A Pure Delight
Here is a book that I have been looking for for some time, a book that incorporates the magnificent artwork of the Napoleonic period along with a detailed profile of Napoleon. The result is magic and a pure delight to the eye. Proctor Jones has done a splendid job at merging the two memoirs of Menval (Napoleon's secretary) and Constant (Napoleon's valet) to provide a detailed and intimate account account of Napoleon. This is not a book that details Napoleon's battles or strategic genius but is a book that provides a wonderful insight into his character and personality instead. What comes across is that Napoleon was indeed human with many strengths and weaknesses and is not the ogre or monster as often portrayed by British propaganda. One can see the the unboundless energy, emotion, magnetism and even quirky habits of the man as seen through Menval and Constant. The artwork is plentiful and compliments the events as described in the narrative. This is a superb book, printed on high quality paper and an essential addition to any buff of the Napoleonic period. You will not be disappointed, only delighted.

Wonderful
I will begin this review by saying that I knew Proctor Jones and liked him very much. I had the privlege to travel with him and visit many of his friends while I was living and working France. He was a wonderful man and an enjoyable companion and I will fondly cherish my memories of him.

Even today his memory is still strong for those of us who knew him and his name is a talisman which opens doors which otherwise would be sealed.

Many people claim to have access to special or unknown collections. Proctor was the real deal.

This book was a labor of love for Proctor. He set out to publish pictures that had not been seen in other books...he spent an unbelievable amount of money, time and effort tracking down unpublished art and securing the right to publish it in this book.

He then published this book himself because no publisher would print it at the level of quality he wanted. He was particular about the paper, the binding and the detail of the reproductions...

Proctor then was able to get Jean Tulard to do the preface...virtually impossible for an American author...and even launched the French version of the book at a reception at Malmaison (I was there).

Proctor never intended to make money on the book...It was his intention to bring these works to an audience who would otherwise find them inaccessable. I know for a fact that at the print run he authorized he lost tens of thousands of dollars just on the royalties and fees he paid for the permission to reproduce these paintings.

This book is in a limited print run in English and in French and when they are gone they will be gone. Just like Proctor.

Proctor I will miss you and I thank you for producing this book.

A veritable Napoleonic museum
This is a fantastic book as it includes within its cover a feast of great Napoleonic paintings and memorabilia which is worth the price alone. The text is finely edited by Proctor-Jones, comprising of an interwoven thread based on two memoirs of two men who were closely linked to Napoleon. One was his secretary, C Meneval and the other is his personal valet W Constant.
Every dedicated Napoleonophile should own a copy.

Unforgetable
The Painter and the Wild Swans is one of the most beautiful books I've read. The art work is stunning, the story is unforgetable. This author's other books are also of equal quality. It is utterly, utterly incomprehensible that they are out of stock.

I Have A Hardback Copy
I have a hardback copy of the painter and the wild swans,i got it in north carolina i think that the art work is firt class.

This book demystifies mental illness
As a worker in the field of 'mental health', I found this book to be invaluable in demystifying mental illness and assisting clients in learning about themselves using everyday language they can understand, not the psycho mobo jumbo utilized by psychiatry (to keep people oppressed and thinking they cannot cure themselves)This book, almost 30 years old, is probably more relevant today, particularly as the legions of 'rescuers' become more prevalent in society, i.e. therapists, counselors, probation officers, and all those in favor of the medicalization of behaviors. The books basic premise, that people can solve their own problems and get better on their own by redeciding, is both true and a threat to those who purport otherwise. For further in depth education in demystification, I recommend reading Thomas Szasz.

An excellent Scientific analysis and exegesis of TA
Claude M.Steiner shows great respect to the late E.Berne and analyzes properly and with solid argumentation the Transactional Analysis in a very approachable way. It is very pleasant to read and it is full of useful information and examples for those who wish to implement TA in their lives. I highly recommend this book to those who want to find out what is TA and what are the scripts we live. As E.Berne, Claude M.Steiner disagrees with the way psychiatry is treating people and teaches us how to treat our children and how to develop ourselves intellectually and emotionally.

Scripts People Live
I never write reviews but this book was so incredible. Comprehensive and yet specific enough to give people serious insight into their unconscious decisions and how to change that. Mr. Steiner examines how society promulgates and promotes certain behaviors as well as our parents, teachers, etc. etc. This book is a must read for anyone truly interested in the inner-workings of themselves and others. VERY ENLIGHTENING!

A Great Book
Active filter design was my favorite class when I was in graduate school, which uses this book as the text. I enjoyed it very much since it is well-written and I really learned a lot from it. The contents are organized so well from basic concepts to comprehensive theory and then to the various practical examples. I like this book not only because it is a good text book for study, but it is also a must for your reference collection as an engineer since this book is a complete theoretical and practical guide for active filter design. Now, I am working as an Electrical engineer focusing on Digital Signal Processing, and I am so glad that I have this book in hand because I always need to refer to it during my work. As a real cookbook for success in filter design, this book will benefit the lay person as well as the experienced engineer.

