This is a simply written book about a little boy who goes through the five stages of grief after the death of his father. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful and the book still brings tears to my eyes everytime I read it. Lucille Clifton is an excellent author who uses simplicity with great beauty. This book is good for young children 3-5 who are trying to understand and deal with grief. I would definitely recommend this with no hesitation!

This is absolutely the best book out there for a young child who has lost a parent. Written by Lucille Cliffton in simple rhyme, it goes through the 5 stages of grief. As the last stage of grief is acceptance, it ends with "and no matter what happens when people die, love doesn't stop and neither will I." The illustrations of this young African American boy and his mother are charcoal line drawings ~~ beautifully illustrating the profound loss this child has suffered, affirming the loss and yet reassuring the reader that acceptance and peace will come.

First of all, anyone who is remotely interested in this book has a problem. And if that person acknowledges that this problem is an enthusiasts addiction to motorcycles then the low cost and high content of this book delivers. For the motorcycle enthusiast who prefers an unmolested motorcycle as delivered from the factory, this is probably not your cup of tea; but be forwarned, pick this book up and you may join the dark side. For the motorcyclist who can't seem to leave his (or her!) trusty motorcycle well enough alone, this book is a motivational spike that would rate on your Richter scale. Beautifully finished, highly modified motorcycles abound in this color packed hard-bound book; and for less than it costs to change the oil in your bike. All the Japanese manufacturers are represented along with Ducati, Buell, Norton, and two bikes that almost defy the description of "motorcycle"; but I won't spoil the rocket fuelled ending, after all this is a book. The only drawback is that this book leaves the reader wanting more. More detail on each bike, and more bikes to examine in detail. The bottom line is this: if you have ever thought, spoken, or written the word MOTORCYCLE then buy this book. The price is right and the content is phenomenal. Guaranteed!

It begins with a brief history of the streetfighter craze and contains nearly all current configurations possible- 2 strokes, 4 strokes, rotarys, turbos, N2O, and even a jet powered trike! If your taste for the ultimate sportbike includes art that strays from the mainstream production models as well as all-out brute force, this book is for you. A bargain at twice the price. I've just ordered the 1996 Edition and am waiting for the 1998 to become available soon. I find it facinating reading and use it as a reference book to look up facts when I'm watching an old favorite star in a movie. Its very interesting to know when they died and from what cause. Also, interesting to know where they're buried, (surprising many times).

Final Curtain is THE best book on grave hunting! It is very up to date (1996) and is a fabulous reference book! Unfortunately, Mr. Jarvis died last September, but his daughter is suppose to be taking up the book! I hope she does!!

This is a must book for anyone seeking an understanding of POW life as well as a better understanding of events inside Japan during WWII. Edward Hale takes us on a journey from a carefree life in Guam to Japan as a POW for most of WWII. Helen Gordon, Hale's neice, does a good job of editing Hale's memoirs. After reading the book, I had a much better understanding of how war and POW status impacts human behavior. Gordon is to be commended for making Hale's wonderful memoirs available to the world. This is one of the best books about POW's I have read. For this reason, I gave this book 5 stars.

Beaten, starved and constantly terrorized, Hale's story renews your faith in America and its fighting men. Hale's story of his Navy life in Guam just before the war is a prelude to his poignant experience as a POW. As a reader, you will feel the thunder of bombs, the palpable fear as shot and shell destroy your world... and the gut wrenching fear to know your life is at the mercy of murderous Japanese soldiers.

Hale's is a story or bravery and courage that bears retelling until the end of time. Unknown to the men and women of Guam, they were forfeited to the Japanese months before the war by the decisions of Roosevelt and Churchill, intent upon defeating Hitler. Transported to Japan, the men suffered as slaves to the Japanese war efforts and ultimately saved by the dropping of the atom bombs. Hale's story belongs on the shelf of any student of World War II.

In this brief but comprehensive book which deals with the sources of human unhappiness, the author discusses psychiatric iillnesses that are biologically caused and those which are caused by life experiences and reveiws the medical, psychological and social treatments that are effective in its treatment. From Adversity to Invincibility is a practical and readable book. Its contents deliver solid information making everyone's emotional health readily understandable to them. There are only 115 easy to read pages in this new book, but they provide a wonderful user's manual for discerning our underlying goodness. Dr. Everett's years of practicing and teaching psychiatry have led him to recognize that there is an altruistic core in our nature that needs to be nurtured as we live our day-to-day lives. You will also learn common sense approaches to dealing with life. The fundamentals presented here inspire hope and they include his thoughtful solutions to the various kinds of emotional problems that we face. Dr. Everett is familiar with the fact that almost everyone needs assistance in addressing the problems that we encounter. Simple lessons fill this book with guidelines which teach us how to overcome the many emotional obstacles facing us. The author suggests to us that we are capable of emotional invincibility and his book illustrates exactly how it is within our reach. I especially liked the emphasis on building our lives so that we may always enjoy the wonderful satisfaction that comes with acting on our innate altruism. It is refreshing in the year 2000 to have altruism acknowledged as an active ingredient of mental health. This book is well worth reading. The information presented is easy to grasp and applying it will no doubt improve one's life immeasurably.

