If you are familiar with Everett you will recognize the style, if you are not this is a treasure worth owning. I found it emensely entertaining. I read it to my two year old often. Although he enjoys the story and the wonderful illustrations, I am looking forward to when he recogizes the many levels of this book. This one we will enjoy for quite a while because it is timeless.

Pretty good book about how to sound educated when you converse.

Given the colossal size of the federal government in the United States and its pervasive influence on our economic lives, it is surprising that the growth of government isn't the subject of most history books written about the twentieth century. Unfortunately, the list of good books on the subject is surprisingly short. Fortunately, Price Fishback and Shawn Kantor have written a book that can be added to that short list. Indeed, their book, with its rigorous analysis of both markets and politics, is a model for others to follow.

Fishback and Kantor's exhaustive research provides new insights into why almost all states adopted workers' compensation laws between 1910 and 1921, even though related reform proposals were stillborn. [They] examine the timing of adoption across states and conclude that "progressive" politicians played only a marginal role. The strength of employer and worker interest groups was crucial. The occurrence of a crisis in the old liability system was also extremely important.

Probably the greatest shortcoming of this book is a failure to go back one more step to explain the origins of this crisis in greater detail. Whatever the reasons, the origin of the workers' compensation system, like the growth of government during much of the rest of the twentieth century, hinged crucially on a crisis.

Ultimately, the, Fishback and Kantor's painstaking analysis gives a clear picture of the operation of the American market and political system in an era when the logic of the welfare state was still generally rejected and when other programs that eventually became part of the welfare state (old-age pensions, unemployment insurance and subsidies, and sickness insurance) were not politically viable.

She helps out at Richard's shipping company, keeping the books. Ultimately, she reveals the identity of someone who has been embezzling from his company. Richard and Lorrance also become involved. But Lorrance has been keeping secrets. When some of her secrets come to light, misunderstandings drive the lovers apart. Soon, both of them are back in France--and in danger. This is a grand, old-fashioned adventure, rich in character and detail. Read this one--it's great fun

Well, I am trying to study it...... !

Everett Reimer wrote a facinating important book about why schools can't work. He speaks only briefly about the problems schools have in educating students (we all already know that), but rather talks about the societal problems inherent in having institutional schools. He speaks about how schools give children an institutional mindset akin to what criminals get in prison. Everett also speaks to the gargantuan waste of money that occurs within the school systems, at our expense. Those who like the works of John Holt and John Taylor Gatto will find much to like her as well.

Please, if you can, read this book with an open mind. It will really make you reconsider how you view childhood, education, and the effects of over programming our children.

Most fascinating about this book? It was published in 1971! The problems with schools aren't new, they just getting more new coverage.

"Wayside School Is Falling Down" By: Bruce Coville is an extreamly funny book. I recamend it to anyone between 7 and 12. If you like humor, read this book. Wayside School is not your averege school, there is dead rats that talk, strange and ugly food, and the school is THIRTY FLOORS! Also there is a sequel "Wayside School Gets A Little Stranger" where even wierder things happen.

We enjoyed this cute story of a child making friends with a skunk! My son like the part where the skunk helped the family in a crisis! It has an easy to follow along text. We liked it!

Dr. Koop is correct in every aspect of this book. His writing is clear and easy to understand. It gives you a great synopsis of all aspects of nutrition that a person would wonder about.

I was looking for the impact that a borderling mother can have on her children and this missed the mark a little. Any thoughts anyone?
