Best advice I recieved in the most difficult decision
This book helped guide me through a very difficult decision. This book helped me deal with the many issues that I feared for my family, children and my wife. This book combined with "Too Good to Leave, Too Bad to Stay" help me make the right choice. The book helped me deal with the feeling and emotions in the decision and the process. I can not recommend this book enough. It does not have all the answers but it is a great place to start!

Insightful, creative, accessible, unpretentious!
As a person who has been involved in professional counselling for years, I was shattered when my marriage of 20 years collapsed this year. I found this book in my university library, read it reluctantly, and have been enormously helped by its excellent layout and very realistic, practical application. The stage approach was helpful without be prescriptive, and both my ex-wife and I found its clarity most helpful in recognising and owning our place is the process. Unquestionably helped reduce conflict levels in our separation and divorce. Theory is cleary present, but well integrated with application and as valid for my South African context as it must be for its American setting. Many, many thanks!

Most helpful tool since my separation.
This book has been the most helpful tool since my recent separation. After 22 years of marriage, my husband and I have separated. This book lists all of the predictable emotions, what to expect's, and what to do's. Very valuable to me! It has helped to understand my own feelings and know that it is normal to feel this way. I've read the chapters past the point of where we are so I can be better prepared just in case. Thanks.

PRACTICAL TIPS TOWARDS YOUR DREAMS
As a professor who has taught and conducted research on three continents I have had the privilege of meeting people from a wide variety of backgrounds. It has always struck me as unfortunate that many otherwise intelligent and energetic people go through their days and nights without any real direction. Prepare for Greatness may be just the guide for you if you are still struggling with your goals and direction in life. Comments from successful people from a wide variety of backgrounds provide a strong centerpiece for this book, allowing the reader to extract from the different experiences what may he or she deems potentially useful. With comments from leaders such as Jean Charest, the recently elected leader of Quebec, Canada; Iona Campagnolo, Governor-General of British Columbia, Nobel laureates, psychologists, educators, entrepreneurs, and other influential leaders, the reader can be certain of getting really invaluable advice. Prepare for Greatness is clearly written and moves at a pace that is guaranteed to keep you reading till the end. If I could put one book in the hand of every high school or university graduate or for that matter that of any depressed, demoralized, or downsized worker, it would undoubtedly be Prepare for Greatness. Read it for the hope and inspiration but most of all for the practical tips that might be just what you need to get you moving in the direction of your long-cherished dreams!

If you want to be happy, you must have this book.
Prepare for Greatness is not like "another self-help book". It really teaches you how to overcome all the hurdles that keeps you away from your success. If you are afraid of your future. THE book to have re: the beans
For anyone who struggled to understand why the nephron concentrates, then dilutes, then concentrates again the urine, this book will do much to ease your pain. Since medical school I've purchased Editions 1, 3, & 5, just so that I could keep up with my interns & residents. Here's how he does it:
#1: short book, (you know how intimidating those tomes can be)
#2: lots of diagrams
#3: end-of-chapter questions (with answers & explanations)

If you want to understand the Kidney, no matter where you are in your studies or practice, I wholeheartedly recommend this text.

A lifesaver
Renal physiology can be very difficult to truly understand, and yet an understanding of it is essential to understanding so many aspects of physiology, pathology, and pharmacology. Studying diuretics for cardio pharm is nightmarish unless you understand the physiology of the loop of Henle. Vander takes this difficult yet important subject and makes it easy to understand. The book reads extremely quickly, and the flow-charts and diagrams are amazing. I never even opened Berne & Levy for renal phys--I read Vander's book (which is no longer than B&L's renal chapters) and cruised through renal phys. I am writing this review now, a year after I took physiology, because I am now studying for the USMLE Step 1. I have not looked at Vander's book in a year, but I still remember renal phys, and reviewing it now is the easiest part of my studying (the only easy part, in fact). That is because, thanks to Vander, I actually understand renal physiology. A great book!!

Vander on the kidneys.
For any medical student that needs a comprehensive, but easily understood explanation of the structure and function of kidneys, I highly recommend Renal Physiology by Vander. It is very well written, and covers all the basic principles that you will need to know to understand pathologies associated with the kidneys.

Brave and wise tales
Among the brave and wise rabbis in these stories come demons, ghosts, fools and even the clever Hershel of Ostropol, who tricked the Demon King in another Kimmel Chanukah story.

But our son especially loves the story for the fourth night. The Lord tells King Solomon the dimensions for the Temple he must build and what materials to use. But King Solomon may not use iron, "for iron is a metal of war." As to how, without iron, builders can hew timbers for the ceiling and split stones for the walls, the Lord remains silent.

Then Nathan the prophet tells King Solomon of the wondrous creature called the Shamir, fashioned by God from beams of light. Although no bigger than a barleycorn, it has the power to split massive stones.

