Legacy, the quintessential novel about Elizabeth
It's been over seven years since I first read Legacy, and I am still struck by the artistry of it. I have been fascinated by Elizabeth since childhood, after all she was a powerful woman in a time when women were considered the property of their fathers and afterwards of their husbands. This book is still one of the perfect books to curl up next to a fire with hot cider and immerse yourself in. Kay is frankly one of the best authors I have been lucky enough to discover, rivalling any bestselling author. Her other novel, Phantom, also sucks you into the color and passion of the story, making both novels unforgettable.

The definitive novel on the life and character of Elizabeth
After reading Susan Kay's Phantom, which is the most beautiful and moving novel about my favorite character in all of literature, I decided that I loved her eloquent and interesting writing style and the emotion and insight she put into the novel. Therefore, I knew had to find her other novel, Legacy. After many patience weeks of searching and annoying librarians, I had it and in this book I discovered the most human characterization of one of the world's most compelling and intriquing historical figures. Susan Kay captured the life and spirit in Elizabeth Tudor and expressed it as beautifully as she did that of Erik. The lives of Elizabeth, Robin, Cecil, and all the others become real again. Her book inspired me to learn more about these people and this time period, and I have yet to find a more real, compelling, and moving novel about Elizabeth.

The Best Book on Elizabeth Tudor!

This book is one of those that I never fail to mention when asked "If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have 5 books..." I had read several books about Elizabeth and the Tudors before reading "Legacy", and I've read many since, but I doubt it will ever be topped.

The portrayal of Elizabeth provided by Susan Kay is one of a living, breathing woman with desires, fears and intelligence. After reading this book, you will feel as though you have personally known Elizabeth I and the menagerie of historical figures that shaped the period of time that we now call "Elizabethan".

A well-written, common-sense approach to fitness.
What makes this book good is what it isn't: It's not a fitness guru pontificating on how to get and keep a world-class fabulous body. Suesan Lazarus Pawlitski doesn't advocate obsessive exercise--she recommends a bunch of good ways to become fit without killing yourself. She's got a common sense approach that will work with most people's every day life. You don't have to become a gym rat to build a better body for yourself--one that looks good and copes better with lifting the groceries or pushing a lawnmower.

As a man, I'm not Suesan's target audience, but I found her general advice on fitness and the weight-training exercises to be very good. don't be compulsive about it

Well written, concise, motivating, great illustrations.
I read the book in one sitting and plan to order the audio tape. This book is motivating, easy to read and the illustrations are clear and helpful. Suesan Pawlitski obviously enjoys teaching and fitness. Her approach is common sense for the average person, although I think a fitness fanatic would benefit from these movements, too. I only wish I lived in Santa Barbara to take advantage of the "live classes". Here's to a strong and graceful body. Thanks Suesan.

Accurate advice for those who want a simple way to tone up!
As a fitness professional of 15 years and author, I am so pleased to see a well-written book that offers simple and sound information about how to strengthen and tone your body. "Be Your Best Body" offers an easy (but challenging) workout that works well not only at home, but it can be used during travel. I like how Pawlitski dispels common fitness myths, focuses on correct body mechanics and provides easy-to-understand information. What I liked best about this book, besides the fact that you can read it in one sitting, is it's timeless. The workout will get you in shape today and will still work 20 years from now. It's basic and it's good!

Insightful!
A very refreshing glance at what women face daily...and sometimes don't even realize. A well written and informative book about Corporate America for women. This was the best business book I've read in some time and I recommend it for any young lady or established career woman--the sooner the better!

It's up to us.
Susan Solovic's "The Girls' Guide to Power and Success" puts it right back in our laps. We have to make the changes in our expectations and behavior. She provides the motivation and the tools.

Little has changed in the last 50 years except that there are more women in titled positions. With these titles came no change in the lack of independence from male persuasion in decision making. We're still doing it their way.

Time for women to step up to the plate, read Solovic's book and march to our own drummers.

Very Useful And Provocative Book
Susan Wilson Solovic has written a very useful and often provocative book for working women of all ages. Unlike some "career guides" that focus only on statistics and theory, Ms. Solovic interviewed successful women who have been "in the trenches" of the business world in addition to using great examples from her own varied and successful career. This approach not only makes the book a "good read" but it provides "nuts and bolts" practical advice on how women can be more effective in the business world today. This book was written from a unique point of view by a woman "who's done it all" and who now wants to make the road a bit smoother for other women in business.

