Scientifically sound, totally accessible, and fascinating.
Robin Keuneke's comprehensive and scientifically based book, TOTAL BREAST HEALTH, is well organized and full of nutritional information for today's health-conscious women. The recipes included are flavorful and, based on scientific data, may very well help to prevent breast cancer. Robin has taken a difficult scientific topic, made it easy to understand and fascinating to read. I highly recommend this book for both women and men who want to take cahrge of their health.

Well-balanced, highly informative, and practical!
Robin Keuneke has saved me a lot of valuable time by writing an excellent book, "Total Breast Health." As a physician who practices alternative medicine, I spend a great deal of time educating patients about the causes and prevention of diseases as well as giving them safe, natural approaches to alleviate their ailments. Now I can also refer them to this well-balanced, highly-informative and practical book. It's important to know that this book is not for women only. I believe that the underlying concepts and principles in "Total Breast Health" can be applied to other medical problems as well, such as prostate cancer and heart disease, to name a few. I believe that anybody who is interested in getting the cutting edge information on how to stay healthy should read this book. -- Alan R. Cohen, M.D., P.C. (Milford, CT)

"Total Breast Health" promotes total vitality.
Robin Keuneke's "Total Breast Health" is a model for all nutrition books. Combine its easy-to-read, well-referenced, and organized format with one of the nation's most important preventable diseases, breast cancer, and you have a deserved best seller. Keuneke's exploration into fascinating and controversial areas while bringing a clear light without judgmental tone is a hallmark of this book. Of particular interest to many will be the depth that Keuneke has written about dietary fat and its relationship with disease. While this is a complex subject, it is elucidated better through an interview format than any I have read before. As interesting as Keuneke's section is on dietary fat, she is able to cover many breast health subjects with as much acumen. Of great interest are the chapters, 'The Hidden Power of Plant Foods' and 'Herbs, Spices, and Mushrooms.' Simply said, if you want to promote not just breast health but total vitality, read Keuneke's book and follow her simple and delicious recipes. -- Paul Schulick, author of "Ginger: Common Spice and Wonder Drug"

African Sunshine and Shadows by Susan Jahme
Jahme definitely has a gift for poetry. I personally liked the poems that told a story best. She has keen insight into the details and struggles of life in Africa. One special touch in the book that I haven't often seen elsewhere are short definitions and explanations following certain poems. Some of the place names, events and people were unfamiliar to me and these short definitions really brought me closer to what she was talking about. As for the poems with the explanations, I felt as though I understood where her inspiration came from, which in turn inspired me. For example, one poem that is good in itself becomes great when you realize that it was inspired by looking at a child in Cape Town who was homeless due to his parents dying from AIDS.

Haunting and thought-provoking - a good read.
She uses musical, picturesque words to paint Africa in your mind. The animals are real, the people will make you want to cry. The scenes are accurate and, in many poems, express the despair of the African people/culture. These poems will stick in your mind. And Africa's clown with the "flexible aerial" will make you laugh! I don't generally enjoy reading poetry, but I did enjoy this book. Try it!

African Sunshine and Shadows
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I think Susan gives very vivid descriptions of the African people and sites in her poems. I especially loved the one about the warthog that she calls "Africa's Clown". My favorite line there is where she compares him to a little gray jeep.
I understand she has another book about growing up in Africa and I hope I'm lucky enough to read it when it is published

A must for new parents
Baby Be Loved is a must for new parents. It has all the information one needs to get off to a great start. Not only does it provide valuable developmental information, it also incorporates age appropriate activities for your baby such as visual stimulation, games, rhymes and songs. I love that each lyric is accompanied by music notations, which is very helpful.

Baby Be Loved is full of inspiration and essential knowledge, and is published in a hanging format which makes it very accessible. You don't need to find time to sit down and read, just hang it on the wall and browse over the page when you pass by. You learn something new every time,

I highly recommend this book -- it is sure to make the experience of parenthood a little easier.

Your baby will love it!
Thank you Ms. Stelfox for creating this book! I hung "Baby Be Loved" next to the changing table when my baby girl was just a week or two old. When she was fussy she'd look up at it and she would quiet right down, it was amazing! She was fascinated with the black and white (and later color) illustrations that really drew her attention. I take "Baby Be Loved" along on car trips too. I never leave home without it! I would strongly recommend this book to all new parents. It makes a terrific shower gift too. What a wonderful way to share in your child's early development!