A definite text in active filter design.
Chapter 1 of this book introduces the engineer/student to all the basic concepts throughout the book. Many novel concepts are introduced here, as well as some little-known techniques that are still quite relevant today. Everything is tied together towards the end of the book. The final chapter dealing with components is a must-read for anyone wishing to understand components: MIL rating, reliability, drift, etc. This book presents a thorough treatment that is useful to the student as well as the practicing engineer.

An Excellent Book!
A practical book describing a step by step procedure in designing active filtering. The book is great for beginner and graduate level courses. It is also an excellent one as a reference in industry in filtering and signal processing. I read and learned the entire book in my master program 9 years ago and I still go back and use it.

Take It With You When You Go
This book will guide you step by step (literally) through the magnificant temples of Angkor. And even if you weren't planning to go, you will want to for sure, after viewing Michael Freeman's superb photographs and reading Claude Jacques' expert commentary.

No matter where you wander on the very large site of Angkor, Freeman and Jacques are right alongside you, suggesting places to look and explaining what you are looking at. There are maps and temple plans, a glossary, and an index. For visitors with limited time, the suggested itineraries (from one to seven days' length) will let you make the most of your visit.

The book is especially helpful for photographers. Freeman, who has photographed professionaly at Angkor for over a decade, describes the best vantage points and subjects, suggests the best time of day to shoot, and provides itineraries that take you to each location just when the light is best.

The book is well designed and contains many helpful features. For example, a cross-referenced list of architectural features and mythological scenes makes it easy to locate temples that contain whatever the visitor is most interested in seeing.

In short, carrying this book with you is like having an expert photographer and historian as personal guides during your visit to Angkor. You probably won't even need to engage an actual guide, unless you want to pick up a bit of local color; everything you need is right there in the book.

A first Class guide to a fantastic set of buildings
This book is a fantastic combination of pictures and facts for people wanting to visit the Angkor temples. The pictures stir the imagination and the text provides the facts to go with the pictures.

In fact I recently used this book as my guide while visiting Angkor. It provides a section for each of the most-visited temples and will also give you information on suggested time to put aside for each visit and the best time to go. In fact, my guide at Angkor said this was the best guide book he had seen, and I saw other people using this same book to guide themselves around the temples like I did.

This book provides suggested itineries to the temples and the best times to visist for photography. whether you can actually manage to combine the two is debatable on a short visit. The books main downfall is not its content, but its weight which is quite heavy because of the good quality paper used.

The climate (extremely hot and humid - air conditioning is a worthwhile investment) can make visiting these monuments as trial at times, but they are worth the effort. All the buildings are unique, covered in exquiste carvings (which books can only hint at) and original. Some are still partly swallowed by the jungle. Straight out of indiana Jones.

Get this book, let your imagination wander and visit these amazing ruins if you can before too many other tourists turn up - for they are a world wonder not to be missed. And don't forget your camera - these are places begging to be photographed.

Ancient Angkor
A lovingly prepared compilation of superb color photographs, maps, history and scholarly explanations of the major world monument that is Angkor Wat. The authors thoughtfully include suggested itineraries ( ranging from one to six days ), sites ranked by interest, peak times and locations for photographing and even helpful suggestions for accomodations. A must for planning a visit to Angkor Wat or for preserving memories.

Black September to Desert Storm
I have read numerous books on the "situation" in the Middle East but they all read like History books. This is the exception. Salhani writes about his memories of war with humour and yet realism that makes you understand the life of a journalist in these situations. It was a page turner and I enjoyed it immensely.I do not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. For a comprehensive look at the Lebanese civil war et al,this is the book. Enlightnening, informative, humorous and yet touching. Salhani opens his heart to us in print and one cannot help but respond.

It is a book that reveals the hidden side of war
Black September to Desert Storm is a book about the backstage of war.

It is easy to read and instructive not only about the comlex issue of the Middle East but also about Middle Easterns themselves. Most of all it shows through one journalist what covering comlex news events could look like.

Nobody can reveal the absurd and totally surealistic face of war better than a news photographer.

One might find it hard to laugh about events that shook the world with horror, but Salhani shows you how strange enough even in the hardest situations some humour is hidden. Professionals who hop from one war to another mentally survive by cherishing that side.

One might find it even harder to imagine that the most feared terrorist, soldier of fortune or sniper, can also have a human side to him.

If you are someone who reads newspapers and are interested in knowing how news gets to you, this book is a must.

Fascinating, touching and often humorous.
I thought Black September to Desert Storm was a fascinating look at 15 years of unrest in the Middle East through one reporter's eyes. The fact that the author seems to be smart, funny, observant and versatile makes the book easy to read and the complex political and social situations that form the backdrop to his adventures simpler to understand. No one book can capture the entire scope of the Middle East's continuing conflicts, but Salhani is able to show the ludicrous side of these myriad struggles as well as the human tragedies they engender. He does so with compassion and empathy as well as the cold eye of a cynic who has seen too much to be easily fooled. I found myself caught up in the human stories, fascinated and amused by the bizarre cast of characters which populate these pages, but I also felt anger and frustration at the bullheadedness and stubborn pride of the politicians and military leaders whose fault it is these conflicts will seemingly never end. Also, his candid insider's descriptions of the life of a war correspondent and the antics of the foreign press corps were astonishing and often hilarious. If you want to read an enjoyable book that's easy to understand but will still and enlighten you about the Middle East and foreign journalism, I strongly recommend Black September to Desert Storm.

