You can count on it!
This is a very special book. Our 15 month old has enjoyed it practically since birth. He sees something new in this book every time we read it together. The photography is stunning - like you are there in person. The prose are beautifully simple, but grab all ages by making you think on the last page. Not only does this book help teach counting, but appreciation of the natural beauty around us and the importance of preserving it.

We now give as a gift to every newborn we know, and hope you will enjoy as much as we do.

Counting on the Woods
This is a unique counting book (numbers 1-10) written by Kentucky author George Ella Lyon with beautiful close-up photographs taken in a forest in Kentucky by Ann W. Olson. At first glance this may appear to be just an interesting counting book. Upon further investigation it becomes clear that this book is that and much more. It is also a wonderful book to use with students of all ages when studying science. Children are naturally curious and the crisp colorful photos of bugs, nests, and wildflowers will surely spark many scientific questions. The photos complement the brief poetic text. I think that the text describing the number 10 ("Ten trees whose innumerable leaves / clean the air/ for everything / that breathes") will heighten even the youngest readers' interest in trees and their role in preserving our environment. This book will be enjoyed by readers of all ages.

Excellent Counting on the Woods
This book offers a marvelous and unique way to teach young children how to count. The photographs of Cave Run Lake and the Clark State Fish Hatchery offer children opportunities to feel as though they are actually there where the poem takes place. It is a great book to use in introducing forest animals and habitats of various forest animals. I was very impressed with this book. The rhyming nature of the text and the breathtaking photographs make it very easy for young readers to get "lost" in the woods while learning to count to 10. Excellent resource for teachers! (Especially KY teachers)

Makes it easy to get started and is also a great reference!
This book is set up into lessons, one for each letter of the alphabet. It goes over the natural remedies for many illnesses and health issues, including item, recommended dosage and how to prepare it. When you're done with the lessons, you can use it as a huge alphabetical reference guide. This book packs a lot of information in an easy-to-use format.

Great introduction and reference guide
This guide works for both those new to studying herbs and those who would like a solid reference book. It is laid out in alphabetical lessons that can later serve as a quick reference index. The author actually goes beyond the herbs themselves to discuss illnesses and ailments that can be treated with natural remedies. The book makes it easy to get started studying a sometimes overwhelming topic!

Whether you know a little or a lot...
If you don't know a lot about herbal remedies, buy this book! That's what I did, and I learned more than I expected about finding, preparing and using herbs for healing. I thought I would just get an overview, but the book is easy to understand, and the review questions are terrific for making sure you retain what you've read! I was so impressed that I lent the book to a friend who knows a lot about natural healing. She ended up buying a copy for herself! I'm not kidding. It's really that good.

Jim's Courthouse
I enjoyed this novel from the beginning to the end. You are invited to witness a twisted love affair between three people. You'll learn that a man who loves two women is a man in trouble. Be sure to check out this novel and find out how Jim's life unfolds. Can true love survive? Jo Ella has a gift that I hope she continues to use. She can weave a tale that traps your imagination and makes you feel for her characters. I'm looking foward to more of her tales.

Fascinating novel
A marvelous and fascinating story that keeps the reader absorbed on every page. It reveals the humanity and struggles of Southern life during the Civil War era. Ms White involves the reader emotionally in this compelling story of love and the hardships of war. White is a wonderful storyteller that touches the heart. Her discriptions are so vivid that I felt I was living with her characters. A wonderful addition to one's library.

Jim's Courthouse
Jim's Courthouse written by JoElla White is a compelling story set in the Civil War days in upper South Carolina. Ms. White's depiction of the rural country side, events and characters makes for one of the best books I have read. This book is well written and although described as a "romantic" novel, it still lets the reader draw conclusions and encourages the readers imagination! Ms. White has done an outstanding job of joining fact and fiction. Jim's Courthouse is one book that you will not want to put down until the final page. I highly recommend you read this one, you will not be disappointed.

The Knight, Death and the Devil
Published in Hardcover by William Morrow (1990)
Author: Ella Leffland
Amazon base price: $22.95
Average review score:

A justified historical novel
If you are interested in German/European history, then get yourself a copy of this book. It seems to be out of print, and no I won't sell mine, but its still worth finding. Leffland took the approach of a historical novel because she felt that this was the best way of making you understand the times and how heroic Germans could be seduced by Nazism and Hitler. Leffland certainly researched her subject well enough to have written a biography of Georing, but this approach had to be more fun for her and her readers. Sure, its kind of a cop out approach when comparing this to Kershaw's biography of Hitler, but then Kershaw does not make me feel like a German caught up in the rush of the early 20's in Germany either.

Meet Hermann Goering
Leffland brings the complexities of Hermann Goering to life with clarity and vivid detail. Her descriptions of Castle Veldenstein and Carinhall (Goering's estate named after his first wife) are fascinating, and are quite accurate, probably the best ever written. Although this novel is fiction, the bulk of the material is taken from exhaustively researched facts. (Leffland actually went to Germany to visit places in the book firsthand and met with Goering's relatives.) The Knight, Death and the Devil is a wonderfully tragic tale that can be savored like a fine wine.

A Fine Novel
Leffland is an exquisite writer. This novel explores the humanity of a monster, the banality of evil personified. It is a very rich and enlightening journey that illuminates a life yet can not answer the mystery behind its horrifying outcome. The writing is superb, the character of H.G. richly ambiguous. As with any villain, there are more questions than answers, and Leffland beautifully dramatizes the puzzle of the nature of evil and how it can take root in the human soul.

Murder in The Afternoon
I live in Potosi, about 15-20 miles from Quaker, where this took place. This book is the 100 % truth of what happened. My aunt is a family member of one of the victims and has told me about it. The book is available at the Washington County Library in paperback all of the time. I think many readers do not realize how small these towns are, Quaker is just a bunch of farms where everybody knows everybody and just about everyone is related. It was a shock that something like that would ever happen because even today, it just doesn't happen here.

