CAPS urges all dog lovers to buy this heartwarming book.
The Companion Animal Protection Society (CAPS) highly recommends Unforgettable Mutts: Pure of Heart Not of Breed. This touching tribute to mixed-breed dogs features a collection of more than one hundred photo-essays about remarkable mutts. Unforgettable Mutts is certain to make purebred lovers set aside their prejudices about those dogs who are less than "pure."

Around 75 percent of all dogs entering animal shelters in the U.S. are mixed-breed dogs. Sadly, one to two million of these mixed-breeds are euthanized each year. If you are thinking about adopting a shelter dog, CAPS strongly encourages you to give a home to a needy mutt. If you think you can't do without a purebred, read Unforgettable Mutts first. Karen Derrico's delightful book will convince you to change your mind.

An absolutely "Unforgettable" book! A must for dog lovers
Truly one of the best dog books I've seen in a long time! The photos are amazing, but combined with the inspiring, heartwarming, and incredible true stories, this book is definitely a winner. I wouldn't be surprised to see Unforgettable Mutts on the NY Times Bestsellers very soon! If you have even just a mild affinity for dogs, I guarantee you'll love this book!!

The Title Says It All
The title of this book truly says it all. These dogs are unforgettable. The best thing about this book is the memories it brought back to me of my childhood friend and mutt, Pokey. Since adulthood, I have always owned fullbred dogs, one rescued from a shelter, but still not the adorable mutt. After reading this book, I think of all of the love and devotion Pokey gave my family, and I am proud to say that she was a mutt. For those who own mutts, read the book and celebrate their uniqueness. For those who own pedigrees, read it anyway. It is full with stories of the love and joy only a dog can give. My only criticism is that it is too short. I could have read 100 more stories.

Not just for girls!
Young boys like this too. I think too often we steer boys away from books with girl protagonists, and that attitude stays with them. A 3 to 5 year old boy might delight in the rhymes just as much as a girl of that age. Seeing girls often develop language skills earlier, the use of books such as these with well-controlled, thoughtful use of language is useful for boys too! I loved Madeline (I'm over 40) and thought the illustrations aren't groovy - it's tough in the computer age! - they are quite whimsically delightful.

Kids I know like this book.

DawnENGL340 at SJC
Although "Madeline" probably needs no introduction, this classic story set in Paris is about a Miss Clavel and twelve little girls. The smallest girl is Madeline, who is brave and does not even get scared of a lion in the zoo. Madeline scares Miss Clavel when one night she... Ludwig Bemelmans does a great job of corresponding the illustrations to the content of the story. The scene where Madeline is saying "pooh-pooh" to the lion, it has more color than other pages making it exciting. The illustrations compliment the plot and setting of the story by giving each page a mood that helps create the story. The rythem and humor in this book will appeal to most children. I found when reading it to my daughter we both giggled at the many rhymes which Ludwig Bemelmans chose as the characteristic to tell this story in. I would reccomend this book for readers at the preschool age up to age eight or so. For the younger reader it has a great rythem and illustrations that keep the eye interested. For the older reader the story is equally interesting with a slight hint of suspence. Ludwig Bemelmans drawing's of the Opera, Notre Dame in the rain and of the children playing in the Luxembourg gardens give a classic picture of Paris. The illustrations coupled with the easy flow of the story and rhyme will allow this book to be enjoyed in a timeless fashion! DawnENGL340 at SJC

The classic start of the Madeline series
A short children's story about a young girl who lives with eleven other girls in a home in Paris and who has to go to the hospital to have her appendix removed. It was a 1940 Caldecott Honor book (i.e., a runner-up to the Medal winner) for best illustration in a book for children. This book, and others in the Madeline series, have become classics in children literature and every serious student of children literature should have it on their shelves. Children love these books.

A great writing resource!
An excellent tool for the craft! The text covers a variety of topics in fiction writing and includes story examples to demonstrate key concepts. The book is well organized, easily readable, and technically insightful. The chapters on structure and characterization were particularly helpful to me but each topic is thoroughly covered in concise language with meaningful examples. I feel like a better writer and a more alert reader. A must have for writers and literature aficionados.

Best book on the craft of writing ever written!
I teach writing in the UCLA Writer's Program (online) and always recommend this and "What If" by Ann Bernays and Pam Painter. Burroway's book is absolutely the best book on the craft of writing I've ever found. Anybody who aims to write well would do him- or herself a huge favor by buying this book. I've been drawn to it over and over when writing my own books, "The Death of Tarpons" (novel), "Monday's Meal" (Collection of short stories; and my forthcoming "Over Easy" from Random House and Ballantine Books (1999). I'm now involved in writing screenplays and the techniques Ms. Burroway covers in her book cover that form as well. I think giving it 5 stars is not enough and if it were possible to award ten stars, I would, enthusiastically. If you only buy one book on writing in your lifetime, make it this one!