All New Parents Should Have This Book!
This is a great, easy to read guide for new parents. It gives great suggestions and information on building a close relationship with a newborn. The book includes information and activities appropriate for each week of a baby's life, up to age 24 weeks. It also has great bold illustrations for each week that are fascinating to babies - very handy for baby's visual stimulation. The book is very pro-baby, pro-hands on bonding, pro-parent/baby interaction. This would be a great gift for any expectant or new mom/dad to give her/him tangible suggestions on what to do with baby to make the most of their relationship and to optimize baby's development. This book is simply wonderful!

Digestive Wellness
Published in Paperback by Keats Pub (1996)
Authors: Elizabeth Lipski, Susan Davis, and Jeffrey S. Bland
Amazon base price: $14.95
Used price: $3.00

Must read
This book reads like a gripping novel. Logical explaination is followed by statistical proof, showing the hazards of our modern diet. Chapter 3's Voyage through the Digestive System is interesting, undertandable and a compulsive read. Problem identification and theraupic solutions are simple, and again very logical. I would recommend this book for anybody working in the health profession especially natural therapists. It is also very understandable for the layperson with little prior knowledge of how the digestive system works.

Digestion is the Question
For health professionals and lay people alike, this book presents a clear and useful description of the digestive process and its fundamental importance in health. Many of us do not want to know about this vital system, or else we take it for granted. Lipski does a superb job of helping the reader learn, heal and prevent further problems regarding digestion. If you've ever had the common sense notion that poor digestion needs to be fixed before a healthy diet or supplements will do much good, this book is for you. If you've never had such a thought and you get totally bloated after meals, you might want to check it out as well. A thoughtful and easy read!

Digestive Wellness, Updated Second Edition
Not only is the list of difficulties caused by poor digestion lengthy, it includes many health problems that people don't immediately associate with their digestive process. Most people know that bad breath, indigestion, hiatal hernias, and Crohn's Disease are related to what happens in the digestive tract. Clinical nutritionist Elizabeth Lipski, M.S., C.C.N., also includes arthritis, autism, fibromyalgia, psoriasis, and schizophrenia in the list of digestion-related ailments.

Lipski cites all the latest research and studies on digestive disorders and therapies in her new book, Digestive Wellness, Updated Second Edition.

Digestion begins in the mouth and continues through the stomach and intestines to the colon. Each organ has an important role to play in helping the body break down foods so that their nutrients can be absorbed. Lipski says that "most of us don't think much about digestion unless it isn't working well," adding that "many people with chronic digestive problems continue to eat poorly, never realizing that their food choices are causing their ill health."

She starts with an exploration of the causes of digestive illness, which is often related to lifestyle choices. She then describes how a healthy digestive system works, and explains where and how the process can get out of balance. Lipski also includes information on how to pinpoint the source of your particular digestive disorder and provides recommendations and therapies for restoring wellness.

She emphasizes that each person has different biochemistry, and that what works for one will not work for another. Although health professionals can order lab tests (and she explains these tests fully), healing usually involves modifying individual eating habits. Accordingly, Lipski devotes one section to self-care strategies, with the intent of exposing readers to "more plans, new ideas, and the tools to be your own health expert."

She ends with a resource list of nutrition experts, health professionals, laboratories, and suggested reading.

Lipski says that Digestive Wellness "is about taking control of your lifestyle to increase your chances of getting healthier and more vibrant each year." It's an excellent resource for everyone suffering from any kind of digestive disorder and those who care about them.

Kitchens Cooks
I have purchased every book written by Susan Kitchens. I need the information, I need the insights and I appreciate the amount of work she puts into every title. If you use Bryce - any version - you need her books.

The book you need to really understand Bryce
If you've ever wanted to really understand Bryce and how it works, this is the book for you. It really helped me streamline the process of making cool worlds in Bryce. The color examples & awesome artwork are a nice bonus. Every feature in covered in great detail, far beyond the scope of the original Bryce manual. The author presents advanced features, showing how to make undersea worlds, rivers, & waterfalls using Bryce & Photoshop. She then devotes over 100 pages to working with texture. Other chapters cover working with other software, rendering and realistic nature imagery. There is even a chapter on making alien world scenes. The CD also has some great examples including rendering tests & tutorial Bryce files to play with. There are also 100's of spectacular images of different worlds created by over 80 different artists.

