all you have taught me.
