Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus...
What a wonderful book this is! Conlon's voice is real...her character are people, living, loving, despairing, and making the best of it all.

Every single one of them rings a bell and the honesty is refreshing and true. They are a group of real friends who know when to tell the truth and when to think over telling the truth. Everyone takes responsibility for who they are and they accept, support, and make allowances.

This is what it's all about.

A GLASSFUL OF LETTERS
Best novel I read since Charming Billy. Had trouble putting it down, it gripped me immediately and does s fine job of increasing conflict up to the very last chapter. Story told with letters and an occasional chapter devoted to a single character providing his/her background from childhood on. Well written, characters developed in full. Read the book from our library - it was published in Ireland - and purchased a copy to send to a daughter who will loan it to others. Wonderful story - or stories really.

Invaluable for Classicists
Like all Loeb Classics, this edition is presented with the ancient greek text on the left page, and its english translation on the right, giving students of classical greek an easy cross-reference. The translations are easy to read and not too difficult to comprehend, while still at the same time accurately rendered (unlike many Loeb translations, which are frequently too literal a translation to be readable).

But what makes this book of keen interest is not the attention paid to Hesiod's Theogony and Works & Days, nor the anonymous "Homeric" Hymns, but rather to its meticulous compedium of the lesser-known works it presents. Especially, for those works for which no complete version has survived, only fragments and occassional (later) commentaries.

In this volume you discover a wonderful epic poem called The Catalogue of Women and Eoie, of which only about half survives scattered among a hundred or so fragments. You also discover The Shield of Hercules, which some attribute to Hesiod. But most fascinating of all are the fragments of the Epic Cycle, poems written as a sort of "history" of the Greek people, of which the two great works by Homer (The Iliad and The Odyssey) were the most well-known and the only ones to survive intact. As far as I know, this is the only volume in english which gathers all of these fragments together and attempts to sort them out in some kind of order; for those interested in the ancient epics, this alone makes the edition worth the price.

This book is a sobering reminder of just how much has been lost over the centuries, of just how little actually has survived. Sadly, this is now probably the closest anyone will ever get to being able to read The Cypriad or The Melampodia again, and that's a shame.

Very literal translation...very helpful.
Sometimes when consulting the Loeb Library for a translation of a greek text one finds a version wildly different than the original. This volume of the Loeb niether betrays the text, nor translates with arcane vocabulary (e.g. thou, thee, etc.). All in all, a very useful tool.

nutty, but true
This book brought back such a flood of memories of my own born-again upbringing. The great gift of this book is that it made me laugh hard and out loud, after all these years of hiding out from the memories. It captures just about every oddball, earnest angle to the whole experience, from what a teenager should do to pass the time in church (do make important sermon notes in the margin of your Bible, don't clean out your purse) to what you're supposed to say when someone asks you to dance ("I don't dance, I'm a Christian.") to why you felt so smug when you won a Sword Drill. The book doesn't make me want to relive it (once was enough!) or inflict it on my own child (though I did make him memorize the books of the Bible, just so he wouldn't be Biblically illiterate). But it does make me think, well, okay, it was weird but it was also funny (in retrospect) and I'm mighty grateful someone else who lived it got it down on paper before we all forgot what happened to us. I've ordered copies for all my brothers and sisters, who will also see themselves on every page. Great job.

Wonderful book about great memories
This is a very sweet book that will make you laugh if you grew up with only a few of these memories. Not irreverent or blasphemous, it is a true but humorous look at how we grew up in religious families and communities. So many things that I had forgotten from my childhood were brought to mind again while reading this scrap book of growing up spiritual. It was surprising that the authors left out Davey and Goliath as proper TV fare though, maybe because it usually aired on Sunday morning before we left for Church. And it is funny to remember what we thought about those "other Churches". I thank the authors for putting this memory album together for us. So buy, enjoy, and share this book with others who will relate, before this gentle way of life is forgotten altogether in some parts of this country.