Welcomed...but we want more.
This was a book that definitely should have been written, and thankfully Dave Thomas did us the favor. Second City was a breeding ground for most of the innovative comedians from the mid 70s on. Its contributions to comedy exceed John Mayall's to music. This book deals with those roots and continues to follow the SCTV show, which is the more ideal sketch comedy offsprings. Saturday Night Live, being on NBC, had its control shifted away from the performers to Lorne Michaels and the programming office, whereas SCTV simply translated their stage improvisation to low budget TV with little such interference. It makes for a fascinating study. Where this book falls short is somewhat obvious after a brief looksee. Dave Thomas is an unashamed packrat. He had, over those years, collected everything from the shows. The exhastive tabulation of every sketch in every episode in the appendix is evidence of that. However, that would also be welcomed by SCTV fans in a book outlining the development of each of the sketch characters and perhaps a sketch-by-sketch description with his recollections. Perhaps that should be his next book. (C'mon Dave, what else are you gonna do with all that crap?) Anyway, it's a good two sittings of reading entertainment.

A look way behind the scenes
SCTV is perhaps the best comedy television ever produced or written. If you are at all a fan of the show, you will love this book. Who can forget Johnny Larue, 5 Neat Guys, The Days of the Week, The Great White North, the Sammy Maudlin Show, Bobby and Skip Bittman, and the VJ (before there were VJ's) Gerry Todd. The satire is dead on. The show just nails TV; the horrible vision that was the variety hour shows of the 70's, the newsroom, the "sweeps week", and especially the commercials.

The book itself is a running commentary on the show, it's stars, the writers, and the various ways the show aired. The photos are perhaps the best feature (who can forget Carl's Cuts with the pig-men) or the fact that Rick Moranis does Woody Allen better than Woody. Dave and Rick really do Bob Hope and Woody Allen so well it is scary. The book runs in mostly chronological order, with input from the starts all along the way. However, some of the commentary is WAY behind the scenes, perhaps a bit too far back for the average fan.

Dave Thomas, the author, does an excellent job of capturing the egos, the infighting, and the creative styles of the shows writers and performers. People often forget just how much talent came out of this ensemble: John Candy, Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Dave Thomas, Rick Moranis, Catherine O'Hara; all have had major roles in TV and movie comedy since their stint on SCTV.

The best features of this book: The photos and the quizzes at the end of each chapter. The worst feature: too much information on the writers and producers behind the scenes and not enough info on what went in front of the cameras.

Overall, I recommend highly as a great look at the best comedy shows ever made.

Funny Show, Funny Book
SCTV is one of the funniest shows of all time. The show was a sketch comedy show based around a fictional television station. Dave Thomas was one of the stars and writers on the show and most famously known as one half of the McKenzie Brothers which was created on the show. The book takes you from the early pre-TV days of the comedy troupe through to it's end. You get the insider's perspective from Mr. Thomas and it is a very intriguing read. The book is also chock full of great pictures. If you are a big fan of the show, this book is a must read.

Lots to think about here...
I am a man, and this review is for other men. I'm going to figure that you are looking for a book on relationships because you are having problems with your own relationship. As a man, you are probably goal oriented and practical - you have a problem, you are looking for solutions, and maybe a book will help. There are lots of books out there - which to pick? Susan Page's book is valuable, and I do recommend it. There is quite a lot of useful information here, and lots to think about. Expect to spend some time with this book. She takes a highly behavioral approach - you are asked to first believe that your relationship will work, and to act loving toward your partner. If you change your beliefs and behaviors, she maintains, then you will see your relationship flourish and the feelings between you and your partner will grow. If your orientation is different - for example, if you believe that it's more important to search for and heal the underlying childhood wounds that cause you to think, feel, and behave in the ways you do - then you may not be happy with this book. My advice to you, however, is that you NOT read this book first. I'm not convinced that there is one book out there that will give you everything you need to know to "fix" things, or at least I haven't found it. I have a thick skull, and it has taken reading several things for these ideas to start to penetrate. I think you will have an easier time understanding and accepting what Susan Page is saying if you read a few other things first. Here are some other books you might wish to search for also: (1) "Communication Miracles for Couples," by Jonathan Robinson - this book is very short and accessible, and you will find some of the same ideas. After you start to understand some of this stuff, I think you will have an easier time working through Susan Page's book, which is much more detailed. (2)If you are heterosexual, I think you may find it helpful to read something about the differences between men and women. You don't have to buy into all of it, but the girls probably do think differently than us, and it will get you thinking. So consider John Gray's "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus." Along a similar vein, and an absolute bargain at only about $5, is the book "Light Her Fire" by Ellen Kreidman, which is extremely practical. Happy reading, and good luck!

