Forgotten Hero
Everyone has heard of Martin Luther King, but few remember what Ella Baker did. Baker helped to develop the civil rights movement by working at the grass roots level with the NAACP and SCLC but, since she worked outside of the spotlight, she has received little credit for her accomplishments. Known to most activists of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, Baker is well-deserving of a biography and this is particularly well-written one. More information about her private life could have been included though.

Ms. Ella Baker - the heart & soul of the movement
More than any other single figure, Ella Baker represents the heart and soul of the civil rights movement at its highest and best. Starting earlier than most any other central leader, Ms. Baker was instrumental in sparking more of the major events in civil rights history than any other. Yet always working as the behind the scenes organizer and pushing others forward, particularly grassroots and youthful leaders, Ms. Baker is probably the least known outside the movement. No more important task exists than preserving her memory and Joanne Grant has done an excellent job in this important book. Even insiders will be surprised at what they'll learn in this comprehensive account. A great followup to Joanne's earlier documentary: Fundi - The Life of Ella Baker. Ms. Baker is universally revered among movement people for her wisdom, courage and acute political analysis that taught and guided thousands. Truly she was as close to a real saint as this world produces and to! ! uched her times in the most redemptive and revolutionary way.

Eva Perón: la razón de mi vida y otros escritos (Evita por ella misma)

Intriguing, deep, honest
I've always been an admirer of Eva Duarte de Peron (Evita), I had been looking for this book for ages until one day I stumbled upon it in Spain, some 6 years ago, it was the last copy available and I had to have it.
La Razon de Mi vida or My Mission in Life as it was translated into english, was meant to be an autobiography of perhaps the strongest and most influential woman of the XX century, many strong women have come and go but none have left such lasting impression like Evita has, perhaps the other one would be her alter ego in a movie, Madonna.
The book doesn't tell us anything about her origins but it does tell us where she wants to go, it's a true insight of her vision, her leadership and the strong love and devotion she felt for her husband.
It is more of a political and love statement than anything else, it's the pure and raw Evita, this is her essence and what made her who she was and who she is.

One of the best books ever!
Not a lot of books give you a true insight of a person's life. There's no better way to really get to know a person if you don't see it from their own point of view. Nobody knows Evita better than her. This book is excellent it will make you read it over and over and never get tired of it. I recommended to you greatly!

Great Read
I loved this book! The characters reminded me of my own family, and I din't want the story to end. This story will make you laugh, cry, and inspire you, and you will love the way it ends. Finally, another author that knows how to keep a story going, and make you want to turn the page! I can't wait for her next one.

Finally! A new christian writer that really writes!
I loved this story. The characters reminded me of my own family, and I didn't want the story to end. It is refreshing to find someone that writes like life really is, and shows the good and the bad of it. It was a story that will make you laugh and cry, be inspired and love the way it ends!

Phenomenal.
This book is one of the best I have read. For a woman to write these words over 100 years ago and still have the same meaning today is amazing. It shows that some things never really change.

A moving, deeply touching book of poetry
Ella Wheeler Wilcox is a master poetress in this moving, deeply touching book of poetry. With each line the reader will identify with the emotions and move to higher levels of awareness.

Wonderful stories of two best friends!
I'm a mother of two boys ages 3 and 6...they both loved this book! It's playful, fun and shares valuable lessons about friendship. These are two silly, wonderful birds! For weeks it was all my 3 year old wanted to read. They both walked around the house quoting the book. "Looking good...feeling good!" is their favorite. It's hard for me to find one book that entertains them both and this one fits the bill. This is sure to be on my Christmas list for nieces and nephews this year. Hope we see more of these wonderful characters.

unconditional love
This book is like getting three books for the price of one! I bought it because the birds on the cover were so adorable, but I got much more than I bargained for. With the simplest stroke of a brush, Jef Kaminsky can communicate glee or anger, embarassment or pride--but that's not all. The text is hilarious. I just about fell off my chair when Ella called Poppy a "goober" and it nearly killed me when Poppy combed his hair, looked in the mirror and said, "Lookin' good, feelin' good." That's what I do in the morning if I'm feeling really fine. Even the titles of the individual stories are clever: "Ruffled Feathers", "To Beach His Own," and "Darkness Falls." Just like a funny old married couple, Poppy and Ella find ways to resolve their differences that are at once poignant and funny. I loved this book, and if you love George and Martha, you're sure to get a kick out of these old birds. A hundred thumbs up!

Excellent
They don't come much better than the Ella Clah series. The authors keep this book on a personal level so that you feel you know and understand the character. You feel her pain and her joy. One isn't enough. Buy them all.

A long running mystery where the heroine becomes the villain
Navaho Police Special Investigator Ella Clah and her cousin, police officer Justine Goodluck loudly argue in public over a recent incident. When a few days later, Justine's burnt bones are found partially buried on the top of RED MESA, everyone, including some members of her own family, conclude that Ella killed Justine. Even Ella's beloved mother believes her daughter has turned evil and wants to protect her infant grandchild from her.

While Ella flees to buy time and the truth behind Justine's murder, the law chases after her even more convinced she is an escaping killer. As the law gets closer to capturing her, Ella begins to unravel a plot to eliminate her. Will she be able to expose the dastardly scheme before her time runs out?