LAUGH TIL YOU PEE YOUR PANTS HILARIOUS!!!
I have NEVER before laughed OUT LOUD in a bookstore until I picked up this book. I HAD to rush to the checkstand and buy it before they labelled me certifiable and carried me away. I honestly don't think I've ever read anything funnier in my life. I suppose the reason it so appeals to my sense of humor is that it is ALL true!

Who this book is for---anyone who remembers flannelgraphs of Jesus, Sunday School in the church basement and potlucks with lots of macaroni salad.

Who this book is NOT for---Anyone who had no emotional response whatsoever upon reading "Who this book is for." It's also not for those who fit the bill "who this book is for" BUT who take themselves way too seriously and have no sense of humor. The genius of this group of "born again" authors is that they manage to poke fun ad infinitum at the "if you're saved and you know it" generation with complete hysterical...I mean historical accuracy while maintaining a spirit of absolute fun and not an ounce of disrespect or guile. They're not poking fun at God. Their humor is aimed at us, the people who in our sincere attempts to love God, tend to say and do things that are quite frankly fertile ground for laughter.

Again a word of caution, do NOT buy this book if you are easily offended, especially by religious matters. On the other hand, BUY THIS BOOK NOW "if you're saved and you know it" and you want to grin about it until your mouth hurts.

A Masterpiece! Do Admit!
Once again Ms. Mosley has submitted for public consumption a fascinating collection. The letters that flew back and forth between these two literary giants are sparkling, witty, nasty and fabulous. They shed light on a glorious world of nobility and debauchery. Their correspondence fixes in my mind the fact that Nancy Mitford is the greatest mind of this century. Genius! Sheer genius!

Brava, Ms. Mosley, brava!

Delicious with a dash of malice
Poor Evelyn (talented, grumpy, constantly worrying about money) writes to lovely Nancy (talented, cheerful, constantly worrying about her Colonel) about real or imagined slights. Nancy charmingly takes him down a few notches when he deserves it (sometimes he's a bit of a bully). It is a joy to read the letters, even the squabbles (but especially the gossip - I'll never think of Graham Greene in quite the same way again). The comfort of old friends. How I shrieked!! (as Nancy would say)

A Pulitzer Prize For Texana!
Finally---the definitive history of The Light Crust Doughboys, one of the "big three" in the history of western swing and Texas-style country music (the other being Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys and Milton Brown's Musical Brownies). But this must-have book is so much more than a book: history "comes alive" with the included music CD which features a classic Doughboys' decade, the 1940s, alongside their contemporary Grammy-recognized work. And it's in this newer work that fans can really see the legacy and enduring power of a band that's been called country music's greatest historical band. In songs like "Texas Women", "Sending Me You", "Looking Through A Stained Glass Darkly", and "Amarillo, Where The Wind Blows Free, the reader can see how The Light Crust Doughboys keep evolving as artists while always keeping a foot in the best of their Texan and American past. The Light Crust Doughboys are one of the select bands in country music history equally renowned for their instrumental as well as their vocal prowess. Long known for their eclectic approach to music, combining elements of the blues, cowboy music, old-time, gospel, and dixieland, The Light Crust Doughboys are true American ambassadors and modern troubadours of American music. You'll read here of The Doughboys' pioneering use of electric guitar and electric bass in American music. You'll read that they pioneered being a western band in Hollywood's golden age (they pre-dated Bob Wills' film debut by four years). You'll read and hear how they combined gospel music and western swing (with gospel legend James Blackwood) to develop gospel western swing. You'll read how they came up with the idea of blending Pacific/California surf and Texas western swing with Ventures' guitar great, Nokie Edwards, resulting in critically-acclaimed roots music including an Americana Christmas album! Let's all hope that this book paves the way for long-overdue recognition in the NashVegas-dominated Country Music Hall of Fame as well as "early influences" recognition in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Is there a Pulitzer Prize for music history or Texana? This book and CD has earned it! And, do your heart and ears a big favor by searching for other Light Crust Doughboys' music and videos at Amazon.

