Highland warrior : Alasdair MacColla and the civil wars
Published in Unknown Binding by Saltire Society ()
Author: David Stevenson

Alasdair Mac Colla
Stevenson looks at the history of the Gaelic fringe of Ireland and Scotland in the seventeenth century with a refreshingly unromantic eye. Gone are the quaint stories of Highland laddies, and villanous Cromwellians. Stevenson's "Highland Warrior" is thick with intrigue. Alasdair Mac Colla emerges from these pages looking super-human, but certainly not heroic in the conventional sense. However, in the fallen world of the seventeenth century, Mac Colla and his sidekick Manus Ruadh O'Cahan may be the closest one might ever get to heroic figures. They are, at least, extremely interesting individuals. This is a magnificent book, and it is a must read for any student of Irish or Scottish history.

very good book- 5 stars is not enough!
My uncle was with the 3rd Bn 4th Marines at Corregidore (they formed at Cavitte after the First and Second Battalions came from Shanghai). He was at Cabanatuan and Bilibad and he also worked at the "Farm" and other places. I bought this book for him as a gift; after reading it, he said that it is extremely accurate except he does not think that any Japanese Officer ever considered their welfare...he rode the hellships to Japan and ended up in a zinc mine at Funatsu(Japan).
I grew up knowing about "Soochow" and his antics...i have the book "Soochow and the 4th Marines"...a first edition given to me as a boy. (I also give that book 5+ stars). In my opinion, this is the very best book that Bruce Norton has written so far...and I have read all of his works.
J. E. Delezen, author of "Eye of the Tiger".

ONE OF THE VERY BEST!
I AM ALIVE! is a collection of short stories told by Marine Sergeant Major Charles R. Jackson, a West Point graduate who resigned his Army commission, in 1926, to become a Private in the United States Marine Corps. Fifteen years later, he was a sergeant major in the 4th Marine Regiment, fighting for his life on Corregidor, and later dealing with life as a POW in the bottom of a copper mine in northern Japan for nearly four years.
Much credit is due to Major "Doc" Norton,USMC, who edited this work and ow presents this story as a masterpiece of World War II experiences. I know the phrase, "I couldn't put it down," is well-worn, but that is exactly what happened to me. One story leads to another, each one better than the last. The finished product is a marvelous collection of observation of fellow Marines, soldiers, Japanese officers, and even Shoo Chow the mongrel mascot of the 4th Marine Regiment, who also survived being a "guest of the Emperor."
I have read many of Major Norton's books, but this is without question his best effort yet. There is no doubt in my mind that this is an award-winning book. I would encourage every veteran, every parent, and every service man and women, to read
this great book. They will immediately learn where their military heritage comes from. Without doubt, a 5-Star book. I'll buy 25 copies as Christmas presents.

A Soldier's Soldier
This is the story of a young Polish boy who escapes death at the hands of the Nazis, is rescued by the US Army and decides then and there that he will become an American soldier. And what a soldier he becomes. After finding his way to America with his family, Tadeusz Gaweda joins the Army, becomes a paratrooper and works his way up the ranks to the top enlisted grade as Command Sergeant Major of the elite XVIII Airborne Corps. It is a story of personal sacrifice, unrelenting high standards, perseverance, a determination to excel and a high order of devotion to duty and to his adopted country. By his side through it all is his lovely wife, Edith, who had endured the Nazi occupation of her Czechoslovakian homeland and who exhibited personal bravery as well in escaping from behind the Iron Curtain. In the end, Command Sergeant Major Gaweda's story is a love story-the love of a man for his wife and family, his comrades in arms and his love of America. I found his story to be both moving and inspiring. Those of us who are native-born Americans may take our good fortune somewhat lightly at times. Edith and Tadeusz Gaweda -Americans by choice-make us native born Americans grateful for what we have had from birth.

I'll Be Home Soon, Snoopy
Published in Turtleback by Demco Media (1996)

Brightly colored, and a lot of fun!
This cute little book (30 pages, excluding the title page and so forth) is another excellent example of the work of the incomparable Charles M. Schulz. In this book, when Charlie Brown and his family go away for a few days, he is forced to ask Lucy to take care of Snoopy. While Linus and Lucy try to make Snoopy feel at home, he is just not what they expect in a dog. Through all their adventures, the gang produces tons of fun for the reader!

When I was a child, I absolutely loved the Peanuts, and I am so pleased that my own children have now fallen in love with those same funny characters. This book is large and attractive, with brightly colored pictures that are sure to please the young reader (and Peanuts fans of all ages)! My children and I highly recommend this book to you!

A funny book about a zoo
This book is narrated by a charming adolescent about his father's experiences as a zoo director in the 1930's. It has a lot of the humor and fondness that adolescents often have about their parents.

There are, of course, animal stories and stories about dealing with the public and administrators and stories about how zoos, often strapped for money, trade for new animals.

There are stories about small town Kansas people who become explorers and the public's response to them.

Without giving away details, I can't communicate how funny this book is and what an interesting view it is of Wichita, Kansas in the 1930's. That was a diffcult and simpler time in towns. This book reveals a lot about the way other generations dealt or didn't deal with issues that remain today.

I read this book after taking it out from the library. After laughing until tears ran down my face and gasping, I decided to get the book for myself. It is the perfect read for those dismal nights when sleep won't come although unhappy thoughts do.

If you like family stories, zoo stories, animal stories, Kansas stories and stories from the 30's before the Second World War, try this one out.

I loved this book. It even makes me smile writing this review.