Inspiring Story of Triumph Over Tragedy
Ella Jo Sadler has written a touching story of her experience with the brutal attack on her family which resulted in the deaths of her father and her best friend. She herself was beaten beyond recognition and left on the brink of death, and her mother was shot but not killed. The book kept me riveted to my seat until I finished it! The family showed such faith in God through the entire ordeal that it was an encouragement to my faith, as well!

someone who knows
This book tells it like it is. This is a true story, and it happend in a small town in Missouri. the older guy that committed the murders just recently died in prison. And the younger guy is out on parol {which should have never happend}. The lady who wrote the book "Murder in the Afternoon" is still suffering, She is 95yrs old and still lives on the property where this took place. She witnessed it all first hand, and was in a coma three weeks prior to the murders.

Well Done, and RIGHT ON TIME!
Bravo...Being a Black woman with a Civil Engineering Degree from an Ivy League University, currently working in Construction Management, this book tells the story of "how it is". To me it is fusion of African American Studies, and Woman's Studies with a focus on the African American woman using the White woman as a control subject. I've seen the examples given in the book played out before me in my own career.

To the authors: well done thank you for looking into a subject that society choses to ignore.

Powerful, Insightful and Startling Insights
Once you start reading about these women's childhoods, it is hard to put down the book. You will find your own story amongst the women in this book. While it is sometimes heartwrenching, it is nevertheless hopeful. Every woman who has or is about to work in corporate America ought to read this book. I would also say buy one for your manager. The books says the things perhaps a lot of women executives have not been able to share. Professors Bell and Nkomo are to be commended for their scholarship and clear writing.

Blends in-depth case histories with profiles of insights
Our Separate Ways examines differences between black and white women's trials and triumphs as they rose in the business world; but it's much more than an account of experiences. Eight years of research contributed to and formed the foundation for this coverage, which blends in-depth case histories with profiles of insights gained on race, gender, and economics. Our Separate Ways is an invaluable title.

The truth about Black Biblical Hebrew-Israelites(Jews: The w
There is a saying that goes " the truth shall set you free " Christ an Israelite said those words and now the truth will set minds on fire with this book. Other books have peeked around the subject that the Jews the bible speaks of along with all the biblical prophets INCLUDING CHRIST are all people of dark color. This book takes this topic head on. This is a secret that has been diliberately white washed and hidden since the start of the Rennaisance period. This book just emphazises the truth and nothing but the truth. Again THE REAL JEWS ARE THE SO-CALLED BLACK MAN IN AMERICA AND THE CARRIBBEAN, THE HISPANICS THROUGHOUT NORTH CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA AND, THI SO-CALLED AMERICAN INDIANS. These are the true people of the lord who built the pyramids in Egypt and molded civilization since the beginning of time. This book my friends will tell you and show you all of these true and shocking facts.

House of Israel
I only read the review, but i'am a hebrew Israelite. You see i had a 'Y' chromosome test proformed in Houston, Texas, last year. From the testing center in Houston and others like it an article was written by USNEWS & World Report. But the article didn't touch Ella's subject. Which is the reason my caption is there with nothing written in the article itself. I'm about to have another 'Y' chromosome test sent to Oxford, England in the hopes of linking with my ancient heritage. Pertaining to Ancient Israelites in Ella's reveiw it is not only true but the 21st century will prove to be monumental for now called African Americans/Europeans whom like myself are starting to receive proof of their origin.

Much Truth is found in this book
Ella Hughley has written a book about a controversial subject, that is only whispered about from time to time by Scholars, Archaeologist and Theologians. She shows that the original Hebrews who were freed from Egyptian bondage, were a black skinned people. But it doesn't stop there, she provides more information that shows the African Americans are descendants of those original Hebrews.

This book brings out the fact that the bible says Ancient Israel looked like the Ethiopian and Ancient Egyptians. Ella Hughley shows this by the biblical comparison of Moses and Joseph to the Ancient Egyptians. She shows how the punishments / curses that were put on Israel by the most high fit the full description of the African Americans history and social ills in the western hemisphere.

Ella Hughley goes deeper, she provides information about the Ashkenazi Jews, and who they are really descendants from......

All in all this is a good book to begin you on the path to the truth about the original Biblical Israelites. It's a small book (68 pages) but it contains big information.

This book honors the mind and spirit of both child and adult
This gorgeous book is unlike any other children's book I have ever seen. It is richer, more varied in its offerings and in its fundmental concept, which is a celebration of books. I can imagine enjoying this book with children of any age from newborn all the way through early teens. It expresses a tender love of both language and image that I find deeply evocative. Imagine a book that offers a myriad of possibilities on every page, in a beautiful, nonlinear way, as different from Richard Scarry as possible. This is a wondrous book about books.

Teaching Reading
This book is fantastic for teaching the power and purpose for reading. Students of all ages can see how virtual reality is not only on a computer monitor but also between the pages of a book! The words are few, but the paintings are outstanding provoking imagination and conversation about the power of thought and the written word. It is a powerful teaching tool for teaching students of all ages, k-post college.

Superior
The best lesson in humility a child (or adult) can have. The rhyming text makes the reading fun. This is my favorite of all the Bill Peet books.

Excellent!
I can't believe no one has reviewed this book yet. I was flipping through the Bill Peat collection just because Christmas is drawing near and these books made such a huge impact on my childhood I wanted to now share them with my son. Ella is the classic tale of the underdog making good in the end and I would HIGHLY recommend it (or ANY Bill Peat book) for anyone who enjoys sharing stories of substance with their children.