An enjoyable, fact-filled, recommended blend
The Light Crust Doughboys Are On The Air: Celebrating Seventy Years Of Texas Music by John Mark Dempsey (a native Texan and Assistant Professor of Broadcast Journalism, University of North Texas) is an enjoyable and informative study of The Light Crust Doughboys band and their Texas music, which was broadcast in the "golden era" of radio. Their long-lived radio show lasted from 1930 to 1952, and their particular brand of gospel music was nominated for the Grammys in 1998, 1999, 2001, and 2002. An enjoyable, fact-filled, enthusiastically recommended blend of biographical background and cogent musical assessment of this evolving group, The Light Crust Doughboys Are On The Air is enhanced with a music CD featuring 30 of the band's most popular and beloved songs.

I want to make EVERY quilt in the book!
The instructions are very well laid out and easy to understand. I am a relatively new quilter, and am making the cover quilt right now. For the cover quilt, Evelyn takes what appears to be a rather complicated pattern, and breaks it down into enjoyable portions. She is an excellent teacher, if you ever have the opportunity...take one of her classes, but until then...this book is a MUST have!

An excellent quilting resource!
Evelyn's book is wonderfully designed. You'll enjoy her unique approach to innovating the traditional log cabin block. Her smooth teaching style shows through the pages of her first book. I have already made one of the quilts from the book and loved the results. Watch for more from this talented teacher and author!

Mastery: Words to guide your thoughts/destiny
Mastery pursues the art of devotion to one's ambitions from a splendid array of vantage points. Regardless of one's individual journey, Ames finds commonality through a diversity of recognized masters from all walks of life. Compelling reading that is insightful, entertaining, and thought provoking. A definite title on my gift giving list.

Wonderful, rare book.
This book is well worth the time investment. Ames interviewed 30 people who are considered to be at the top of their field, and asked each one how to achieve mastery, what are the components of mastery, and what are the pitfalls along the way. The uniformity of their answers is striking. Every chapter is just wonderful, and equally engaging. This is easily one of the best books I've ever read.

Insightful Observations
Meditations on Quixote is the first major work Jose Ortega y Gasset published in Spain; as such, the reader will stumble across several infant notions that were later subjected to major philosophical treatments by Ortega. Naturally, therefore, this book is often passed over and dismissed. However, I believe it holds within its pages a very mature, coherent argument. It should be noted that Don Quixote is not actually the central focus of these meditations. Rather, Ortega only delves into Cervantes's great novel during the second half of the book (the "first" meditation), using that knight of rueful countenance to clarify his analysis. I will not attempt to explain the philosophy presented in this book, as I feel there is a reason it takes hundreds of pages to express these concepts. It is such with all philosophy; think of it as a food - I can compress all the contents of a five-star dinner into a dense pill and give that to you, but it would not serve justice to the original pieces. Having said that, I can certainly relay (as another reviewer has) the famous expression "I am myself and my circumstance." Ortega puts significance into what this "circumstance" is composed of, mentally dividing the material things in life and their deeper meaning, explaining that this deeper meaning is just as real as the material surface. He then leads into the concept of man as a hero via his own will ("the will to be oneself is heroism"), focusing on Don Quixote, and modern literature in general (as opposed the ideal epics of old), as examples. Julián Marías makes interesting notes throughout. Recommended!

The starting point of Ortega's philosophy
The great Spanish philosopher Ortega y Gasset left many followers, some of them also important thinkers, like Julian Marias. But most are common people who became much more educated and civilized persons by reading his wonderful books. Ortega was one of the rare species of philosophers who expresse his ideas in a very clear prose. Others in this line are Plato and Augustine, or Bertrand Russell, an Ortega contemporary. Meditations on Quixote is a small book where the master strives to give a synthesis of his thought. A synthesis of this synthesis could be given by two of his phrases: "Yo soy yo y mi circunstancia" (I am myself and my circumstance) and " I only offer a way of considering things" (modus res considerandi). A great philosopher and a great writer. His was my main intellectual influence.
