A Valuable Contribution To The History Of Architecture.
The Great Houses Of Paris is an exquisitely illustrated history of the grand town houses known as "Hotel Particuliers." They are considered to be the equivilent of the Italian Palazzi. This work examines their rise and near fall from the Middle Ages, through the Second Empire. All of them are now Historic Residences. Size was not a crucial criterion for these sumptous town houses to be designated "Hotel Particulier," but, rather an owner's rank and wealth. This work is most successful in tracing the social and political history in which these mansions survived. Indeed, many notables graced the grand salons, such as Thomas Jefferson, And Madame De Pompadour, and with this book we can get a glimpse into the past and how these people lived. Today, few of these grand houses remain in private hands, and many have been turned into luxurary apartments.

Overall, A highly important work that makes a first-rate contribution to the history of Architecture.

Great masterpieces by Claude Monet

wonderful guide to monet for any level of interest
This is a tremendous, large book -- about 12 inches by 15. A thoughtful introduction places Monet within the context of the artistic world, followed by 47 two-page spreads in chronological order -- on the right hand side of each a fine color reproduction and on the left a few paragraphs that are well-written, with information about Monet's life at the time and insightful remarks about the techniques used as well as the picture's significance to Monet and to the art world.

I learned a lot reading this book, and not just about Monet. I also came to appreciate the artist even more than I had before, and feel better able to articulate why he was important. I loved this book and will seek out more in the series or by this author.

Highly recommended.

a different sci fi comic
when Jean Claude Mezieres' and Pierre Christin's comic "Valerian"
was published in France for the first time it was different fromn other comics in the same genre. It featured a strong, female character, Laureline and some great designed aliens, to me "Valerian" is the best sci fi comic and if you have good taste you'll think that too.

This is the book to read..
for anyone interested in the subject. The author treats both the
native tradition and the reception of Western mathematics with
the highest scholarship. One of the most significant themes is
the conflict between the combinatoric spirit of Chinese mathematics,
akin to modern group theory and algebra, and the synthetic
Euclidean system introduced by European missionaries.
The initial Chinese puzzlement at what seemed an artificially
contrived structure will amuse those who have endured traditional
geometry and those struggling with Chinese itself.

The bible of hypergraphs
Not to be confused Graphs and Hypergraphs (another of his books), Claude Berge's Hypergraphs focuses solely on the structures also known as "set systems". For the curious, a hypergraph consists of a set V and a set E of subsets of S. A graph is a special case of a hypergraph where each element of E has cardinality two.

Published in 1989, this book has become, by default, the authoritative text on hypergraphs. It does not delve into more advanced, technical results (e.g.: asymptotics, etc...) but instead covers all the fundamental material related to hypergraphs (e.g.: Helly property, Konig property, Kruskal-Katona, etc...). Since hypergraphs are usually not part of standard curricula, this book has definitely carved out its own niche. Practically every paper which mentions hypergraphs (written since 1989) references it.

This book appears to be written for practicing mathematicians (or sufficiently sophisticated students) who have stumbled upon a combinatorial problem and are in need of some basic (though non-obvious) results. Thus, in many cases, results are presented somewhat tersely and with little context or motivation with the implicit assumption that the reader already knows what hypergraphs are good for and is skillful enough to navigate the densely packed theorems.