The best
Any student wanting to learn or improve her fiction writing will feel blessed when she comes across this book. Yes, it's expensive, but buy it used; it's worth every penny.
Writing Fiction is a comprehensive, informal, practical guide (including an anthology) that approaches the elements of fiction writing from a writer's point of view. It touches on every aspect of the craft: plot, style, characters, dialogue, atmosphere, POV, and on and on and on.
Don't leave home without it!

Classical Ballet Technique

Great Book
As a Ballet Artistic Director and instructor I have found this is one of the best books of it's kind. I find that I use it every day. I have been teaching Ballet for 30 years and this is the most complete book I have found that is not just a dictionary. The pictures are easy for my students to follow when I can not show the step because of my maturing body.

Wonderful Reference
This book is wonderful for those dancers struggling to perfect their tecnique, or trying to learn many different styles. This book, however, is not for learning alone, it is a picture-filled book of ballet tecnique. I have found it to very helpful with the visualization of some complex steps and vocabulary explanations. It is the best book of its kind and a treasure of age-old tecnique finally written down in images for future generations to keep.

The Ultimate Ballet book
This wonderful book is a must have for any person who claims an interest in ballet. Whether you are a serious student , a beginner, or just a passionate observer, this book provides excellent instruction and beautiful photographs that walk you through every step of a movement. Provides helpful hints on classroom ettiquite, dress, etc., and is arranged to show the typical ballet class order. I have worn my copy to a very dog-eared state from constant use both at home and in class. Wonderful for teachers and students alike.

Love Susan Branch, Hate This Book
While I have the complete Susan Branch collection and have loved her artwork and recipes for years, I must say that I was very disappointed in this particular book. The other books Heart of the Home, Vineyard Seasons, The Summer Book, and Christmas from the Heart of the Home, have a very homey, average-jane (that's me!), judeo-christian type tone to them. The recipes are great and there are wonderful "I-can-do-this" ideas for decorating, entertaining, celebrating, etc.

However, Girlfriends Forever, was a let down to me. I felt that this book was rife with New Age philosophies and Women First/feminist ideals, which as a Christian, just didn't sit right with me. I am disappointed that I paid money for this book and only keep it because my copy is personalized and autographed. (Susan Branch is a lovely woman, both inside and out, I was just disappointed with this work.)

As far as the recipes go, there isn't anything appealing in this book. That was a big surprise, too, since I use her other cookbooks on a daily basis. Maybe this one is just too healty for me-- and I live in Southern California!!

On the plus side, the artwork is wonderful, as usual and there are some good ideas regarding decorating and organizing. I particularly liked her meal planning ideas. But, the overall tone of the book was a disappointment to me.

A lovely, feel-good book
Susan Branch has done it again with her new book "Girlfriends Forever." The illustrations, as ususal, are colorful and charming. Best of all, this book contains photos of Susan and her friends, allowing us a glimpse into her life. Containing hints, recipes, stories about Susan's life - this book is pure pleasure that you'll dip into again and again.

A Must Read!
What a joy to read this book! There is something wonderful for every "girlfriend" in this book. It encompasses young and old. I connected with many things in this book (I'm 30) and I gave it to my mom for Mothers Day. She absolutely loved it! I had a chance to meet Susan Branch at a book signing for this book and I was priveledged to share with her my thoughts about this book and all of hers I own. She was such a joy to talk with if only for a brief moment. My copy has a special message to me and will always be treasured and definataly re-read over the years! Give this to all your "girlfriends"! They will love it!

A PROFOUND AND COMPULSIVELY READABLE BOOK!
As a reporter, I have written and read a lot of true crime stories over the years. While Sue Billig's search for Amy has filtered into the American consciousness through a variety of television pieces on Unsolved Mysteries and other news shows, no one has ever recorded the full, complex and mesmerizing story until now. No 5 minute news clip or 90 minute documentary could possibly convey the myriad bizarre complications that arise during the search for Amy, the effect on the family and the sheer amount of strange characters Sue confronts. If you thought you knew anything about this case, think again . No one else seems to have gotten it right. This is truely a modern epic on a grand scale, and Sue Billig is a modern day hero.
On a sheer storytelling level, the writing is straight forward and profoundly compelling, with great insight into the human heart. This true story has more twists and turns than most bestselling novels, the pacing is just right, and the characters are so well drawn you would think they're in the room with you. If this book had been published as a hardcover first, I have no doubt it would have received the attention it deserves, placing it in the top echelon of True Crime.

I could not put this book down
You couldn't help feel for Sue Billig as she searches the country for her daughter Amy. Every clue she found made you want to read on. The characters she encounters along her search are just unreal. You wonder how people can behave the way they do in this real life story. It is well written. You feel like you are part of the search for Amy. You can not help but feel for this women and her family.