Solomon calls for an army captain to confront Ashmodai, king of the demons, who has the Shamir. Benayahu ben Yehoyada volunteer, and took with a spade, a fleece, a jar of Greek wine, an iron chain with a holy charm carved on each link, King Solomon's magic signet ring--and the wise King's plan.

He came to a mountain, at whose foot the winged demon king Ashmodai landed. Benayahu dug a hole beneath the cistern where the great demon king drank, letting all the water run out. The ring gave him strength to move the cistern's stone cover. Then he hid.

Ashmodai returned and drank from the well. It was wine, which soon made him dance, and then sleep. Benayahu bound the sleeping demon king, who insisted on telling the secret location of the Shamir only to Solomon himself. In court, the demon confessed that the Lord had taken the Shamir away.

Solomon called the birds and asked if any of them had seen the Shamir. An albatross had--on a rock in the middle of the ocean. Benayahu straddles the great bird, and flies off to retrieve the Shamir, returning with it to Jerusalem. "And so Solomon built the Temple, without iron tools of any kind." The Shamir was then returned to its rock in the northern sea--until the Messiah comes, and a new Temple rises in Jerusalem.

Each of the seven other tales is as brave and wise as this one. Alyssa A. Lappen

Great book for reading nightly
I found this book at my childs school library and found it to be a wonderful complement to our nightly Hanukkah celebration. Every night I've read a new story and we've talked about what each story means. I think its a great book, full of meaningful stories.

A book for the entire family!
A very worthy collection of short stories that will appeal to the entire family. The stories are sometimes clever, sometimes humorous, but always enjoyable. This is a book that can be read silently alone, or out loud to others. The author also includes a very touching story concerning his collection of the stories in this book.

The Three Princes
I absolutely loved the story line in this book! A Princess is given 3 Princes to choose from to marry. She has a difficult time deciding and in the end chooses the best one. A very fun find for children, and a valuable lesson is learned as well. Definitely an enjoyable book. Great for Multicultural classrooms or integrating Arab culture into the room!

A Great Book for ESL Education
As an ESL teacher, I'm always looking for books to share as a read aloud to honor my students' native cultures. Not only is this a noteworthy book, but the illustrations are magnificent. My students from the Middle East always enjoy the sharing of this story with their new friends. I applaud the princess in this tale for her choice of a prince. Her wisdom is extraordinary; she provides a worthwhile lesson for all students.

A CLASSIC TALE
The plot will be familiar to anyone who has seen the old silent movie "Thief of Bagdad." This is a Middle Eastern tale of three princes who search the world for rare treasures in order to win the hand of a princess. Will true love triumph? Wonderful telling of a classic story.

Best of both worlds
The introduction of the beliefs and dictums of geopolitics, the school of thought bringing together geography and international relations, in space theory and practice was, admittedly, long overdue. This is masterfully accomplished in this book, which, while been accessible and democratic in its style, is highly informed and thought-provoking.
With the traditional struggles over terrestrial supremacy being far from over, the arena of space offers a new field for the realization of the power strategies of the contemporary "Great Powers". This is turn directly affects the power relations back home (Earth, that is), shaping thus the political landscape of the near future.
The author, drawing from a plethora of geopolitical, historical and space-related records, has produced a compelling and essential read, concretly laying the foundations for a new, inter-disciplinary and highly relevant ground.

best of emerging space power thought
Dolman's thoughts in Astropolitik should be essential reading for anyone interested in space power and its relationship to the security of freedom, democracy and the United States in the 21st century. This book will definitely be required reading for military space leaders in the future, and should be read by every space leader or enthusaist today be they from the military, civil, or commercial sectors. Realist politics and unilateral action may be disheartening to some, and many may be opposed to Dolman's 'advice' at the end, but the logic and arguments he presents are sound and must be addressed by any potential opposition.
In all, Astropolitik will become a classic of space power theory.

Timeless gems
E T A Hoffmann was no ordinary man. He started life as a composer and then moved to writing stories. There are several of his sketches reproduced in this book and these show flashes of great talent too (you can see one on the cover). Hoffmann's influence is enormous in the musical world (Tchiakovsky, Delibes, Offenbach, Wagner all drew inspiration from Hoffmann). And there is something timeless in these stories even into the 21st century - there are psychological puzzles, studies of behaviour and myth, stories of automata that Philip Dick, Cordwainer Smith or Isaac Asimov would have been proud of, there are links not surprisingly into the world of music (you mustn't miss 'Rath Krespel') and the world of art (see 'Tobias Martin, Master Cooper'). Somehow Hoffmann makes ancient technologies and methods fresh and exciting - barrel making, sailing, alchemy, mining. Unfortunately the most famous of Hoffmann's stories (Nutcracker) is one of the weakest for me, and the one with the greatest reputation ('The Golden Flower Pot') suffers in this anthology by a translation that didn't engage me as well as those of other stories. My favourite stories are 'The Sand-Man', 'Rath Krespel' and 'Tobias Martin'. Here's a brief quote from 'Tobias Martin' that appealed to me especially: 'It sometimes happens that the deepest sorrow, if it can find tears and words, dissolves into a mild melancholy, so that perhaps even a gentle shimmer of hope begins to beam faintly through the heart.' Hoffmann is often sentimental but this is more than offset by an unpredictable exoticness.

