A Classic!
A rare chance to read a detailed study of the development of the match rifle 1860-1900. Covers this fascinating period of rifle development and the search for accuracy at extreme ranges. Includes information on muzzle and breech loading rifles, including Whitworth. Also reprints Metford's observations on the muzzle-loading match rifle.

Themes from Kaplan

Thank god its back . . .
This is one of those books that falls out of print and causes mass panic in graduate student communities as we find ourselves hunting for copies with on-line rare book search engines with no hope for success. Can't find it used when no one will let go of it. Saints be praised, its back. Kaplan's essays 'demonstratives' and 'afterthoughts' are classics and need to be studied by anyone interested in the golden triangle of philosophy (phil. language, mind, and epistemology). Kit Fine's essay on de re modality is excellent, and with articles by Peacocke, Wettstein, Almog, and a host of other friends of Kaplan, no entry will fail to repay serious attention. Do not miss the opportunity to purchase this book.

Towards Gettysburg: A Biography of General John F. Reynolds
Published in Hardcover by Butternut Pr (1988)
Author: Edward J. Nichols
Amazon base price: $30.00
Used price: $68.10
Average review score:

Carefully researched and entertaining biography.
Nichols has presented a well researched biography of a man who commanded the respect and the admiration of an army. The men who fought under him called him "Old Common Sense." They were willing to follow him into Hell itself, and they did. John F. Reynolds was professionally remote, militarily a genius, and personally a shy quiet man. Nichols brings Reynolds to warm life once again in this entertaining and well written biography. You will feel as if you know this general who turned down command of the entire Army of the Potomac, only to die a month later leading a regiment into combat because "that's where he was most needed." You will stand beside the Confederate prisoners of war who rose to their feet in silent respect as the dead Reynolds was carried past them. An inspiring picture of a man whose death made an army pause to weep.

The Unwritten Order

Outstanding look at the old west
The premise of this book, the unwritten order, is so intriguing I wondered how John Edward Ames would pull this off. Sudden death at the start of this novel grabs the reader and pull you through the long trail of redemtion. This is one of the finest westerns I have ever read (and I've read a lot - I'm a professional writer). Mr. Ames has painted a vast canvass with memorable characters and gripping situations. This is one fine novel.

A great resource
I was required to buy Visual Anthropology for my Visual Sociology class my sophomore year of college. This is one i didn't sell back to the bookstore after the class was over because it is so useful. It is a great book to help a person learn how to use a camera as a research tool and get the most out of it.

What real scholarship should be
This is a brilliant example of good scholarship. The book is impeccably researched. Of course there are conclusions that are open to debate, but it is difficult to find an area where you could fault the writer's logic. This is the standard work on a very complex subject, and will likely remain so. If only every historian was so objective and paid so much attention to detail, think of how much we would discover. Maybe I'm being too naive.