The fifth Clah entry is a great tale because the talented duo, Aimee & David Thurlo never lose sight of the scheme or the personalities of the cast. Even on the lam, Ella remains Ella, as fans know her. The plot works because the "plot" against Ella still retains plausibility even with the villains known early in the tale. The Thurlos talent resides in deep and thorough characterizations that lift their Native American police procedurals to a plane shared by the likes of Hillerman.

An Oldie but a Goodie!
First of all this book is not a new book but was first printed about fifty years ago. I stumbled onto my copy at a booksale a dozen years ago and have used it many times since. It is a wonderful resource for traditional New England Yankee cookery and is a great resource fo people who care about or study food history. It is full of wonderfully simple and delicious tradional recipes and captures the rich culinary history of the recent and not so recent past (the Pilgrims could have written some of these recipes!)

The foundations of New England culinary heritage
Two New Hampshire cooks share their recipes and the foundations of New England culinary heritage with a guide gathered from early American and Native American roots. Secrets of New England Cooking packs in dishes such as Indian pudding, oyster pie, succotash and coconut custard pie. No photos, but these are simple dishes requiring little visual assistance.

Extraordinary book - PLEASE SOMEBODY BRING IT BACK
This is the most outstanding career retrospective ever published on a movie star, a flagrant labor of love done with intregity and intelligence. The end result is an example of quality ever film star biographer ought to follow. Each of Stanwyck's 80+ films are profiled in depth with exclusive commentary from scores of her coworkers - leading men, directors, screenwriters, etc. This landmark book was extremely important in reestablishing Stanwyck's reputation as one of the truly great women of the cinema. I fell in love with this book twenty years ago as a teenager in a local library - I had grown up watching reruns of Barbara in THE BIG VALLEY and had no idea of her incredible film career. I was thrilled when the author published a revised edition in the late 80's enabling me to actually own a copy of this gem and now with Miss Stanwyck's death (10 years ago - how time flies! It seems like yesterday) it is truly time for a second revised edition. If you own one book on one movie star LET THIS BE IT.

THE BEST CAREER BOOK EVER WRITTEN
Ella Smith's coffee-table book on the career of Barbara Stanwyck is, bar none, the finest of its kind that this writer has ever read. Instead of being content to merely list Stanwyck's films and reprint old reviews (in the tradition of most "Films of" books), Ella Smith has gone the extra mile, and then some. This is because the idea originated with Smith (as opposed to a writer being "assigned" the project by a publisher), and it's entirely her baby. Smith designed the layout, selected the photographs and determined which of them would get the full page treatment (and her choices are absolutely breathtaking!)

In addition to including original reviews of Stanwyck's stage, film, and television work (as well as highlights from Stanwyck's interviews from that period) Smith personally viewed all of Stanwyck's work, and her observations are marvelously perceptive (drawing as they do on her own experience as actress, director and teacher). I was particularly pleased that she notes the powerful impact of Stanwyck's SILENT moments (whereas too many critics remember only the explosive ones). But most of all, I value the interviews Smith conducted with Stanwyck's co-stars and directors. These anecdotes are, in turn, touching and funny --- and reveal aspects of Stanwyck's personality that add greatly to the readers' regard for the woman, as well as the actress.

Of all the books written about Barbara Stanwyck, THIS is the only one worthy of her.

Celebrate...How wonderful life is .....
Chances are if you have a preschooler, they have a best friend and can spend hours talking about the fun they have together. First friendships for children are delightful, intense experiences and George Ella Lyon has written a charming poem in celebration of these first friendships.

Lyon with the help of illustrator Vera Rosenberry escorts us through some wonderful experiences that two good friends have.

"You salt the ice and I'll crank the cream.
Let's put our hands together and dream the same dream."

We read as the girls crank a huge ice cream maker and share a giant sundae.

Every page provides an imaginative scene between the two young girls, one white and one black, who share fun and friendship together. We see images of them building sand castles on the beach, building a house, fighting a dragon and swimming with the dolphins. Anyone who has watched young children playing knows their imaginations are working overtime and these two girls are perfect examples of this imagination. Children will have fun looking at the illustrations and explaining what the girls are pretending.

With the poetic verse and lovely imaginative illustrations you will love reading this book to your child. It promotes such a positive message about the importance of friendships. It is important that adults provide children with positive ideals and messages to aspire to and this book gives a parent a beautiful way of doing just that.

A very sweet book about friendship!
This book is a beautiful poem with lovely illustrations. The pictures are of two girls, one white and one African American, celebrating their friendship. While the book is clearly designed for little people, 3-grade school, I plan to get several copies as gifts for my adult friends. If you have a special friendship to celebrate, this is the book with which to do it!

A Provocative, Seminal Work
I started reading Unthinking Eurocentrism one night and couldn't sleep until I had finished it. Shohat and Stam's briliantly written, often witty, book is an intellectual page turner. I plan to read it again.

A Majestic, empowering work
As a social science student, I found this book invaluable in its incisive exposure of Eurocentrism. The authors treat the subject in a mature manner, and offer an alternative, that of decentering the discussion and making it multi-centric rather than Euro-centric. This book is sensitively written and does not offend Europeans, but seeks to reveal the hidden ways in which Eurocentrism manifests itself. I experienced the reading of this book as liberating and as a validation of my own thinking. I read a university library copy, but I intend to purchase a copy for my children to read - and to refer back to time and time again. It is a timeless work.
