the ancestor of the adventure book
If you liked Into Thin Air or The Perfect Storm, search out all of Ella Maillart's books. She was a female adventurer back when women didn't even travel to civilized places, much less uncivilized ones. Her books are inspiring to read. I'm amazed at all the places she sought out around the globe. What a woman!

Damp Camp is innovative, provocative, and a lot of fun.
This is the kind of book that kids love to imitate. I have seen school classes take off on its two word rhymes and make books of their own. The images are very natural to kids used to computer screens; it's the grown-ups who lag in their visual skills. While Damp Camp is definitely about summer camp, it is also about having fun with words and about connecting words with experience. Buy and try!

Evocative poetry for children and adults
This is a beautiful book and will be especially valued by those who have visted Mesa Verde in person. What struck me most about it (in addition to the beautiful illustrations) was that the text, while evoking a child's imagination, is also sophisticated poetry that appeals to an adult sensibility.

a decisive American life--and a first rate biography
Ella Baker must be the most underrated figure in U.S. history. There are plenty of Presidents who have done less to shape their own times than Ella Baker. She decisively shaped two of the most important national civil rights organizations--the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference--and was the single most decisive figure in a third--the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Only Martin Luther King Jr. can be considered a rival in importance to the African American freedom movement, and yet most Americans have never even heard of Ella Baker. This exhaustively researched and well written biography should go a long way toward filling that gap.

This is a thoughful, analytical, and well-told story about a uniquely important American political life. It is a work of central importance in United States history and especially the history of the African American freedom movement. It is a cutting edge work of black women's history, too. I plan to buy a stack of them for Christmas presents, and to assign this book to my students for many years to come.

a competent biography
I found this book in the juvenile biography section of the library, although the information given doesn't indicate that it might be suitable for teens. In my opinion, both teens and adults could read it with profit. It covers much of the same ground as Bud Kliment's book but goes into a little more detail. All the photos are grouped together in the middle of the book, which is probably a less appealing placement for teens. I didn't like the sans serif typeface; most people find this style of type more difficult to read.

Rejoice in Ella's independence & self-sufficiency
Ella is a tiny mouse with a very big imagination. Every time she asks her older brothers to let her play with them, they refuse. "You'd be scared" or "You're too small," "You can't even climb," say Joe, Jack and Jim. So Ella has no choice by play alone and so she makes the best of it by making up all sorts of games. She finds a cat whisker and pretends she's tamed a wild rainbow cat. She spies a dandelion and imagines she's tickling an elephant with it until he sneezes. She picks up a stone and pretends it's the sore tooth she pulls from a dragon's mouth. Soon, her brothers realize that Ella 's not too scared, too small or too unable to do anything, and that she plays the best games of all. Soon they're all playing her newest game - Captain Ella and her brave pirate crew - and all's well with the family that 's learned to play together. Anyone who's ever felt left out will rejoice in Ella's independence, self-sufficiency, and ultimate victory in just doing things her own way.

A quintet of creative, colorful, musical children.
My children and I have checked Five Live Bongos out of the library at least a dozen times in the past two years. The frazzled parents are true to life - and yet encourage the creative energy of their brood. The kids get along great - a wonderful example in a world so full of conflict. They work hard to have fun, which is the most important work of childhood. The rhythmic text and colorful artrwork delight my three year old and he practically gets up to dance when we read the book. He keeps asking me to buy it. I was very disappointed to find that it is out of print so soon. Overall, it is a great book for kids ages two to ten.

A gem of a book
Thank you Kessinger Publishing for this reprint of Ella Wheeler Wilcox's book, Heart of the New Thought, originally published in 1902! It is a real gem! As the publisher points out, the backbone of her philosophy is The Power of Right Thought, an ageless topic.

The concepts in her book are incredibly simple. But therein lies their complexity. In her first "thought" she writes: the young men of France are studying alchemy, hoping to learn the secret of the transmutation of gold. But if you will study your own spirit and its limitless powers, you will gain a greater secret than any alchemist ever held; a secret which shall give you whatever you desire.

Now that is some promise! And with serious, repetitive "thought work," it is possible. Ms. Wilcox explains why we need to control our thoughts and how we can achieve this. She describes various facets of the mind and how it is used to heal or to maim. But do not be tricked by the refreshing simplicity of her writings, nor put off by her sometimes stern manner. Each word is worth its weight in gold.

This book is like a chat with a good friend. Its words speak directly to the heart and urge us to be just a little more us. You will find that you turn to the book for inspiration, wisdom, companionship... Its words can be read over and over and each time yet another facet (of yourself) revealed.

Ms. Wilcox jars our thinking, and challengs us to become who we really are. At the same time she makes us laugh at ourselves and our gullibility. Forget about complaining, there are no obstacles, why worry...Remember, Man is what he thinks. And she repetively reminds us of this as well as of our own Divinity. Powerful stuff indeed!

Ernest Holmes drew on her teachings in his creation of the Science of Mind Philosophy. Perhaps that is from whence comes the famous Science of mInd motto, Change your thinking, change your life! Think about it! It is that simple!

Helpful Hints
This book/CD is amazing. Not only does it include Ella's version of each song, it also has the backtrack, AND the sheet music! After each song in the book, there are a few pages that give you some tips on how to sing the songs JUST like she did! It's SUCH a good buy. It really helped me get ready for my competion this summer. Before I got this book, I didnt know what I was going to compete with, but then I bought it, read a few of the tips, mixed in a bit of my own style, and I got 3rd place out of 30!! Weither you want it for preformance ideas, or just to listen to around the house, it definately has my vote :)