This is truly the good stuff from the Silver-Age. By the time Sub-Mariner got his own comic, the stories had degraded to mush. But this collection of stories is a very good read. The opening plotline of Sub-Mariner's "quest" for the Trident of Neptune is the best of the bunch. Sub-Mariner was not this good in the 1940s and John Byrne's version in the 1990s was not this good. If only Marvel would issue the Incredible Hulk in a Masterworks Edition featuring the Tales to Astonish stories. What a bargain the kids of the 1960s got with Tales to Astonish! This is a must buy in the Masterworks collection.

WOW! I love this book! Back in the early seventies I came across a giant Sub-Mariner special which featured the first issues of Prince Namor from Tales to Astonish. I was in awe of Gene Colan's (Adam Austin) art. Buying this Marvel Masterworks edition reminded me how much of an influence it was on my own work. Stan Lee's stories are full of grandeur and excitement. Prince Namor, The Sub-Mariner wasn't an easy character to like but once you got use to his regal manner you were hooked into his under seas adventures. Jack Kirby and Bill Everett (Namor's creator) show up later in the series on art chores. However it's Gene Colan's amazing rendition of life under water that makes this strip work as well as it did. I seem to recall that Gene wasn't very fond of the work he did on Namor. The book suffers only in it's reproduction. The film negatives used seem very thin and fail to capture Vince Colletta's finer ink lines. The coloring, though great, is too harsh on the glossy stock Marvel seems insistent on using. A matte surface would really do justice to the work. For those of you who missed out on these tales, buy this book. Stan Lee's revival of Prince Namor is legendary.

I attended the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine longer ago than I care to recall, but I am personally familiar with many of the doctors and incidents depicted in this well-researched and interestingly written book. It contains more facts per page than anything I have ever read (with the possible exception of the Yellow Pages), but that's the way it should be in a history that documents the key years of an institution that changed from a small medical outpost on the prairie to--as the authors brand Oklahoma taxpayers' expectations--a "Harvard on the plains" medical complex. While the school perhaps never achieved that level of academic excellence, it certainly rose far higher than the Oklahoma state legislature and it's turf-protecting politicians had any right to expect, given their meager level of support both financial and political. Politics aside, the 50's and 60's were great times to be living in Oklahoma City, and this book brings back many of my fondest memories--and reminds me of the many brilliant and industrious men and women I met and worked with at the Medical Center. The book captures it all beautifully, and I highly recommend it for anybody interested in the subject.

I found the book to be extremely interesting, and even humorous at times. The book offers a play by play event listing of the establishment of the medical school and tells a candid story of the founders and individuals that were ultimately responsible for what kind of medical facilities, Oklahoma has today. A "must-read" for Medical Students, Educators and generally any History Buff that would enjoy the "inside" story behind the Oklahoma Medical Center. The photographs are a plus.

St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Darien, Conneticut prayed for a miracle and Praise the Lord they got more than one! This is an account of the churches revival and how in praying their way back to Jesus they reached far beyond their expectations in reaching the world literally. The churches membership grew, the congregation began to be discipled from within as well as learn the meaning of fellowship, then the doors burst open into the surrounding community touching lives. The community was set on fire for Jesus and their message about what they had learned spread around the world from tapes to books to seminars. Phillippians 4:9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me-put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. The reason I liked the book so much is that it inspired me and I felt joy as I read each page. The author Bob Slosser wrote in an easy to read and enjoyable style with 268 pages. I just couldn't put the book down and finished is just a couple days.

Bob Slosser's "Miracle in Darien", a story about a small church in Connecticut coming alive in the Holy Spirit is a must read for anyone interested in church development and empowerment in the Spirit. The tale of Fr. Terry Fullam's own spiritual journey and how he empowers the people of a typical Episcopal parish to come to the Spirit is not just enthralling storytelling, but could be used as a guide for small parish development. Slosser makes the process of surrendering control of the church to Jesus seem to be the only way to engage in the church. He also outlines the pitfalls and failures that will happen. The way in which we all try to control our lives and churches for our own ends, rather than letting God control both is brought vividly to life in this book. Every vestry or lay council in every Christian church, regardless of denomination should be embrace this book as essential to their mission and discovery.

I first was introduced to Loren Eisley by a roommate in graduate school who read aloud to me the final essay in this book. It is entitled, "The Brown Wasps," and if you've never read anything by Eisley, you might want to start there. Among many things, this particular essay is about memory, home, and the place of death in life - themes that run throughout the book whose essays are intimate narratives that intermingle meditations on science and personal history. Having now written these words I feel they miss the mark in recommending this book becuase the themes of Eisley's work seem more experiential than concrete to me, which is the case for many truths about life - truths that can be captured more by the feelings evoked by a time and a place than by mere words alone. And yet, his words do a remarkable job of evoking past times and places, locating them in your present life and providing a context for understanding their meaning. If you read this book, perhaps you'll want to share it with a friend, as my friend did with me, and I have with many good friends since. Eisley communicates the happy/sad, excited/melancholic, naive/wise tensions of nostalgia like no one else I've read.

Theodosius Dobzhansky described Eiseley as "...a Proust miraculously turned into an evolutionary anthropologist," and his works are greatly admired by Ray Bradbury. This was the second book I read of his after "The Immense Journey" and it was no let down at all! It too is haunting, beautiful, disturbing, hopeful, fearful, and immensely imaginative.

Here's a taste, from the chapter The Places Below: "If you cannot bear the silence and the darkness, do not go there; if you dislike black night and yawning chasms, never make them your profession. If you fear the sound of water hurrying through crevices toward unknown and mysterious destinations, do not consider it. Seek out the sunshine. It is a simpler prescription. Avoid the darkness."