best book I've ever read on relationships
Like everyone else says, this is a tremendous book, and it is by far the best and wisest book I've ever read on relationships, and I've read more than a few. It is much better than couples therapy and provides immediate results and feedback.

The book empowers readers to improve their relationships without having to persuade their spouse to be involved at all - the spouse's behavior changes without effort when you apply the principles in this book.

The book is especially useful for people who feel like the problems in their relationship are all their partner's fault, or who spend a lot of energy being angry about their partner's behavior and failure to meet their needs, or who feel like their partner has all the power. Reading this book causes a complete mind shift, and even if you don't put everything into practice (which takes some self-control and a willingness to change your own behavior), your attitude will be greatly improved and your outlook more positive on your relationship.

When I read this book, I found myself astonished at its obvious good sense and the fact that no one else has written anything like it.

Buy it and read it!

One of the best books on relationships
This book is one of the best on relationships I have ever read. Its title suggests that it is for married couples, but the information in invaluable for any relationship. She shows you how to make any relationship just the way you want it! It is not necessarily a book for fixing bad relationships (although it will help). It can make your ordinary relationships extraordinary ones. You can read the book like a novel and it will affect your life. Stop to do the exercises and it could transform your life.

I loved this book, an excellent read.
I just read Seaward for Children Literature, and was throughly impressed by it. I love the sense of mystery that surrounded the book so that I was never quite sure what was going on. West and Calli's journey had mystical quality to it, so that I was never sure what the purpose of their journey was, or what would happen once they reached the sea. Susan Cooper's style reminded me a little of C.S.Lewis's work. She created a fully developed world all to itself, and steeped it in Celtic mythology and symbolism. It is a story about life and the hardships that one faces as one takes the journey of life. This book has become one of my all time favorites, and am truely glad that I read it.

Lovely
This book is one of the most beautiful love stories ever crafted. I think Susan Cooper is a genius of description and this story about two young people dealing with loss shows her skill admirably. West and Cally experience deep, true love being born in them out of trust and shared experience. This book has all the fantasy and detailed dreamlike settings you come to expect from Susan Cooper, and the only problem with this book is that the peripheral characters, even the main antagonists, are pale in comparison with Cally and West. S.C. has created such strong, rich, personalities for the two of them that the others can't match up. This fact, however, does not really detract from the book, because this really is a story of what happens inside West's and Cally's minds and hearts after their great losses. The other characters are there to personify traits and abstracts; good, evil, loyalty, etc. If you are looking for a smart, deep fantasy story with a dash of powerful romance thrown in (the description of West watching Cally wash her hair is one of the most heartstopping bits I've ever read), read Seaward. You won't be disappointed.

This is my favourite
I am twenty-three years old, and I have loved this book since I was in my very early teens.

Susan Cooper is a classic children's author, and her Dark is Rising sequence regularly gets praised as her best, or at least most popular work.

This book, although very different from her previous and following works, blows even the best of that whole series away.

It is the journey of West and Cally, two teens both suffering from grief, through a strange country, where life and death are living beings. All they know is that they must travel to the sea; neither is entirely certain why. This journey allows both teens to come to terms with their own pain, and their different losses.

The landscape is strange and dreamlike; it is known from her comments in essays that Susan Cooper literally uses dreams to inspire scenes in her stories, and this story more than any other seems to me filled with that drifting feeling. The two main characters are well dsrawn, and some of the supporting cast are very memorable. It also makes excellent use of the selkies, a piece of old folklore of which I am particularly fond.