I was overwhelmed
I was overwhelmed,

This book is more of a resource book than a clear guide on how to quickly write a great resume. I found the volume of information overwhelming and it only served to frustrate me in that I did not know where to begin.

Trying to read the book from start to finish was a daunting task as it doesn't follow a logical series of steps to produce a great resume; it makes a great reference book but not a hand-holding guide.

I returned the book and purchased Robin Ryan's "Winning Resumes" (0471263656). This is an excellent, short book/instruction manual. Actually, I purchased both of her books; her cover letter book is "Winning Cover Letters" (047126348)

I purchased Ryan's books after I had sent 20 resume and cover letters and received nothing back except one rejection letter. After reading the books and following her step by step instructions I produced a much better set of material.

I have sent ten Cover letters and resumes since adopting her ideas and I've had three responses in just two weeks!!! I've had an interview with two of the companies and the third is still taking apps and will "get back with me".

Good luck in your search...

Money Well Spent
This 596-page book is an excellent buy for the jobseeker and serious-minded resume writer. I own several resume-writing "how-to" books. RESUME MAGIC, by far, is my favorite...the one I reach for most often...my bible.

Susan Britton Whitcomb teaches the reader how to catalog their background, write great copy, choose a flattering format, and design a visually artistic resume. She leaves no how-to stone unturned: JIST cards, reference lists, action verbs, sample phrases, electronic resumes, cover letters, you name it!

[It's] a small price to pay considering the hundreds of samples, suggestions, and strategies Susan offers. Money well-spent indeed!

600 pages for a book on writing a resume, impossible?
I said, "How can resume-writing be this complicated?" before carrying this 600-page 8.5" x 11" book home. Susan Whitcomb did a good job of compiling tips and advice and presenting them at the right time. There are tips on left vs. right justification, including personal information, and picking fonts, and long discussions on CVs vs. resumes, on functional vs. chronological, on printed vs. scannable vs. ASCII, and on grammar and mechanics. She's obviously a great copyriter and page designer.

Because, indeed, a resume now must look good enough so it will be read.

One chapter did nothing but help you choose which sections and section titles fit your situation. I found that weird, until I began the next chapter, which read, "Even experienced writers can feel some fear and trepidation when facing the start of a new project. You already have a good outline in which to work (chapter 4), which puts you beyond the 'blank sheet of paper' stage."

Inside the "tweaking" section, she even gives the keystrokes you'll use for both Microsoft Word and Corel WordPerfect.

You'll also find 250 "impact-mining questions" to ask yourself to come up with powerful accomplishment statements. Is that a lot? Well, no, but it gives you a good start! When you expect a resume-writing book to have a list of action verbs, Susan diligently wrote a impressive example for each verb.

I do not agree with her treatment of ASCII resumes, though. Of course, her discussion on online promotion and online resume submittal has grown stale; her ideas on "keyword resumes" is as outdated as advice on META TAGS on web pages.

Bulky... comprehensive... a great workbook.

It's an enchanting book about Kara's struggles for dragons.
Flight of the Dragon Kyn is another masterpiece by Susan Fletcher. It is a prequel (opposite of a sequel) to Dragon's Milk. Kara is summoned to the King when he hears of her ability to call birds. She then learns the King wants her to call dragons. She calls the dragon that brought her back to life when she was very young. The dragon, Flagra, is slayed, much to Kara's horror. The story then un-folds in a rich account of Kara's time spent with the dragon kyn, and her struggles to help save them from man. This story will have you captivated from the beginning to the very end, and is a must-read for anyone looking for a good book.

Great to read again and again!
All three books in the Dragon Chronicles series are wonderful, but this one is definitely my favorite.
Written in first person through Kara, Susan Fletcher bring everything around her to life. Through all of your senses, you constantly have a vivid mental image of Kara's ordeals and emotions.
Throughout all of Kara's decisions, like whether she should leave home to help the king, or continue to call down dragons, the author always has us thinking "What would I decide if I was in her shoes?"
Another plus in almost all books of Susan Fletcher, there is a small, underlying love story. All of Kara's friendships she made along the way, show that even through adversity and hardship, companionship always makes things better.

Not only do I strongly recommend this book, but I can be sure in saying that if you like this book, you will want to read it over and over again!