Claude Msing Around: Meeting the Challenge of Multiple Sclerosis

This book doesn't MeSs around!
Having read a number of books about Multiple Sclerosis, I was very impressed with this one. Not only does it destroy some of the frightening myths surrounding the illness, it provides practical ways of coping with some of the problems it brings. All of this is done with humour, and illustrated with fun cartoons of Claude, 'the dog with MS'! Fun aside however, the author, John Mythen, is not afraid to discuss some of the more sensitive aspects of dealing with MS, such as urinary and sexual problems, which he gives full and frank coverage. If you have been diagnosed with MS, or have had indications that you soon may be, then I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is well-written, informative, straightforward,...and fun to read, and you can't say that about many books dealing with Multiple Sclerosis!

Great humor from a terrific fellow.
I have enjoyed John's cartoons and terrific attitude for months now, since first meeting him via the World Wide Web. I have ordered enough of his books now to give them to many of my friends and family members who have experienced the many sides of multiple sclerosis first hand with me. Yes, my hat is off to John!

Excelent Book
I have bought 2 copies (one for a friend too). It is an excellent book. And the cartoons are great. I have commended it to my MS branch to buy a copy for loan and informed other branch members through the newsletter with this line:

BOOK : CLAUDE MSing AROUND - John Mythen ISBN 0-9694457-0-9

The author, a British-born Canadian, has MS and is a cartoonist. The book is a great read and ideal for those newly-diagnosed or volunteers wanting to know something about MS. It combines a good summary of essential information combined with humorous cartoons to give you a lift. Definitely should be in our branch bookshop available for loan with our other books and videos.

While it does delve into a life of a slacker, Claude shines through with a magic and humility.

I hope you enjoy this masterpiece by Edward George as much as I did...

Original, descriptive and modern Poetry
It is clear that Edward T. George provides us with a very descriptive and original text in Claude's Life. This is a very modern piece that includes humor. Hopefully we will hear more from this author in the near future.

Experiencing God Study Bible
This Bible is the best I have ever owned. There is a section called Prepare to Meet God at the beginning of most chapters, with ideas about things to look for while reading. There are thought-provoking questions with verse references at the end of the chapters. The biographical sketches are awesome. There are wide margins, with room to take notes. The New King James translation is extremely close to the intended meaning; when I look up a word in the original Greek or Hebrew, invariably it's the same word that is in this version, or a very close synonym. If you're only going to have one Bible, this is the one to get!

Excellent devotional study bible
This is likely one of the best study bibles out there for personal devotions and small study groups. Henry Blackaby and Claude King open up and make alive the Scriptures - where real application to everyday life can be understood and made by the bible student!

When using this bible, the student quickly understands and sees that God continues to talk to us today. The study tools incorporated into the tome are thought provoking and simple to apply. One of the best features is the "Prepare to Meet God" and the "Did You Notice?" segments sprinkled throughout the scriptural text. These tools help the student to understand that the spiritual life is real and doable. These segments combine doctrine, history, and application with ease and they spark the faith of those who read them.

As well, at the back of the book there is a 'God Focus' section that defines the Doctrines of the faith - giving a definition, 'contents and context,' 'experiencing God,' 'a Fresh Encounter, and scriptural references to the particular doctrine highlighted and discussed.

This particular study bible is a must-have for those who want to gain a deeper understanding, have a better hold on, and a fresh encounter with the Lord, in His love, grace, wisdom, et al.

The bonus of this particular version is the New King James Version text... all the poetics of the Old King James updated and far more readable. This one's a gem.

I highly recommend it to one an all.

An excellent study bible from teens to seniors.
This is an excellent study bible. It turned me to the word of god. Before I just read the bible, now I understand it.

Some times you just have to say it...........
This book is wonderful! The pictures are great and the story is lovely.
My 7 year old refers to Lola as the little girl whose cheeks keep getting biggger until the words just have to come out.
The book only takes about 5 minutes to read but the message will last a life time. It tells children, and parents, how important it is that we tell the people we love, "I love you, I love you, I love you so much!"
This would be a great book for new parents to begin reading to their bundle of joy right from the start.
A favorite in our home and is sure to be one in your home too.

A Sweet Must Have
If you are like me-bring tissues. It's just so sweet, I cry every time and my son likes it so much that he still requests it (at almost 7).

Wonderful story and illustrations
I purchased this book in Dutch when I was visiting Holland a few weeks ago. I always purchase a childrens' book for a little friend of mine when I travel overseas. Sometimes I'm able to find something in the native language with an English translation. Or, I buy the native language version and get some help with a translation. I spent quite a while looking through the childrens' section in an Amsterdam bookstore and fell in love with the story (which I thought I understood in spite of my lack of understanding of Dutch) and the illustrations. I got some help translating the book and will be curious to see how close my version comes to the published one! The illustrations are wonderful. I think they will appeal to 2-5 year-olds and also to the adults reading to them. There are some wonderful little details in them.