Best of all, Susan Cooper does NOT do here the thing which made Silver on the Tree such a huge disappointment to me; she does not cheat at the end.

(Warning for those who haven't read the book; spoiler ahead)

Where in Silver on the Tree, the characters risk life and limb in the ultimate battle, only to be made to forget all that they have accomplished through the whole Dark is Rising series (thus making the series itself pointless), in Seaward, the characters are made to forget - for a while only , with a promise that they will remember again when they need to. This ending satisfies, where the similar clossing to Silver on the Tree only disappoints.

(spoiler done)

There are some stories which stay in one's mind for one's lifetime. I knew the moment I was done this story that this would be one of those books. It was my favourite when I was younger, and now that I have met more grief of my own, it has become a much deeper part of me. I only wish it were a little better known behind her more popular works.

ABSOLUTELY ENCHANTING!!!
FLAMES OF GRACE is the most captivating and enlightening spiritual adventure story I have ever read. I could not put this book down. It flows as gracefully as water over the falls. This true story recounts a thrilling odyssey that is filled with incredible insights about life and spirit. I recommend it very highly to every person who has even the slightest inkling to explore the world of spirit and the meaning of life.

This is a must read!
I laughed. I cried. But most notably, I couldn't put this book down. Walker shared such a deeply personal journey with us that I can only pray that one day I have the strength to not only be so honest with the world, but to be so honest with myself. Susan Walker creates brilliant inner worlds and we all have something to learn from her journey into them. She is on a genuine journey of self discovery and this manifest destiny of her soul will be where we begin building the temples of our souls. Walker is a brave spirit for sharing this wonderful, beautiful, temultuous journey with us. God bless you Susan Walker for blessing us. And thanks for the book too. Brother God ;-)

This book is for anyone longing to believe in miracles.
If you need any reassurance that miracles exist, this is the book for you! It is the account of a young woman's passionate search for truth in which she gives away everything that she owns to follow the voice of the Divine down a path laden with faith and trials, fear and love. I read the entire book in one sitting and was graced with profound realizations, a captivating story, and a renewed belief in the world of spirit.

This novel exposes our tendency to play the imposter...
This is the first in a series of a six novel series. Having already read them all, I'm going back to start again. Howatch does a remarkable job of illustrating how insidious and how damaging to the human soul living behind a "glittering image" can be...the tendency to offer a mask for the rest of the world to see that simply doesn't match the true inner self. For me, this book got *really* interesting at the midway point! Great read!

In great Howatch tradition
Just as Howatch's family sagas were written in a multi-person first-person narrator format, so was the Starbridge series, but this time each narrator gets a whole book instead of only a section of one.
Glittering Images is the first book in the series. I had already read all five of the family sagas before I had the courage to start on Starbridge; I was afraid that a whole series of books set in the Church of England could not help but be stuffy and priggish. But this of course is Susan Howatch, a master storyteller. And these books are considered by many to be an enormous development fromthe sagas.
In fact, I found the depth of character found in all the Starbridge even more impressive than in the sagas. She shows not only an extraordinarily deep understanding of the human condition, she also shows great compassion and warmth for all her characters so that even if they have weaknesses and make mistakes, we can nevertheless forgive and love them.
IN the first trilogy of books, set in the 1930's and 1940's, each of the three narrators is stripped down and turned inside out, so that the reader knows all there is to know about them.
In this first book we first meet Charles Ashworth, who will be a major player in the series. Charles has conservative leanings and a Middle Way churchmanship. As ever, Howatch succeeds in giving us an in-depth portrait of a very likeable and sincere man, and sets him in the middle of a story that simply pulls you through, unravelling secret after secret. A wonderful book, which made me immediately want to start on the next one in the series - Glamorous Powers!

First of an excellent series of Church novels
1937: Charles Ashworth, young charming former Chaplain to Archbishop of Canterbury, Cosmo Lang, is asked to discreetly investigate the private life of the Bishop of Starbridge, Alex Jardine, an aggressive liberal. What he finds seems to horrifingly mirror what lurks in his own private life of hurt, tragedy, and guilt all hidden behind Ashworth's carefully crafted 'Glittering Image'. A brilliant novel about pastoral care and fundamental morality and Christ's grace and redemption.