A hard-to-get, exciting prequal to, "Dragon's Milk".
This imaginative book, tells of Kara, a young girl who was taken ill with vermilion fever. She is left for dead in a cave, where she is nursed to health by a dragon. Now with the power to speak to dragons, and call their kyn (birds), she is summoned by a king. This story gives the history of the green-eyed line, before Kaeldra (the main character in "Dragon's Milk). It can be read alone, as it's own story. My suggestion is to read "Dragon's Milk" first. It adds the flavor, Suan Fletcher was aiming for

From Publishers Weekly, May 12, 1997
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY May 12, 1997 THE SHORTEST DISTANCE BETWEEN YOU AND A PUBLISHED BOOK: Everything You Need to Know in the Order You Need to Know It by Susan Page The neophyte, certainly, and possibly even the already published will find that Page, as her subtitle claims, really does tell you what you need to know to get happily published. This self-help author (How One of You Can Bring the Two of You Together) knows what she's talking about, whether she's advising on how to write a book proposal, find an agent or promote one's book. To accomplish the latter successfully, Page suggests working at it full time for three months, then part time for a year - that's for the hardcover edition; the process starts again with the paperback reprint. Altogether she has devised 20 steps to walk you through a procedure that's likely to discourage the fainthearted. Page can't seem to resist a bit of lobbying as she makes a lengthy pitch in support of independent bookstores, and she's on target with her suggestions that attending regional bookseller conventions is beneficial. This is one of the more instructive guides to read before writing your book. (June

A Must for First-Time Authors
Susan Page offers extremely helpful advice to the first-time writer, from what to expect in a contract to what you need to do in terms of publicity. When I was writing my first book, The $100,000 Teacher: A Teacher's Solution to America's Declining Public School System, I kept on referring to it from time to time as I progressed through the publishing process. Unlike so many other tomes sitting on shelves in bookstores on writing, Page's book is actually useful.

The Shortest Distance Between You and a Published Book
This book is absolutely invaluable! Susan Page takes you step by step thru the maze of writing, setting goals, deciding on titles, finding an agent, query letters, book proposals, contracts, what to expect after you sell, plus great infomation about promotion, marketing and working with the media. Sound advice resonates from each page. The resource section alone was worth the price of the book. Written in a easy to read style that lets you breeze through the material. It was a true gift to those of us in the throes of publishing and trying to find our way through. Her book is an treasure trove of information & the perfect primer for the first time writer or sauvy professional. Thank you Susan for your skill and you openness in sharing the secrets to success that you have learned along the way. Now there is no reason that success is beyond anyone's reach with this as our bible.

Doeas The Wheel of Fortune mirror a historical family?
Susan Howatch has used real historical families as the basis for Penmarric (Henry II), Cashelmara (Edward I) and The Rich Are Different and The Sins of the Fathers (Caesar and Cleopatra). Does The Wheel of Fortune reflect a historical family? If so, which one? You can e-mail me at gdavid@mcclainfinlon.com

Continuation of Cashelmara with another family ...
I love English history and I love historical novels, so I adore Susan Howatch's books, and The Wheel of Fortune is my favorite. The only thing to add to the overwhelmingly positive reviews written before me is to answer the question in the first review: the book is a continuation of the story told in Cashelmara, recast with a different family. Cashelmara is based on the story of Edward I, Edward II, and Edward III, ending as Edward III overthrows his mother's lover and claims the throne as his own. The Wheel of Fortune picks up the same story about half way through Edward III's life (he is now Bobby Godwin), and follows the story through the life of his sons Edward The Black Prince (Robert), John (John of Gaunt) and Thomas (Thomas of Woodstock), his grandsons Kester (Richard II) and Harry (Henry IV), and his great grandson Henry V (Hal).

let the music begin! The Blue Danube!
If I had to name a favourite author, it would have to be Susan Howatch; her novels never fail to delight me and nourish my need for stories that do more than entertain. And if I had to choose a favourite Susan Howatch novel, it would have to be the Wheel of Fortune. This sumptuous novel drew me in from the very first page and soon I was lost in richness, following the drama of the Godwin family and living their lives with them in their fabulous Welsh estate, Oxmoon.
As in all of the Howatch family sagas which precede it, The Wheel of Fortune is written through a multiple third-person perspective, a structure which Howatch has mastered to perfection. Thus she leads us through the story by allowing us to identify first with one character and then with another, each time forcing us to rectify the opinions we have already formed on each indivual in turn. It's as if we move around each character, seeing him or her from a multitude of aspects, from the inside and the outside, and thus gain insight into the whole personality.