I WAS AMAZED!
I always hate when a reviewer reveals things that you wouldn't want to know, so suffice it to say that this is one of the most amazing true stories I've ever read. I got to know very nasty bikers, stalkers and a bunch of creeps I would never want to meet in real life, but I'm also very glad I met Sue and Amy and the Billigs.

The book jacket doesn't mention one of the most important parts of the case, which is the 23-years of stalking that Susan endured while searching for her daughter. Yeah, they catch the guy, finally, but you won't believe who it is, and I'm not going to tell you! The trial is fantastically portrayed, and the prosecutors and their strategy are very well drawn. I love legal thrillers, and this beat most of the ones I've read before.
All in all, Without A Trace is a book that kept me reading from page 1 to the end, hardly able to put it down. It's also a cautionary tale that every parent and teenager should read.

I had seen this story in a documentary on A&E and on 20/20, and thought I knew a lot about it, but the book tells you so much more, and then you find out that a lot you saw in the documentary isn't even quite right. There is also a lot of important information that the authors found after the documentary had already come out.

My last word on this is you gotta read it to believe it!

A Little Scary!
This isn't like the Disney movie! I loved this book but at the same time I was shocked by the violence of the fighting between Hook and the Lost Boys and the Indians. I don't think I'll be reading this one to my nephews and neices, not until I have edited out the violent bits. It wasn't that In-Your-Face violence of the Hollywood movies, it was more insinuated and there was definetly a menacing atmosphere surrounding Wendy's, Peter's and Michael's adventures in Never Never Land. I do recommend it though, just not for easily frightened youngsters. This is definetly in need of a PG rating on the cover. PARENTS: This is no Disney Peter Pan!

Best Audio Book in my ten year search
Driving with young children in the car quickly convinced me that it was unsafe to not give them something to listen to. After ten years I have collected a large (30+) bag of books-on-tape. I have also loaned them to others and asked for opinions. Peter Pan (read by Wendy Craig) is not only my favorite, but also the favorite of my wife and most of my friends. It is excellent for all ages (4 to 80) and even most hardened teenagers. Humour, presentation, ... a prefect 10.

Bittersweet
The book 'Peter Pan' by J. M. Barrie is a truly beautiful work. It is never too cloyingly sweet or too harsh, and the child's perspective of the world is beautifully crafted. It does, however, bring you along on a journey to the Neverlands, and perhaps for a little while we can be reunited with our dreams.

Although Wendy seems a little prim, she is sweet and motherly. John was offhand and brave, Michael was tiny and believing. My favourite character was, however, Peter. The author really outdid himself on this one. Peter's innocent cockiness and love for dangerous adventures endeared him to me at once. He still has all his first teeth, and his first laugh - what more could we ask of him? His frightful happiness in danger reminds me of my seven-year-old self.

The book retains a magical quality right up to the last page. The midnight scene where Peter coaxes them out of the window has always stood out in my mind; there is a kind of magic in an ever-young boy, small and innocently cocky and always up to some mischief. The ending of the book is very sad, for only those who are gay and young and light-hearted can fly.

Definitely a book worth reading. Adults, trust me on this one: you might think you're too old to read this book, but once you do you'll find that a piece of Neverland still resides in your heart.

A good companion piece to the movie
This book was just as I expected it to be a behind the scenes look at a very intense movie. The photos are spectacular and the narrative very informative. My only complain is there is not enough of either. It left me wanting more. Maybe that is what a good book is supposed to do but I still had unanswered question concerning how the movie was made. I love those production stories full of little details of how they did it, what went wrong and how they made it all work somehow. Was it worth the price, yes but I would have paid more to get more.

A book to compliment a video masterpiece.
Saving Private Ryan is purely unique. The movie itself was breathtaking, making you wake up and realize that these people, mere teenagers, were risking all they ever knew to rid the world of the Nazi terror. It blew me away to think that this really happened in our world, that we could kill our brothers without knowing why. This book is truely a great companion to the film. It gives you the little things you may have missed while watching the movie, and helps you understand the movie better. I reccommend this book to the Saving Private Ryan enthusiast, and to anyone who wants to know more about this period in history. I congratulate the makers of the film and the writers of the book for helping the world to remember the events and tragedies of the Second World War. I pray that through great accomplishments like these masterpieces, we shall not forget how lucky we really are and how important it is for this not to happen again, for the good of all mankind.

ONE DIRECTOR, ONE BOOK!! THIS BOOK!!
You want to read a book about war, about a movie and a mission, the mission of Steven Spielberg, you have to read this book cause of its great story, its great photographs and its creator Steven Spielberg and its great players Tom Hanks and the others!!!! It's worth the money!!! (And don't forget to watch the movie!!!)