Fantasia with Automata and Vegetable King, etc.
Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann was born Ernst Theodor Wilhelm - he changed his name in honour of Mozart, and music was his first and possibly greatest love. He was a brilliant critic, a talented painter and caricaturist and, by all accounts, a very serviceable composer. All these elements - music, the pictorial sense, and the critic's sharp probing intelligence as displayed in the present review - feed into the stories, which perhaps is why they turned out to be his most lasting achievement. The ten in this collection are tales of the fantastic (Hoffmann is also credited by some with inventing the detective story with "Madame de Scudery", not included here, which predates, and may have influenced, Edgar Allan Poe's pioneering efforts in the genre) and include the four which provided the basis for Offenbach's opera. The style, like Mozart's, is bright, energetic and often comic; the substance, as with caricature, mixes the bizarre with the mundane in a fashion quite unlike that of anyone else you've ever read, even among Hoffmann's batallions of readers, followers and imitators. The general effect is strikingly original, often disturbing, sometimes hilarious and, not infrequently, loony - not at all what one would expect from the last of the German Romantics. This volume also boasts several illustrations scrawled by the author, a helpful introduction by E F Bleiler, and Dover Books' usual robust construction and reasonable pricing. Like Lord Dunsany, Hoffmann has been prized more as an influence than a writer. His work has certainly had an incalculable influence on modern fantasy fiction, as well as the detective story, science fiction and the 19th-century "novel of ideas" (Dostoyevsky noted Hoffmann's psychological insight as an influence on his own). But his own best work falls into none of these categories, inventing them all in the service of the author's vision - the mark of a true original, and the best possible reason to read Hoffmann for himself.

Funny, and informative.
This book was that rare mix of entertainment and information. It gives the reader an opportunity to laugh at the goofy things we do as couples, as well as utilize the lessons other newlyweds have learned. I bought one for a wedding gift for a friend, and one for our bookshelf even though we've been married twelve years.

Humorous, insightful and reflective of just-married life.
Crib Notes for the First Year of Marriage provides an insightful and humorous look at newlywed issues from planning the big event to becoming parents. DeMorier uses real-life examples and hypothetical situations to realistically portray the pleasures and pitfalls of transitioning from single to married life. While not an exhaustive how-to manual, this work is comprehensive in its coverage of common (and often unexpected) hurdles to overcome, and does provide useful advice for such everyday issues as money management, dealing with in-laws and chore division. It is aptly named as a concise treatment of the subject with references for more in-depth information. For the reader contemplating marriage, Crib Notes is a witty and useful guide; for the already married, it is a fun look back with plenty of areas in which to recognize our successes and mistakes

Great Resource!
I bought the book as a resource for a paper I was writing. I enjoyed the variety of articles. The annotated Bibliography of forgiveness articles was very helpful. It is a great resource.

Publishers Review
Forgiveness has been practiced for thousands of years within the framework of religious and philosophical systems. The scientific study, however, has begun only recently. This volume represents the wisdom collected from a symposium on the scientific approach to forgiveness sponsored by the John Templeton Foundation. Noted scientists, theologians, and psychologists present their perspectives on forgiveness. Martin Marty discusses The Ethos of Christian Forgiveness and Elliot N. Dorff explains the Jewish perspective. Kenneth Pargament and Mark Rye reveal the method of religious coping; Roy Baumeister, Julie Exline, and Dristin Sommer discuss the roles of victims and the effects of holding grudges. Everett Worthington explains The Pyramid Model of Forgiveness, while Robert Enright and Catherine Coyle elaborate on the model of forgiveness within psychological interventions. To support these premises is an annotated bibliography of research on forgiveness that will provide researchers with the latest findings on the scientific approach. No matter what the perspective, the benefits of forgiveness can be measured and assessed. The good news is that within the data are imbedded the concepts of reconciliation and hope. Through this thorough investigation, we can begin to appreciate the powerful capacity human beings have to forgive and to grow. Everett L. Worthington, Jr., is professor of psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University. In 1986, he published an extensive review of research on religion in counseling and recently provided a 10-year update to this review, which appeared in Psychological Bulletin. Dr. Worthington has published more than 75 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals on the role of spirituality in health and healthcare.