While reading Howatch I often felt that this is perhaps her way of showing her readers the necessity for compassion and understanding in our lives, for she whips away our prejudices and preconceptions about her characters simply by switching perspectives. For me this happened in the Wheel of Fortune with the character of Kester, who first appears as a thoroughly unlikeable, spoiled child, a misfit who never failed to exasperate those around him - and of course the reader. The moment Kester himself was allowed to speak, however, and I saw the situation through his viewpoint, he became my favourite character and I could identify with him completely, and appreciate him as the creative genius he is.

Then there is Robert Godwin, the personification of male chauvinism, an uptight London barrister who takes leave of all his senses when he falls for his cousin Ginevra. Ginevra herself is at first rather silly and self-absorbed, but as she grows in depth and self-esteem she develops into a warm, strong, well-rounded personality and a driving force in the novel. John Godwin is the epitome of good upbringing: his motto is "Here I have my standards, and here I draw the line!"; but then he meets Bronwen, a lower class Welshwoman who embodies the passion and mysticism that is simmering just beneath the surface of John's own consciousness, and John throws caution to the wind. Finally there is Harry, Kester's nemesis and greatest rival, the perfect public school boy . It's the rivalry between Kester and Harry, both of whom seem to mirror each other, each one having what the other most desires, rising and sinking on opposite sides of the Wheel of Fortune, which provides the foundation for this wonderful story.

Last but not least there is Oxmoon itself, their home; fabulous, haunting, living, Oxmoon: the orchestra playing the Blue Danube in its grand hall while the dancers dance beneath the glittering chandeliers. The magical atmosphere which pervades this wonderful story and draws us into the wonderful world teeming with rounded, living, breathing, characters we feel we have known all our lives.

YOUR BOOK IS WONDERFUL!
The book you wrote is wonderful! I was very impressed by the depth of your knowledge and willingness to share your own experience while I laughed my head off at some of your comments and suggestions. I am rereading your book for the fifth time since my surgery is very soon. I'm also looking forward to using the fantastic array of products in your Survival Kit for my post-op care. If anyone is REALLY interested in finding out everything they need to know about having and recovering from cosmetic surgery . . . . this book is for you. Thank you Susan!

Tricia Isono, San Diego
Ever since my friends and I reached our mid-40's, a frequent topic of our conversations has been the possibility of having cosmetic surgery. Susan Gail's personal account of her experience from start to finish is amazing! I feel confident that I now have insightful information based on an experienced skin care specialist's research. When I decide to have this surgery, I will do it with much more knowledge than I had before I read this book. I think it is also marvelous to have the option of a Survive and Thrive Kit from someone who picked the best products available.

Read this book
I read the book called A Time Of Angels by Karen Hesse. This is a historical fiction book.
This book is about this girl named Hannah that gets separated from her parents and has to move to her Aunts house in West Boston. After she got there she started working in a store to help her Aunt with food & clothes.
Weeks later she got the flu and got real sick. The flu had killed ten thousand people so far. After she gets her energy back. Tanta Rose and her went to try to get her family together. After month of hard work she got her family together.
I didn't like this book because it was boring. It barley had any action. If you are boring and like boring things you should you should read this book.

A view from a future teacher
I truly enjoyed this book by Karen Hesse. As a future teacher I will add this to my list of historical fiction in teaching social studies and language arts. I had no idea so many people died of the flu in 1918 - nearl two and one half times the number that died during WWI! Karen Hesse does an excellent job of placing ourselves into the life of a young Jewish girl named Hannah. She and her two sisters must live with her two aunts in a crowded Boston apartment because their father is fighting in the war, and their mother is trapped in Russia. She must eventually leave Boston alone because the flu is ravishing the city and her loved ones. She gets lost and is also stricken with the deadly flu. She is nursed back to health by a German farmer and a beautiful friendship develops. She eventually returns to Boston with the help of an angel to find the fate of her family. This is a must read book!

GrEat bOok
I got this book at a school event where we could choose one book (for free) to take home. I chose this one because I thought it sounded interesting, and although that was over a year ago I still read it. The author has a beautiful way of writing the story so that you can imagine what you would feel like in Hannah's shoes.
